How Can Yoga Improve Your Life?

Yoga represents an ancient philosophy and practice having its origins in India. Yoga implies both physical and mental discipline, being a way of improving our life, by continuously training our mind and our body. Yoga represents a way of relaxation and meditation, by using a set of techniques and practices which are extremely beneficial for the mind, the body and the spirit.

Yoga represents a way of discovering ourselves, of defining ourselves, of disciplining our body and mind and of finding equilibrium. Often we live chaotically, doing things without sense, making decisions without thinking, saying things without meaning. We stress ourselves, we hate, we love, we get angry, depressed, we get sick. Yoga practices are offering us solutions to all these problems, by educating our mind, body and spirit in order to reach equilibrium. Yoga practitioners use meditation in order to achieve self-awareness. Improvement must begin with us, with our own change, and the improvement of our own lifestyle, thinking or feeling. In this way we become aware of our true self and our true value.

First of all, yoga exercises improve our physical condition, by training our muscles and joints giving flexibility to our body. Secondly, yoga practices are extremely efficient in stopping the aging process and be healthy by imposing a rigorous discipline. Continuous practice of yoga revitalizes us and reduces the feeling of fatigue and stress, by controlling the energy of our body and helping to unblock it. It is a means of relaxation by eliminating stress.

Another important quality of yoga practice is that it disciplines the mind. It clears the mind, organizing our thought, helping us focus and concentrate on the things we have to do and that are really important in our lives. In addition, yoga helps us understand ourselves and the others, helps us to learn what empathy and compassion means. Yoga practices make us aware of what we are, of how we act or react, of our behavior, improving and changing it. We become more receptive and comprehensive, having a positive thinking and perception about the world, the people and, most of all, about us.

By practicing yoga we get away from the stressful things, we escape from the world that makes us anxious, after a hard day or week, after job or daily things that have to be done, after a year in which we worked hard. We escape from the daily problems and worries, relaxing our mind and body, preparing them for the things that are next to be done.

7 Reasons to Consider Private Yoga Instruction

Private yoga instruction can be a great way to get fit, lose weight, and feel great. If you are having trouble getting started with a yoga practice or making time for class, maybe personalized private yoga sessions are the answer to helping you get started. Sometimes just a few sessions are needed to help you establish a home yoga practice of your own that you can then supplement with Yoga DVDs or CDs. It might be the perfect alternative to traditional personal training sessions too.

Seven Reasons to Consider Private Yoga Instruction

1. Private yoga instruction can be done at a time and place that is convenient for you. You don't have to struggle with arranging your schedule and stressing yourself out to rush to class.

2. The intimidation, competition, and fear factors are eliminated. If the idea of going to a group class is intimidating, you prefer to exercise privately or with a small group of friends, or you hate working out in tight overcrowded spaces personalized private yoga offers a solution.

3. You are a beginner and not sure how to get started. With a private yoga session you begin at a level and in a way that feels just right for you so you can learn to do the yoga poses properly and keep yourself safe.

4. You have health limitations or are recovering from illness or injury. A private yoga session with an experienced teacher will enable you to modify positions to meet your requirements and perform only those yoga poses that can help you heal while keeping you safe.

5. You have specific health and fitness needs, goals and objectives to address. Personal yoga lessons can be tailored to meet your needs on any given day -- from gentle and restorative when you are stressed and frazzled to energizing and stimulating when you need a lift. Each day is different so each private yoga session can be customized to meet your changing needs. Whether your goal is to reduce stress, relieve back pain, lose weight, or improve your overall health and wellness, a personal yoga practice can be designed to meet your needs.

6. You don't want to go to a gym and hate working out with equipment. Yoga builds strength by using your own body weight as resistance, instead of gym equipment. You don't even need shoes -- yoga is done in your bare feet with little or no special equipment. It's one of the things I love best about it.

7. You are not a fan of the 'no pain no gain' 'just push a little harder' style used by many gyms and trainers. Yoga encourages you to listen to your body and honor your limits. Yogic philosophy is focused on developing compassion and non-striving and helps to reduce stress. It's a total workout for your mind, body, and spirit that leaves you feeling energized and calm not stressed, tired, or depleted.

There you have it. Seven reasons to give private yoga a try.

What Is Cross Training?

Cross training provides a complete workout for the body and this training technique is deployed by many professional athletes. This way the muscles and body never become use to one exercise or discipline, and more benefit is derived such as more calories being burned or greater levels of fitness. An example of this may be to have a training regime that consists of weight lifting, cycling, running and swimming. You could even combine a cardio workout (cycling, running, circuits, etc.) with a discipline that uses stretching and promotes flexibility as well as combining mind with body such as Yoga or Pilates.

