Insider Secrets to the Business of Teaching Yoga, Part 1

If you are a Yoga teacher, or thinking about becoming a Yoga teacher, the concepts contained within this series will save you money and, potentially, earn you a lot more money. How much money you want to earn as a Yoga teacher, is up to you. If you are willing to put in your time, marketing your Yoga teaching skills, the sky is the limit. None of us has to teach Yoga; we choose to teach Yoga because we love it and know the many rewards of steady Yoga practice.

That is why I pass on Yoga Business and Marketing information to my Yoga teacher interns, friends, peers, Yoga coaching clients, and competitors. Many great Yoga teachers are guilty of unwise business decisions, and desperately scratch out a living, without the proper business skills.

Speaking of Yoga business competitors, you would be better off to network with other local Yoga teachers. Some of the neighboring Yoga studios, in Providence, RI, refer prospective Yoga students to me, and I do the same for them. You can't fill every Yoga niche and do you want to really try? Even McDonald's has a limit on the menu and we can all learn from this. Better to do one or a few things very well, than do nothing well at all.

"Yoga Business" - Is this an Oxymoron, a Conflict of Interest, or Blasphemy? Do you feel guilty taking a Yoga students' money? Why should you? What do your Yoga students expect you to live on? Would you feel bad paying for scuba lessons, skiing instruction, golf instruction, or a day with a fishing guide?

Of course not - because these instructors put in the time, practicing a skill, and are worth the money you pay them. If you have Yoga students who do not appreciate your skills in the same way - refuse to teach Yoga to them. You put in 200 or 500 hours of Yoga teacher training, worked on refining each aspect of teaching Yoga, and invested years of training as a Yoga student before that.

Yoga instructors deserve to be paid well. Continuing education courses for Yoga teachers, Yoga retreats, workshops, Yoga teacher seminars, books, Yoga correspondence courses for instructors, and Yoga videos are rarely free. If you join a local Yoga teacher association, or decide to become a registered Yoga teacher, that's not free either.

So, where does all this guilt about taking money for your Yoga teaching services come from? It comes from being a "giver." Yoga teachers are some of the biggest givers I have ever met. Which is nice, and restores my faith in humanity, but Yoga teachers are also supposed to be a living example of quality life. You cannot support your family, pay your rent, eat properly, or receive medical care by teaching Yoga for free.

How Yoga Helps Muscle Growth

Quickly go tell all your non-Yoga friends that they better start doing Yoga poses if they want to start building muscle.... what? I can hear you now!

There are many parts of Yoga (8 parts in fact), but here we are only concerned with the Yogic benefits of muscle stretching and body resistance training to really allow you to develop to another level of muscle building.

Leading by example are two actors (with nicely buffed bodies) that regularly practice this ancient Indian exercise is Matthew McConaughey and Spiderman's Tobey Maguire.

Both having lean muscular and athletic bodies.

MUSCLE STRETCH

In your younger days you were probably very flexible but as you aged, your body decided that stiffer shorter muscles were the way to go.

In your teens, your lower vertebrae starts to fuse, your hamstrings are no longer strings but more like surf boards, stiff and less flexible.

So for most of us adulthood brings on poor flexibility preventing a full range of motion in exercise, so we end up with limiting our results.

IF YOU DON'T GO ALL THE WAY DOWN ON A BARBELL SQUAT - TRY THIS!

Not performing a full range of motion means missing out on the full benefit of the exercise.
For your next Squat: - Lighten the load and go all the way down and then up and feel the difference.
The price of tight muscles is that you get less muscle growth from the same strength-training effort.

Yoga stretching helps circulates the blood through out your limbs, it counteracts tightness and promotes a better recovery after exercising.

A quicker recovery mean you can train again sooner.

WHY and HOW?

Strength through yogic stretching is directly related to your Golgi Tendon Reflex threshold. Not to be confused with Tibetan Gogi berries, that's another post all together.

The tendons are called Golgi Tendon Organs (GTOs), these are nerve endings within your tendons that deactivate or shuts down your muscles when you try to lift weights which are too heavy.

Regular stretching gives your muscles the ability to fire more efficiently without shutting down in response to stretched tendons.

GTOs are your protection against damage. Stops these from working, yes you will lift heavier but also damage to your body is likely.

When lifting weights and you fail with a weight on a max rep, it isn't just because of muscular fatigue: it's because your GTOs turned on and shut down your muscles.

IF YOU ARE HAVING PROBLEMS LIFTING HEAVY - TRY THIS!

Its unusual if you are able to lift your heaviest weight over all 5 sets, because your body needs preparation.
Try lifting all 5 sets at your heavies level, the first 2-3 sets will be difficult but the next 3-5 will seem to be easier! Why?
Cause your GTOs are saying not now but later... its a protection.
The best way to lift heavy is to do 1-3 warm up sets which is sending internal signals to the body to get ready... then "HIT IT" lift your heaviest on the 3-5 sets and watch your records increase.

