Sivananda Yoga - What is Class Like?

Sivananda is based on the teachings of Swami Sivananda and is a form of Hatha where the primary focus is on preserving health and well being of the yogi. In order to teach it, one needs to graduate from the Sivananda happinesslifetime.com Yoga Teacher Training Course. It consists of four weeks of intensive training that prepares the students to train others. This training program was developed by Swami Vishnu Devananda in 1969, when he moved to America to teach his Swami's yoga techniques. This training is only available at the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Ashrams, with headquarters in Quebec, Canada and its affiliates worldwide.

A Sivananda class is very different from the Ashtanga routine. This training is primarily focused on frequent relaxation and full yogi breathing techniques and is very encouraging for the beginners. It incorporates the student's daily life into the training session, creating an individualized session for each trainee. It is based on five basic rules:

-Proper exercises (asana)

-Proper breathing (pranyama)

-Proper relaxation (savasana)

-Proper diet (Vegeterian)

-Positive thinking and meditation (Vedanta and Dhyana)

A Sivananda session is very slow paced and allows detailed examination of each pose. Each session starts with surya namaskara or sun salutation and then proceeds to achieving expertise of the twelve basic asana or postures.

Proper Exercise:

-Headstand

-Shoulder stand

-Plow

-Fish

-Seated forward bend

-Cobra

-Locust

-Bow

-Seated spinal twist

-Crow

-Standing forward bend

-Triangle

Proper Breathing:

Breathing is a very important aspect of yoga, and to attain the highest benefit from a session, it is imperative to accomplish full yogic breathing and utilize the lungs to their full capacity. Sivananda uses a combination of three basic types of breathing techniques to attain full yogic breathing:

-Clavicular breathing, which is the shallowest and requires maximum effort to obtain minimum amount of air.

-Thoracic breathing, which uses the expanding of the muscles in the rib cage.

-Deep abdominal breathing, which brings air to the lowest and largest part of the lungs. This makes proper use of the diaphragm and is slow and deep.

When all these are combined, a yogi is able to achieve a deep breath with continuing the inhalation through the clavicle.

Proper Relaxation:

Proper Relaxation is achieved when the following three forms of relaxation are all achieved. Relaxation is not complete until the yogi conquers spiritual relaxation.

-Physical

-Mental

-Spiritual

Proper Diet:

Proper diet for a yogic means a purely vegetarian diet. It comprises of pure, natural and simple foods that can be easily absorbed and which supports good health. Yogis prefer organic foods as they provide better nutritional value.

Positive Thinking and Meditation:

Sivananda encourages positive thinking and promotes its students to attain levels of meditation where they can concentrate wholly on the inner self. The instructors usually lead the students through a 14 point mediation routine.

With Sivananda, the yogi gains physical, mental and spiritual wellness. It teaches in a slow and gentle way to achieve perfection in each of the above five fundamentals points.

Sun Salutation - Complete Workout For Your Mind and Body in Just Ten Minutes

Sun Salutation (Surya Namaskar) is part of Hatha Yoga (the "physical" part of Yoga).

Sun Salutation has multiple mental and physical benefits. In only ten minutes you can achieve a low impact workout that combines both Resistance Training (e.g. weight lifting) and Cardiovascular ("Cardio") Training.

The fitness community accepts the fact that cardiovascular exercise has reduced benefits (e.g. fat burning ends once the cardio exercise stops). It also has disadvantages like tear and wear of joints.

Resistance Training on the other hand, has multiple benefits: increases muscle mass hence more fat burning capability, increases bone density to mention just a few. The drawback: it is painful (I know I don't like the feeling of burning in my muscles, even though I know it is good for me). Resistance training is also time consuming and it may increase blood pressure momentarily if not done properly.

A good compromise is Interval Training that consists of hard alternated with light pace cardio exercise. And this is exactly where Sun Salutation comes in. It is similar with Interval Training by combining a low impact resistance training (push-ups, squats) with cardio exercise. Even better, the benefits of Sun Salutation don't stop at the physical level: your mind benefits as well.

Regular practice of Sun Salutation benefits your body with:

Increased blood oxygenation by copious lung ventilation and this is great news for your heart. Stretches and tones your muscles keeping them supple and flexible. Clears your elimination channels helping your body rid itself of toxins. This is especially good in the morning after many hours of lack of movement during sleep (the lymphatic system eliminates toxins through movement). Stimulates and tones your Endocrine system (especially the Thyroid, the master gland that controls all the other glands). Tones up the internal abdominal organs by alternate stretching, compression cycles that results in better digestion and bowel movement. Increases spine and waist flexibility.

