How To Improve Your Concentration With Meditation

Different schools of yoga have various ways to start their basic lessons but all of them encourage their students to concentrate on a particular part of the body. In Raja Yoga which is a branch of the yoga system, the students training in this system are told to keep their concentration on the Trikute which is the seat of the mind. Here, it is believed that the seat of the mind lies in the space between the two eyes or is said to be in the space at the top of the head. Other schools of yoga recommend that one can concentrate on other parts of the body like the tip of the nose, on the navel chakra or even the base or Muladhara chakra which lies at the base of the spinal cord.

Now, how do you go about beginning your practice on concentration? Well you could start by getting your self seated comfortably on the floor with your legs crossed. Though this is a highly recommended position it is not necessary that you should take up this position. Just make sure that you sit in apposition which makes you feel comfortable and then you look straight at an object which is kept inline with your eyes. Look hard for a couple of minutes and then gently close your eyes. Next visualize the object and you will see the object clearly in the space between your eyebrows. The image of the object slowly fades away after a short time. The moment you feel it fading away open your eyes and look at the object again. In the beginning you will find that it is quite difficult for you to retain the image of the object in your mind's eye for long but with continuous practice you will succeed. You will find that you have lots of distractions like other pictures coming in between or you hear sounds which tend to distract your concentration. You will soon realize that instead of the image of the object you have other thoughts bothering you. But all these unwanted memories and thoughts will soon go away if you can keep your mind focused on the image of the object constantly. Make sure that every time you get distracted you bring back your mind to the picture of the object. Soon you will find that these unwanted thoughts do not bother you at all.

For the Hindus, meditation is a means to achieve the super conscious state called Samadhi. This is the highest state which every Hindu who practices yoga strives to achieve. In this state the self or the thought of conscious does not exist and gets merged with the Absolute or Brahman. It is only with the guidance of the Guru that one can attempt to reach this highest state as the repercussions are many if the practice goes wrong leading one to become even mentally unstable or start hallucinating. The Westerners however have a different goal to achieve when it comes to meditation. They want to practice meditation for harnessing their dispersed thoughts so that a sense of discipline can be achieved. They want greater focus or concentration so that they can deal with their everyday problems with clarity of thoughts.

With intense practice, concentration now becomes effortless where you will find that you can easily visualize and retain the image of the object for a longer period of time without distractions. This is meditation.

Is Hatha Yoga Right For You?

With so many styles and types of yoga out there you ready do need to do some of your research first, even before you start test driving classes. Some of the definitions of styles and types are confusing in themselves. This is a simplified definition of Hatha yoga. Keep in mind that the teachers personal style and level of training plays a part in their classes also.

Hatha (pronounced ha ta) Yoga is "yoga for health". The word Hatha comes from combining the two Sanskrit (the original language of yoga) terms "ha" meaning sun and "tha" meaning moon. Yoga means to joining two things together, therefore hatha yoga is meant to join together sun (ha, masculine, active) energy with the moon (tha, feminine, receptive) energy, creating balance and power. Some poses are more masculine and some are more feminine, and the instructor combines these poses as needed by the participants.

Hatha yoga is generally practiced in the western world consisting of mostly poses, emphasizing the physical aspect of yoga. But generally a class does incorporates some other basic elements such as breathing exercises, chakra center(energy) work, hand positions (mudra's) and meditation even if you don't know it. This is applicable for the general population or specialty groups such as kids, fertility, seniors, prenatal or post natal, depression & plus sized clients.

Using linked poses that warm up the body, build strength, flexibility and then cool the body down, we get a complete mind and body workout. Yoga uses your own body weight for resistance and is a non competitive activity. There are alternatives to customize each pose for every age, ability and comfort level. Props can be used if the facility has them available but they aren't necessary. Make sure to let the teacher know of any existing injuries or problems so she or he can aid you accordingly.

There are almost endless pose options and combination of poses. There are some poses and some series of poses (such as the Sun salutation) that will be repeated every class but there are enough poses that new ones can be introduced all the time.

Each teacher does have a style of their own, so be sure to try out a number of teachers within each style that you are trying.

Benefits are endless but some examples are: renews, invigorates, heals, stretches, strengthens, enhances lung capacity, promoted balance, alignment, circulation, stress management, ability to reduce problems such as back aches & constipation, raises energy levels, tones muscles, boosts metabolism, aids digestion, increases body awareness and much, much more.

How Yoga Benefits Children With Special Needs

Yoga and kids go together. Kids want to move, explore their world, and interact physically and mentally in order to understand themselves and their environment. Yoga provides a perfect opportunity to do so.

As yoga has gained in popularity and medical acclaim, it has been implemented with positive results by special needs individuals and groups. Yoga has proven effective for children with:

- ADHD

- Autism

- Cerebral Palsy

- Down Syndrome, and others needs.

While yoga is not a "magic" cure, it will encourage physical activity, increase self esteem, provide relief from symptoms, promote positive social interactions, teach stress management, and develop muscle tone and flexibility, along with providing numerous other benefits.

Asanas

Yoga poses, or asanas, are especially beneficial for improving weaknesses while building off of strengths. Using photos of animals or small stuffed animals which coordinate with the pose name helps children focus and engage multiple learning skills. Poses can also be easily adapted to accommodate physical limitations and specific requirements.

Breathing

Teaching children yoga breathing provides one of yoga's greatest benefits. Yoga breathing increases lung function and capacity. As well, it provides a calming tool which is accessible anytime, anywhere, empowering children to meet their emotional and physical needs independently.