The Science of Pranayama

Pranayama is an essential part of happinesslifetime.com Yoga teacher training, as well as regular classes for students. Pranayama is a science within the larger science of Yoga. Although Yoga and pranayama have existed for thousands of years, their existence in the Western consciousness is a few hundred years old, at best.

Additionally, Yoga and Pranayama are interconnected. There are also internal and external martial arts systems, which practice forms of pranayama. Yet, most martial arts can track their lineage back to Yoga. The science of pranayama has evolved over thousands of years.

Pranayama is the fourth limb of Patanjali's Yoga. Within the past few centuries, pranayama has become globally popular, due to its healing properties. The Hatha Yoga Pradipika is believed to have been written in the 15th century. The Gheranda-Samhita is said to have been written in the late 17th century. Both of the above-mentioned texts give details concerning a variety of pranayama techniques for healing.

Within the Hatha Yoga Pradipika, instructions are given for Surya Bhedan, Ujjayi, Sitkari, Sitali, Bhastrika, Bhramari, Murchha, and Plavini. Kapalabhati is covered just a little earlier, in the Hatha Yoga Pradipika, under the instructions for the Shatkarmas. Yet, the exact origin of pranayama is still unclear.

It is said that Brahman priests developed pranayama for oral transmission of the Vedas. The Vedas are a compilation of prayers and hymns. The Vedas took shape in written form, approximately 4,000 years ago. Long before the Vedas were put in writing, Brahman priests carried the message in their minds.

Considering the size of the Vedas, to recite them from memory, requires a sharp mind and amazing breath control. To this day, pranayama is still practiced during pooja, and while reciting the Vedas. Prayers and hymns are found in every religion. Therefore, anyone, of any religion, could practice pranayama, while saying their daily prayers for deeply spiritual inspiration.

Outside of India, pranayama is not often practiced during prayer. Pranayama's value for stress reduction, general health, and asana practice, are well known. Many different types of athletes practice pranayama to enhance their physical performance. Expectant mothers practice pranayama in natural child birth and prenatal classes.

Regulation of breath control has many different purposes. Any time is a good time to control one's breath. No matter how many times we practice breath awareness, one stressful situation can cause us to lose control of our breathing. When we have no control over our breathing, our blood pressure may also follow suit. When breath is out of control, the mind will also be out of balance.

The practice of pranayama is a time-tested method, which continues to progress as we record changes and results. Yoga teachers would do a great service, to future generations, by recording notes regarding results they have observed, due to the regular practice of pranayama techniques and other Yogic methods. For the sake of privacy, it is best not to record names, but notes create a written record of progress.

Yoga Girl Vs Surfer Boy

When I met my fiancé three years ago, I knew little about the true lifestyle of a surfer. The stereotypical, annoying caricature of a bleached blond repeating the mantra "hey dude!" at every turn, was burned into my brain, and the only image I could conjure when this man that I loved immediately, told me that he was indeed... a dedicated surfer. But he was thoughtful, and smart. He had ambition! Everything my preconceived notions had told me a surfer was not. So, I did not run for the hills. I stayed, and tried to develop my own appreciation for this possibly misunderstood activity.

And soon the inevitable happened. Like any fanatic or addict, my now fiancé (let's call him "K") wanted me to join him in his surf obsession. If only we could do this sport together! I could be his enlightened surfer girl... and we would have fun frolicking in the waves... talking for hours later about how "rad" that wave was, comparing board wax, and eventually making fun of the "kooks" until we could laugh no more... ah, the memories we could create! So, needless to say, like any good girlfriend would, I squeezed into my very first wetsuit and we loaded up the car and headed for the beach.

It wasn't that K was a bad teacher. It wasn't even necessarily that nobody had warned me about that slimy, warm feeling I would have to endure when I realized that if I had to pee, it would be close to my skin for a good couple of hours while I "learned to surf", making me "hold it" for longer than what was comfortable... Could it have been the FREEZING Nova Scotia climate? The combination of all these things certainly did not help. No. But I am certain it was truly my lack of familiarity with the ocean, and more specifically, the ocean's waves, that convinced me I would never surf again.

The specific wave that seemed to hold a special dislike for me, took me, flipped me more than once, filled my mouth with salty water and sent me into an underwater panic where I wasn't sure if I would find my next breath. Well, obviously I found it, as did I find my way back to the shore. And then to the car, where I sat, silently reflecting on my frightening experience. I longed for my yoga class. Safe, calm, every bit as enlightening as surfing, yet on land. Well, been there done that, was my satisfied sum of my surf experience. Can't he just come with me to Yoga? His answer was a self-conscious "no". He didn't like the idea of being the least flexible guy in the room. Well wasn't that the point? To become more flexible? But still, he continued to drag his feet. It would take time away from his surfing. So, stubborn as we both are, I would not surf and he would not yoga. As my future father-in-law would say -"Case closed. End of discussion. Period." Well, Namaste.