SO HOW DO YOU RAISE YOUR GTO THRESHOLD?

By stretching your muscles and ligaments regularly you can raise your GTO levels, gaining a strength increase by as much as 15 to 20%. (Sounds unbelievable!).

The higher your GTO threshold, the more intensity you can train with which leads to greater strength gains.

DURING WEIGHT LIFTING

Yoga stretching between weightlifting sets keeps your muscles flexible and loose.

Your muscles will need the added rest given to them between sets when the static stretching principle is applied.

When you are done with your workout, you will have stretched all of the major muscle groups without taking up much additional time.

TIP - Full stretching sessions should be done only after your weight training is completed as this tends to cool down the muscles.

Vrksasana (Tree Pose),
Trikonasana (Triangle Pose),

Importance Of Breathing In Yoga

If you've vowed to practice yoga as part of your lifestyle, you're on the right track. Yoga is one of the best ways to achieve a general sense of well-being. It is is not only linked to healthier body functions but also to an improved disposition in life. Various cultures have become comfortable with this oriental brand of healthy living and more and more people are convinced that this is the release they have been longing for. Cosmopolitan life can take a toll on people and for something like yoga to provide a respite is always well-appreciated. So if you've decided to make it a part of your life, you've done just the right thing.

If it's going to be your first encounter with this wellness regimen, however, you may be overwhelmed by the many things you have to learn about it. Not to say it's going to be all that simple, but the first and most significant thing you'd like to learn about it is the value of breathing. Breathing is said to be that meeting point between a person's body and his mind. According to yoga experts, breathing alone can change the way your mind functions and it can actually change the way you think. As we all know, yoga is an activity that is hinged on breathing techniques that can go from as short as two minutes.

To get the best of yoga then, you have to get the best of your breathing. And this you can do only by finding yourself a quiet place where you'll be away from all distractions. It is also a good idea to find a place where you'll be most comfortable. That means ventilation must be good, and you must be in a good position. The room must not be too crowded because this can count as a distraction. Your surroundings must be free from clutter and you must be able to move freely. Yoga requires you to move from one position to another. If there are any objects that can stop you from moving freely, this can cause you to lose your concentration.

When it comes to your breathing itself, relax and don't let yourself exert too much force. This is going to defeat the purpose of those breathing exercises. You have to breathe slowly and deeply. There is a tendency for you to feel light-headed when you get deep into this level breathing, though, so when you feel this happening, get yourself back to your normal breathing pace. It's good to do this with a friend so you can check on each other. You don't need to be in a contest when doing those breathing exercises.

Six Characteristics of Powerful Grassroots Communities

We've all had the exhilarating experience of meshing with others to create a synergistic experience, one where our spirits were uplifted. In these moments, the energy of every individual member of a group contributes to and merges into a collective energy, a synergistic force around which anything seems possible-and often is. But all too often we've come away from these endeavors without the tools to sustain that energy collectively or individually.

Since the 1980s, I have worked as a business consultant, and have consistently observed six key characteristics present in highly effective groups. These same six characteristics are used by physicists to describe the makeup of subatomic particles that are in essence, energy. Six thousand years earlier sages depicted the nature of energy with these same characteristics and this became a foundation for yoga and Ayurvedic medicine.

Relational/Holistic: At the subatomic level, nothing exists unless it engages another energy source in a complex web of relations. In fact, matter is nothing more than interconnected fields of quantum energy. When we engage in relationships with others, we are touching something sacred and inherent to all life. When a group's values include teamwork, social connections, networking, informing, and brainstorming, they are creating an interconnected field that mimics the existence of every particle.

Intention/Alignment:
Scientists discovered that the moment they inquire into the nature of subatomic particles, the phenomenon they are looking for happens. Our thoughts and beliefs affect the outcome of our endeavors. That same power is amplified in a group when we align our intention with others in a shared vision; the group energy empowers that focus. Shared vision and corresponding goals require dialogue, listening, and ownership. This focus identifies the standards, goals, and values for the group which should be supported through ongoing positive and constructive feedback.

Diversity/Balance:
Quantum energy is the seed of our diverse universe. Within this common seed lies the manifestation of the vast material realm. When groups are inclusive regardless of race, culture, and social skills, they embrace the common seed that we all are and align with our deeper nature. Intolerance opposes energy's nature. Quantum energy also has symmetry and dynamic balance. Likewise, maintain a balance within teams, be aware of being too dominante, stressful, or lethargic.

Possibility/Uncertainty:
The quantum realm is not a world of actual physical events; instead, it is a world filled with numerous unrealized possibilities for actions. Where there is possibility, there is also uncertainty. When a group takes on a new initiative or develops individual's talents and passions they embrace possibility. This translates into staff development, a mentoring program, acknowledging successes, and looking at what needs improvement. These actions foster a learning environment on all levels.