Relaxation

The relaxation skills which yoga teaches show children how to relax and focus. Using visualizations and affirmations helps children access internal strengths. Progressive muscle relaxation trains the mind increasing body connections and awareness. In addition, relaxation releases oxytocin, the feel good hormone, and instils a sense of peace and acceptance.

Finding a children's yoga instructor who is knowledgeable about special needs can be challenging. The best place to look may be your local Yoga Association as they have lists of certified instructors in your geographic region. Alternatively, you can approach a reputable yoga studio to inquire about classes for kids or special needs. The yoga community is one built on sharing, so even if they cannot meet your needs or answer your questions, they may know someone else who can.

As you incorporate yoga into the life of your child with special needs you will notice tremendous benefits. These may manifest physically, emotionally, or mentally. Often after just one session children will become more aware of their body and emotions. With regular practice these positive connections will be enhanced leading to improved health, better coping skills, and increased optimism.

Yoga should be used in conjunction with the advice of a certified medical practitioner. Please continue to take all prescribed medications and follow other recommended health and wellness routines.

At Alternative Medicine Schools, Get Trained in Natural Healing Arts

In today's day and age there is a wide variety of medical treatments that have been made available to us. Some are less traditional than others, but can be equally effective. There are alternative medicines and treatments that differ from traditional Western medicine in that they only use natural methods that result in healing. There are a number of alternative medicine schools that exist apart from other medical schools to properly train individuals who wish to enter that field. Upon completion of the courses and programs offered, and with a degree in hand, graduates can then enter a number of fields that offer various methods of holistic healing, which is becoming more and more popular.

Like any other school, the type of courses that an individual might take depends entirely on their career interest. It goes without saying that someone who has the desire to enter the field of massage therapy will have to focus their studies on courses that involve massage therapy. When students attend alternative medicine schools, their studies will involve a variety of holistic methods including naturopathy, acupressure, acupuncture, massage therapy, homeopathy, chiropractic methods, and hydrotherapy.

The content of these courses will without question, leave students fully trained and prepared to enter their desired field with complete confidence. A student looking to enter into homeopathy will be fully equipped with the necessary skills to become a homeopathic or perhaps an herbal medicine practitioner. Perhaps a student wants to attend a school that specializes in naturopathy. The list of studies that those types of alternative medicine schools offer will involve more than just naturopathy, but will also include courses in botanical and herbal medicine, aromatherapy, and many other Chinese medicines.

Most of the schools that provide training in the healing arts offer a wide range of training in different Chinese medicines and methods. This is because so many alternative medicine methods involve an extensive knowledge and practice of Chinese medicines and practices. Anything from acupuncture and yoga to massage therapy and herbal medical practices has an application of this training. These types of treatments and methods are growing in popularity with each generation, making them excellent career choices. With the growing need for experts in these fields, alternative medicine schools are becoming increasingly necessary and beneficial.

The Future of Yoga Teacher Training Programs

Despite a lagging economy, the demand for holistic health and tools like yoga to counter stress, continue to grow. Over 15 million of Americans now practice yoga, according to the Yoga Journal's Yoga in America story. The practice has expanded from small spiritual-based communities to fitness centers and medical centers nationwide.

While the demand for holistic services will continue to increase, there is a strong need for fully trained professionals. There is a range of yoga teacher preparation among instructors: some have no training, others attend two-day seminars while others complete formal programs of 200 hours or more in techniques and lifestyle.

While there is no national certification standard or certifying bodies that administers national exams for teachers, the Yoga Alliance registers both individual teachers and teacher training programs (schools) who have complied with minimum educational standards established by the organization.

As yoga continues the move to mainstream America, some are beginning to scrutinize the standards of schools and teachers. Some states are moving towards licensing schools and teachers individually in an effort to protect consumers. The Yoga Alliance model of 200 and 500 hour training programs may be a structure that the states replicate for licensing requirements for individuals and schools.

While many take teacher training programs to enhance their own personal yoga practice, others choose to use it as a part-time and sometimes full-time career. Job opportunities fall into the three main categories--fitness, therapy and spirituality. These categories create teaching opportunities in gyms, community centers, churches, employer sites and more.

A full-time career in yoga is doable but requires a clear strategy and mix of opportunities including group classes, individual training, corporate wellness and workshops and continuing education services.

If you decide on a career in teaching it's also good to have a niche and clear competitive advantage. Niches could include sports, special populations like pre-natal or cancer, Thai massage therapy and more.

Yoga and Pranayama For Applied Energy

Yoga contains many methods for the cultivation of energy or life force, which Yogis call, "Prana." People think of Pranayama as a Yogic breathing technique, only. Pranayama is much more than breathing. Pranayama is the cultivation of life force for your own health and those around you.

For those who have not yet found their true purpose in life, Yoga will reveal the hidden potential, which exists within each of us. Yoga is truly the oldest existing form of personal development known to mankind. It is up to us to pick up the pieces and build a better life.

Yet, Yoga does contain many answers, which will give us enough direction to transcend average thought. To go beyond our perceived limitations, requires us to study, look at the infinite possibilities, cultivate the positive energy from within, and project it out into the world by helping those who need it.

Remember the saying, "You can bring a horse to water, but you cannot make him drink?" Only those willing to help themselves are worthy of the massive amounts of energy you will spend helping them. Do not waste your time trying to help those who do not want it.

This is not meant to encourage selfishness, but your energy is much better spent on those who want to make a change for the best and those who willingly listen to you. If you want to develop the skills for hard selling, by all means "try to teach a pig to whistle - It will waste your time and annoy the pig."

At a certain point in life, all of us realize that energy should be conserved and applied toward the best possible potential. So, "don't waste your breath."