This is why, almost three years later, I find it so fascinating that K and I have booked our honeymoon trip as a Costa Rica surf/yoga discovery vacation. Yes, you read correctly, I have agreed to give it another shot. If - that is - K agrees to make yoga as much of a priority as surfing. There were several influences in making this decision. One being my ever-increasing love of Yoga; Ashtanga, Kindulini, Bikrahm, you name it, I love it. Studying at the Canadian studio, Moksha (a form of flow yoga in extreme heat) has been my personal favorite. My love of Yoga, like K's love of surfing was dividing our spare time from one another, something we both value. Another influence was my fiancé's chronic back issues. Reading extensively about surf-yoga has shown me just how crucial it is for surfers to balance their ocean routine with some strength training that combines stretching. Nothing does this better than Yoga, and since I'm getting married to Mr. K, I'd like him to be as healthy as possible for as long as possible. His incentive, besides getting me to try surfing again, is all the many reports on how costaricasurfguru.com/surf-yoga Surf Yoga enhances a surfer's ability in the water and, of course on the board. Balance, focus, and peace of mind, are all commonly noted as shared threads between surfing and Yoga. Another reason behind this Costa Rica surf and yoga trip was an article I recently read where a celebrity whom I both admire for her talent and physicality, stated in a magazine "Surfing is like Yoga on the water. You engage your body, mind and spirit." Call me a sucker, but the notion of "Yoga on the water" got me inspired to try again.

The main attraction for this surf/yoga quest, of course, was Costa Rica itself. Learning of the many surf camps, retreats and incredible yoga studios and teachers "had" me like a kid in a candy store. K and I will be checking out a number of locations like Tamarindo, Mal Pais, Dominical, and Jacó, but the one we're most excited about is our 7-day Montezuma Yoga Retreat. Right now, we're figuring out which program to try - Montezuma Yoga (with instructor Dagmar Sprember), Davaya (at Davaya Yoga) or La Escuela Del Sol. I feel confident that if we both persevere we will eventually solve this incredibly daunting life-altering dilemma, and pick one!

After all, isn't yoga about being a warrior? About being brave, and strong, both physically, and spiritually, in the face of uncertainty? Well, we'll see. All I know is that this adventure has us both opening our minds more than either of us would have thought all those moons ago. I will get to know my wave. K will get to know his Yoga mat. And if all else fails we will be surrounded by Costa Rica in all its glorious beauty. Could be worse right?

Namaste!

Yoga in Practice - Putting Revenge Aside

When you leave your Yoga class, you go out into the real world. Maybe someone says something rude, you get cut off on the highway, or you feel someone is taking advantage of your good nature. It is only human to feel a need for retribution, if an injustice has been done to you; but at what cost to you?

The cost of carrying a grudge causes you stress, anxiety, and wears on your health. A person who carries the need for revenge, over a long period of time, is also carrying a huge burden. Revenge is a "slow burning" form of anger and hatred, which becomes our personal baggage. The pain of carrying a grudge can ruin mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual health.

So, how can Yoga help you in this situation? Yoga has many ways to purge tension, stress, and anxiety, from the body and mind. One method might be to practice a small sequence of physically-challenging Asanas and focus on Ujjayi Pranayama.

As you inhale, draw forgiveness into your being. As you exhale, release your anger, tension, and frustration. You should practice this for a minimum of twenty minutes. A standing series, Sun Salutations (Surya Namaskar), or any sequence of postures, which you find challenging, is good enough.

Some people claim that forgiving another person is very difficult, but to hold a grudge, and wait for revenge, is even more difficult. It takes so much energy, and is such a strain on your health, to maintain angry thoughts, over a long period of time. It only makes sense to let go of resentment for your own health.

We are in control of the entire situation. Forgiveness is a virtue, and you can easily grant pardon for a fault. We forgive our pets, children, friends, and family members, for their imperfections. After all, none of us is perfect.

Forgiveness is as abundant as air, and eventually, it should come from the heart. Even though logic tells you to quit bearing a grudge, your heart might desire a little revenge. Usually, the heart is accurate, but in matters of anger and revenge, let logical thoughts dictate your actions.

Within Yogic philosophy, are many solid principles and virtues, which create happiness and well-being. Forgiving, acts of loving kindness, tolerance, and mercy, are universal principles, which improve the lives of everyone who practices them.

Taking positive action is much more powerful than talking about it. We do not need to wish for the ability to forgive, perform acts of loving kindness, become tolerant, or show mercy. All we have to do is practice these principles - daily.
