Ways to Get More Gain From Your Own Yoga Aerobic Walks

Start walking more quickly. You will get more rewards from doing that. You will also get more speed and also walk for longer periods.

Feel free to use hand weights throughout your yoga cardiovascular walking. Start off by making use of half pound weights. Using weights could help you to burn off calories while walking simultaneously. As soon as you get used to these, add to the weight size.

You can also use ankle weight loads. Ankle weights are designed for your legs. They help to give increased power to your leg muscles. They work to shape and tone your muscles together with burning calories. You will get a lot of benefits by using them while you are walking.

Incorporate a short run in the middle of your yoga aerobic walking. Begin running with about one hundred steps or so. When you jog, your heart rate increases and your breathing will be faster. After seven days, increase the steps by another one hundred. This could allow you to get out of the same strolling regimen every day. It is often good to add a twist in your yoga exercise so you won't really feel bored.

Eventually, you might want to have a change of scenery. Do something about it and walk different routes. If you can walk in your neighborhood, do that. If there is a close by park, go there. Walking trails are always great areas to do your own workout.

Do not always walk the same distance. There will be a number of days in which you could have shorter paths while on other days have longer walks.

You may also tune in to songs while you are walking. If not music, you may listen to audio books. They could put your mind at ease. However, if you choose to do this, be sure to be aware of your surroundings. You may not be in a position to hear or see exactly what is happening around you because you're preoccupied with listening to the music.

Yoga aerobic walking could be more fun if you've got somebody to go along with you. Get a friend, neighbor or relative to join you. Having somebody go along with you could give you that commitment and push that you have to go forward. Not everybody could get motivated to exercise by themselves.

During bad weather, get an indoor area just like a recreational center, retail complex or if you've a treadmill machine at home, you can use that.

The sooner you begin your yoga cardio walking, the sooner you can begin getting fit. Once you begin walking every single day, carry on. Do not stop walking for some time unless you've become ill where you can't do it at that time. When you become healthier, start back again and do not quit!

Raiders of the Lost Archetypes - The Gods of Yoga

Okay, the deities of yogic philosophy may not exactly be lost - they're actually making quite the comeback - but it is the way they're being rediscovered that is remarkable.

Yogis and yoginis worldwide are learning about these strange and wonderful beings in a new kind of story time. They appear in bronze statues called murtis, and are holding their many arms up in yoga studios and kitchen windows worldwide. Their ancient stories are being revived, revamped, and shared in a most curious and empowering way.

The strange thing about all the gods and goddesses of Hindu and yogic philosophy is that when you get down to the essence of the belief you'll find only one all-encompassing energy; a singular divinity that creates everything out of itself.

But the role the gods and goddesses serve is to help us, the humans, understand the attributes of divinity within ourselves. Every deity is an archetype, and each archetype resides within us. It's pretty cool when you delve into it, actually.

For instance, do you know how Ganesh came into being? Do you even know who Ganesh is?

He's the happy, big bellied, elephant headed being with one tusk and a mouse at his feet. There's a couple versions of his creation by his mother Shakti. One way I've heard his story told is this:

Once upon a time in a realm where time and space have no hold, Shakti was hanging out by herself. Shakti is the mother goddess; the feminine aspect of the universal energy. Her consort, Shiva (the archetype of masculine divinity), was gone a lot. He liked to sit on top of the highest mountain meditating for ages at a time.

So Shakti was alone, again, and decided she wanted a son to keep her company. Since Shiva wasn't around to help her out, she created a son herself. There are two versions of how this happened, but my favorite is that out of her own pure joy she laughed and Ganesh was born of that laughter.

Ganesh, being a young god, was a very powerful being. Shakti set him to the task of guarding her bath chamber while she bathed. She told him not to let anyone pass.

However, while Shakti was in the bath, Shiva came home. Not knowing any better, Shiva tried to get into the bathroom to see Shakti. But Ganesh blocked him.

At this point, Shiva's wondering who this kid thinks he is while trying to explain that it's really okay because that's his wife is in there. Ganesh, taking his mother's wishes very seriously, was adamant that Shiva could not pass.

After trying to reason with Ganesh, Shiva still couldn't get in and a full on fight ensues. Apparently it was quite impressive, considering these are gods we're talking about. Ganesh didn't budge, even when Shiva called in his buddies. Finally, after much epic battle, Shiva lopped off the kid's head and strolled in to see Shakti.