The mental benefits of Sun Salutation are similar with meditation. You can look at Sun Salutation as meditation in movement. It is not random that Tai-Chi (Chinese) or Kata in Karate, have a similar focussed mind on movement approach at the core of their practice. Sun Salutation helps to:

Increase your mental focus and concentration. Reduce depression, anxiety and stress by reducing key markers like Cortisol. Increase the quantity of "good mood" neurotransmitters like Serotonin. Increase mind to body coordination which is very good especially for older persons.

If done properly, twelve repetitions of Sun Salutation (six pairs of Sun Salutation starting with one leg and then the other), go a long way. It takes roughly 30-40 seconds for one complete cycle (twelve postures flowing from one to the other). Add two minutes of relaxation at the end, to allow your body implement the "reset" you just performed, and you are ready for the new day.

Ten minutes all together in the morning will help you look at the unwinding life from a different perspective.

Among many Sun Salutation techniques, Sivananda Sun Salutation stands out as an graceful flow of twelve postures developed by Swami Sivananda, a practicing medical doctor (MD) before taking up monasticism, therefore developed by a person with knowledge of the human body.

Different Kinds of Schools of Feng Shui

Feng Shui has existed for centuries. Since that time, various trends of this tradition have developed. Even though the basic principles stay the same, each features a slightly distinct approach for the topic:

Form School:

? Centers predominantly on the curves of physical landscapes, their particular form, dimension and watercourse, and the connection between the physical formations as well as a dwelling.

? The 4 Directions of the compass are represented by the 4 celestial animals; the Green Dragon (East), the Red Phoenix (South), the White Tiger (West) and also the Black Turtle (North).

Traditional Chinese Compass School

? Originated in China over 3000 years in the past, having the first textual reference pointed out in 256BCE (Before Christian Era)

? Founded on a scientific, formulaic way of Feng Shui which is thousands of years old.

? Career sector with the Eight Trigrams is usually focused to the magnetic North..

The above mentioned techniques are practiced by The Geomancer.

Black Hat Sect (BHS) Tantric Buddhist

A more recent way of thinking, which is extensively employed in the U.S.A. Developed 15 years back by Thomas Lin Yun, it is a hybrid of Tibetan Buddhism, Taoism as well as Feng Shui simplified for Western preferences. It has got a huge cult following.

With this traditional school, instead of using the traditional magnetic compass (Lo Pan) to ascertain directions, each home or room is evaluated by the position of its doorway. BHS group says that the primary doorway to each room faces the career sector. This may result in adjacent rooms or homes having apparently contradictory directions.

? Popularized in the USA since 1986

? Founded on a more spiritual way to Feng Shui

? Refers towards the 8 Trigrams as being the 'Ba Gua'

? Career sector regarding the Eight Trigrams is always focused towards the principal door.

Intuitive Feng Shui

There's much talk regarding 'intuitive feng shui'. However, Feng Shui, which has its very own list of guidelines, can't be regarded more instinctive than either geography or physics. Personal users might be a lot more perceptive than others, but Feng Shui modifications must be founded on the principles and not simply a 'sensation'.

How do I pick a practitioner that is right for me?

Go with your instincts! In the event that what the particular practitioner recommends makes sense to you and you feel better about the changes he/she proposes, you've located a match! However, if placing a sculpture of Buddha near your own front door, putting red Avery labels on your walls, hanging red-tasseled bamboo flutes above your doorways and placing a 'green cylindrical object on your roof, to attract nurturing wood energy' are a little bit far from your own decorating type - dismiss your own practitioner. (Payment does not have to be encased in red envelopes also!) Besides, TRUE Feng Shui treatments utilize only the five components - Water, Earth, Fire, Metal and Wood, and never such things as mirrors, flutes, incense or prayers!

Why You Need Fitness in Your Life

Many people only look for the quick fix and fail to recognize that true fitness involves the entire human element: the body, mind and spirit. Statistics will reveal those who've adopted the fitness lifestyle are abel to deal with the daily stresses of life, maintain good physical and mental health and actually want to continue proper nutrition and exercise habits.

How important is your exercise routine and the overall health of your body? Participating in physical training teaches the body to work as a cohesive unit and allows one to understand how each body part effects another. People that have developed the abilities to survive and flourish in their natural environment, through genetics or proper training, tend to develop the hard, lean and muscular bodies that many strive for.

A balanced body of fitness is the ability to effectively use different physical abilities in a fluid and effortless movement. Other advantages include a richer and more intense level of exercise. If you have a weight loss coach he or she will help you by providing support, motivation, and will teach you 'secrets' that already fit people seem to know.