Open/Flowing:
Scientists refer to the quantum realm as "the dissolution of the rigid frame." In the higher realm there is not even a frame of time. Organizations and process that are rigid oppose the deeper nature of energy. We need to dissolve the rigid judgments and structures we build in our lives, our relations, and organizations. Empowered grassroots groups have: listening, forgiveness, transparency, and spontaneity as part of their group's culture. A mechanism for conflict resolution exists. Pockets of withheld information are rare. There is a willingness to evolve as an organization.

Love/Synergy:
Energy travels in waves. When two waves are in sync there is synergy. When we are in sync with quantum energy's deeper nature we maintain a high vibration that is felt as love. Love in its purest form has no conditions or forms attached; this is where brotherhood and sisterhood flourish.

When these six behaviors are integrated into a group's culture, that organization functions at a high energetic level. Participants are uplifted and rejuvenated. This makes logical sense when you start with the scientific fact that "everything is energy", communities generate group energy fields, and when groups align with the nature of energy these group energy fields vibrate at a higher level where love, trust, and collaboration flourish. In that kind of "High Energy" environment anything is possible.

An Objective View of Yoga

When you think of Yoga, what is the picture you see within your "mind's eye?" Many people still think of Hatha Yoga, and its many sub-styles, as the only Yoga around. This is due to the fact that outside India, Hatha Yoga (Union by Physical Mastery), is most commonly seen.

Therefore, this is understandable - except there are many forms of Yoga, and many are much less physical forms that are sometimes misunderstood. Yoga does not have to be practiced in an Ashram or on a Yoga mat. To be beneficial, Yoga can be practiced anywhere, at any time, in any shape or form.

Just by giving people help, without asking for anything in return, you are practicing Karma Yoga. By praying, you are practicing a form of Bhakti Yoga. Also, by seeking and finding the pure, but unobvious truth, you may be practicing Jnana Yoga, (Union by Knowledge).

Yoga literally means "Unity" or "Union," but each Yoga style has within itself a unique way to achieve the union of mind, body, and spirit. Yoga is non-confronting, non-conflicting, and can be integrated with many physical disciplines and religious practices. Any style of Yoga will integrate with other forms of Yoga and healing methods.

Yoga teachers "spread the word," but they must teach the more popular physical aspects of Yoga, if they want to keep their students. This is why many people get an incomplete picture of a complete health maintenance system for the three aspects of mind, body, and spirit. All three aspects of health are of equal importance, but the physical aspect is more easily realized.

Whether you are a beginner, long-time Yoga practitioner, or a Yoga teacher, your knowledge will make a difference for the best. Just by showing loving kindness and mindfulness to your friends, co-workers, and family, you will alter this world.

Therefore, the proliferation of Yoga is a miracle and a gift to mankind. By helping others, you will feel gratification that is helpful to your own mental, physical, and spiritual health. In turn, you, and your actions, will evolve with loving kindness as your guide.

This is the fundamental key to good health and well being: Give to others and you will feel much better about yourself. There is a teacher within all of us, even if you only share the gift of Yoga with one friend.

Kamloops Yoga: Meditate Your Way to Inner Peace

Yoga has been in practice for over thousands of years. In its most traditional sense, it is defined as the union between the individual and the universal. As a fitness routine, it is a great way to get in shape by toning your muscles and aligning your body. It is also an emotionally and mentally fulfilling exercise, as the breathing and meditation exercises serve to pull you away from the problems that weigh you down.

Let go and live in the moment

In this day and age, it is easy to get caught up in our fears and problems. Oftentimes, our negative thoughts can become so overwhelming that it virtually cripples us. Meditation is the practice of letting things go. It is a practice of emptying the mind of all its thoughts and finding your center so you can be at peace. Many people think that it is impossible to keep their minds under control, but when they take the time out to meditate, the stress of the entire working day melts away, allowing a moment of peace to permeate your mind.

As more and more people practice yoga, they begin to find that their thoughts do not allow them to savor living for the present moment. Moving in yoga and focusing on the breath and the body allow you to think of nothing but the present, and allow you to cast away your thoughts and emotions. This constant act of letting go allows us to dive into the present moment again and again. When practiced earnestly and properly in yoga, the habit begins to find its way into our behavior.

Positive physical effects

Research suggests that meditation also has some positive physiological effects. When a person is stressed, the vein walls contract and this is the cause of high blood pressure. Meditation allows blood to flow easily by expanding the veins. Stress is also caused by lots of electric tension in the brain. Excess electric tension gives way to headaches, one of the most common stress-related ailments. Meditation has been shown to significantly reduce electric tension in the brain, allowing it to rest and heal itself, which is why you feel much more alive and refreshed after meditation.

Yoga is the union of the mind, body and spirit. When one aspect is damaged, the other two do not receive the full benefits of yoga. When your body is in good shape, your mind and spirit will follow.

The more you practice meditation, the more you are able to look deep within yourself and examine patterns and behaviors that hold you back from becoming the person you want to be. Doing this in conjunction with the physical aspect of yoga will help you train your mind to return to a peaceful state.