Boy was he in trouble! Shakti was furious that Shiva had beheaded their son. Now, if Mama ain't happy ain't nobody happy, so Shiva apologized his way into a "Don't worry, I'll sort it all out" and left to fix his unknowing mistake.

Shiva told his pals to go out and find the first head they saw. That happened to be an elephant, so Shiva took the elephant's head, put it on Ganesh, did a little divine magic and 'vwoallah', Ganesh was all good and had a shiny new trunk to boot.

Good story, 'eh? And that's just the tip of it. We haven't even started to identify all the symbolism within Ganesh himself, like his vehicle, the mouse, which represents Ganesh's skillful training of the easily distracted mind, or the sweets he holds which signify the bliss of enlightenment for those who follow wisdom to oneness.

You'll notice this story didn't exactly sound like it would have a thousand years ago. The telling of it has evolved, but the roots are set in the ground of the ancient past.

Storytelling is an art. It is a powerful form of communication that can be used to shower the senses with deep meaning. This exchange of ideas continues to evolve, and at the same time we are creatively passing on lessons and legends that have been handed down for a very, very long time.

What You Can Do to Grow in Your Spiritual Journey

Many years ago, at an Al-Anon meeting, someone asked, "Are we human beings on a spiritual journey? Or are we spiritual beings on a human journey?" From A Course in Miracles perspective I would say we are spiritual beings on a human journey. Underneath the limitations of our humanity, there is a boundless Light from which we can live. We can use our human journey as a classroom to learn about our true spiritual nature. There are many practices which can help us grow on our spiritual journey and, depending on your nature and circumstances, one may be more useful than another.

Below I list five practices that can access our Inner Light. Read through them and see if one or more stand out for you. Then focus on the practice to which you are drawn. Set yourself up for success. If you think you are ready to take action, make a plan to do the practice regularly for a specific amount of time. If you feel concerned about your self-discipline, or lack thereof, be gentle with yourself. Read and re-read the practice. Write it down and put it in places where you will see it and read it throughout the day. That alone will strengthen your ability to follow through down the road.

1. Chant. A very simple and powerful way to kickstart your spiritual growth is to chant, or recite, a mantra. You can try "Om Namah Shivaya"-I have been cleansed, balanced and empowered by it, and have offered it to many clients who report great results. Roughly translated it means, "I bow to the Divinity within me" but more important is the potent vibration that Om Namah Shivaya provides. It is pronounced the way it looks. You can search YouTube to hear variations for yourself and choose the one you like best. If you would prefer to use English, try "I am that I am" highly recommended by Sri Ramana Maharshi.

2. Pray. It is said that prayer is speaking to God and meditation is listening to His Answer. Most of us use prayer to beg and barter for what we want, and in this way we miss the point of prayer. A Course in Miracles says that the only meaningful prayer is to request that we be able to recognize what we already are. We already are that boundless Light which is eternal, peaceful, unified Oneness. As we ask God to help us identify with that Light rather than our personal lives, we will have a new perspective on whatever is paining, angering or scaring us.

3. Meditate. Meditation is the second part of prayer. Now we sit and listen. The way to do this is to clear our minds just like opening a door for God to enter. If we sit with the door closed, and get caught up in our thoughts, God has no entry point. When thoughts come, we can give them to God and in this way keep directing our minds back to God. Swami Chidvilasananda says that God is in the space between the thoughts. Just one brief opening and you will have a mystical experience that is beyond words.

4. Move. Some of us are too restless to sit quietly in meditation. There is the option of moving meditation, where we use yoga, dance, or qi gong, for example, to quiet the mind and help us get out of our own way. As long as we control our experience, we are blocking God. When we are willing to let God guide us, then any practice will work for us. Setting an intention to step back and let God lead the way before we start our day will accomplish this.

5. Breathe. Most of us are shallow breathers and don't know how it feels to fully inhale and exhale. We're too busy talking and running around to stop and invite a complete breath to fill us, nourish us, open us to Spirit. Spiritual energy rides on the breath. The breath carries the healing energy, like a train tranporting cargo, and deposits this life energy within us. We can direct it to specific parts of the body if that seems useful, or simply inflate on the inhale all over, like a balloon, and deflate on the exhale to empty the lungs of all toxins and the body of overall tension. There are countless breath techniques, called pranayama in yoga, which you can look into.