Just remember: physical activity everyday is the key to fitness. If you really want to develop core strength of the body AND mind try yoga. Although many people think yoga is a solitaire activity, many yoga schools now offer classes for partnered yoga. Generally your partner will be someone you already know like a spouse or friend. This can help you deepen your relationship with that person and create new levels of intimacy. However, many people prefer to go to yoga classes alone and meet up with a new partner each time.

Yoga isn't only an exercise of the body, but your mind and soul as well. Yoga physical movements go hand in hand with meditations. It originated in India so long ago that scientists have found artifacts that depict people in yoga positions dating back to 3000 B.C. I strongly recommend it.

Aging and Exercise - Get Fit, Eat Right and Be Healthier

Physical inactivity is one of the biggest and most common health concerns in today's world, especially among the older set. Those that do not stay active and watch their diet might well be the ones who will dread getting older when those "old" ailments start attacking their health.

It doesn't have to be like that.

It's a fact. You can help yourself as you mature by taking up an exercise program, and specifically, getting involved in some strength training, as well as watch your diet. Don't buy into the notion that because you are getting older you should start taking it easy on yourself. You know, that "I'm getting older" thing so I'm going to start slacking off on my health.

No. This is the absolute worst time for you to start slacking with your health.

There are so many health reasons to start strength training right now. Begin before you start having problems with your digestive system, your back, your bones getting brittle, and so many other problems. You don't want your body to lose its strength, this is when you need it even more than ever.

And exercise isn't enough, you have to consider that diet, too. Exercise alone isn't enough to keep you healthy and young looking. If you don't get the proper nutrition, your body won't be able to handle the exercise you need to have it conducting.

You need a lifestyle change and now is a good time to do that.

Having a sedentary life may increase your chances of getting diabetes, cancer, or heart disease. We all have a chance of getting a disease at any time in our lives, so if we can decrease those chances by a few small changes to our lifestyle, isn't it worth it?

Aren't YOU worth it?

Walking, cycling, stretching, Pilates, yoga, dancing, and other activities all help keep you fit and in shape as you get older, but to keep your muscles strong to help support your bones, you need to take up a strength training regimen. You'll need to start slow and gradual and then build up as your body tells you it can handle it.

There is a secret to growing old gracefully and that is to love who you are, what you do, and to take care of yourself. Because you know that you are the only one who can do that for yourself.

Look forward to the new and improved version of a mature adult; one who is fit, strong, and active.

Committing to Training

So you have decided you want to lose body fat and get in shape. What does it take? It takes a commitment to nutrition and training, that's what! Don't kid yourself, there's no magic trick out there. So why throw money at a bunch of useless gadgets or 'fad of the week' diet pills when the real 'magic formula' is simply to COMMIT.

What kinds of tools can you use to keep you committed? Here's a few of them:

Gym Membership: yes, it costs a bit of money to join a gym but the trade-off in this case is worth it (assuming you actually go to the gym and use the equipment). Sometimes knowing you've paid the money is motivation enough to get you there so that you don't have to feel like you've wasted the money you spent on it. Once you're actually there, the tools available to you at your gym will likely include aerobics, yoga, kickboxing classes (amongst other types of classes), free weights including barbells, dumbbells (and if you're really lucky, kettlebells), weight machines, cable machines, cardio machines (including treadmills, rowing machines, elliptical trainers), bosu and fitness balls, stretching areas... the list goes on and on. Just make sure you actually do schedule time to get to the gym and use this fantastic equipment available to you.

Personal Trainer: hiring a Personal Trainer can be a great tool to keep you committed. After all, they're going to give you a program best suited to your goals, and then they're going to see you on regularly scheduled occasions. They'll be expecting a report of your workouts since the last time you saw each other, as well as pushing you to your maximum potential during the workouts the trainer supervises you on.

Friends and Family: tell everyone and anyone who will listen about your goals and plans to reach your goals. You'd be surprised how interested and supportive people can be. Ask them to make you accountable. The more people you tell the more likely you are to stay committed, just out of the simple emotion of not wanting to let these people down by failing.

Internal Motivation: this one is all on you. Let's face it, true commitment comes from inside oneself. Only you have the final power and will to make it happen. Find that thing inside of you that you can use to drive yourself towards your goal, because it is in there, you just have to locate it and use it. And then never, ever take your eye off that goal.

Results: use any results you experience to inspire you and drive you even harder. Looking in the mirror or stepping on that scale and seeing a change for the better can be intensely motivating. The better you do, the more committed you will find yourself becoming. After all, results is what you want and when you get those results USE THEM to your advantage to get MORE results!

Good Luck! You can do it! The power to make it happen is yours!