These five potent practices are tried and true techniques found in many spiritual teachings throughout the world. The more you do them, the more you learn from your own inner experience. If you would like more tools to help you grow in your spiritual journey, please drop me a request-there are plenty more to share.

How to Use a Common Sense Approach to Strength and Conditioning

Like clockwork, millions will decide they are too fat and out of shape and will attempt a weight loss or exercise program after the first of the year. Without a plan or an idea on what they want to accomplish, they fall by the wayside in a few months without really achieving their goals and objective. Chances are they had no real goals to begin with and were destined to fail before they even started.

Long term health and wellness through physical activity and sensible eating is nothing new. Many gurus tout the affects of the cheeseburger diet and couch potato program as a sure way to long term health issues. Your wellness program is just that, a program to gradually increase your endurance and conditioning through small steps and achievement of goals and milestones.

Your health and well being will only happen if you consistently follow a step by step approach in order to do any good. Starting small is a better strategy to mastering your goals in the long run and will help in preventing you from fizzling out in a few weeks.

It does not matter whether you are focused on weight loss or strength conditioning and training, having the right plan and tools to support your program can help you stay focused and on track.

Starting small with basic stretching and low impact exercises is a good way to get started. Try using resistance bands and a Yoga mat to begin your routine. Stick with basic exercises that will give your body a foundation to work from.

After working out and beginning to feel better and more confident that you are making strides in your program, you can graduate to other fitness tools that will increase your range and of endurance and conditioning. A Fluid Bike or elliptical trainer might be some equipment that will help you along your path. Cycling is an effective way to increase your stamina and lower your heart rate. A fluid or magnetic bike training system is easily setup in your exercise room to allow you to experience cycling through resistance and allows for a more realistic ride and beneficial workout.

In summary, taking a common sense approach to your health and training program will help you to keep you on track toward long term health through exercise and a balanced diet.

Yoga - What Exactly Is It?

The practice of yoga was developed by an Indian Hindu by the name of Patanjali way back in the year 300. The word itself means discipline and the whole purpose of yoga is to stretch the muscles, increase the levels of concentration and to strengthen the body in general. It is also a great way to relax and de-stress your body.

There is little wonder that such an ancient form of discipline has turned out to be so popular amongst athletes and modern day entertainers. However, yoga can be practiced by anyone as an occasional simple exercise routine or on a regular basis as a total way of life.

The people who take part in yoga are known as yogis and many of them use this form of discipline to reach a high level of consciousness. They respect the fact that there are certain things they should not be or do such as being greedy, hurting others, lying and stealing and they adhere to things they should do like being clean, feeling content each day, having self control, and leading a studious and devoted lifestyle.

Yogis train themselves how to have physical control over their bodies by taking full and deep breaths. This is considered by them to be a life force and they count their lifespan in the amount of breaths taken and not in the years of their age.

Yoga is different from other exercises as it assists the body to become more flexible as well as improving ones strength. Due to this, some of the yoga exercises and positions known as asanas can look a little strange. You may feel at first that you need to be some kind of contortionist to perform the exercises, but this is not case - you just need to completely relax. Yoga allows you to ease into the stretches gently and you are not required to force yourself into any position. The regularly used expression no pain no gain simply does not apply when practicing yoga. You simply do the best you can at the time and at some point in the future you will find yourself doing more.

Balance is demanded by all yoga positions and as you are unlikely to be able to get this right when thinking about whatever it was you watched on TV last night, you need to learn how to concentrate on what you are doing. Once you have perfected this art, you will discover that you can concentrate on other things much better too.

You will find yoga exercises copy nature and many yoga poses outline the shape of creatures such as the cat, cobra, crab, dog, eagle and tortoise.

For instance, in the cobra pose, you would ask yourself just what it would feel like to actually be a cobra. You lie on flat on your stomach with your forehead resting on the floor and as you breathe in, slowly roll your head backwards whilst supporting your body with your hands. Keep that position and then come back down slowly, all the time moving as a snake would do.

All yoga exercises have been carefully thought out to encourage serenity and strength and every move affects a gland, a muscle or a nerve center.

With yoga you can choose to perform particular exercises to get rid of certain types of back pain or leg pain experienced from jogging. You can also use yoga as preparation for a skiing trip or even to help you overcome your feelings of fear or depression.

The many asanas of yoga, how to do them and the way in which they can work for you can be found in any good yoga book. Do you remember doing handstands and cartwheels in the past? There you go - you may well have already done some yoga without ever even knowing it!
