The Nintendo Wii Gets The Thumbs Up From Women

Video games publishers have been working hard to target their games towards women but this has been no easy task. Many women are not interested in shoot-em-ups or violent games and playing meaningless games for hours is not something they have time for. It is said that women play to achieve something and games like sudoku, brain training games and general knowledge games that are easy to pick up and put down do just this by exercising the brain.

The revolutionary Nintendo Wii launched in late 2006 has introduced an new concept in video gaming and has seen more and more women getting involved. The physical nature of the game play with the Nintendo Wii has the added appeal of 'achieving something' - maybe the thinking is that you can get fit and lose calories while having fun, and all from the comfort of your front room! It would certainly be more cost effective than going to the gym. The social side of gameplay with the Nintendo Wii creates another plus point also, as the whole family can get involved, removing the 'isolation' factor of other video games consoles.

The newly announced Nintendo Wii game Wii Fit, is set to be a hot seller and could have women reaching for their purse strings. Wii Fit is a full on exercise game set to give you more of a workout than Wii Sports. The game features over 40 different activities and is designed to keep you physically fit via a dedicated peripheral, the wireless Wii Balance board which comes with the game. Training falls into 4 different categories: aerobics, yoga, muscle conditioning and balance games. The calorie busting fun of Wii Fit could be used as a slimming tool which would be a move into the lifestyle category, so men, women, children and grandparents alike could all benefit while still retaining all the fun of video gaming. It is thought that Wii Fit will hit our stores in early 2008 although Nintendo haven't given a released date yet.

The Nintendo Wii obviously reaches areas of the market that other video gaming consoles do not, so its no wonder that the Nintendo Wii console has created such a buzz since its launch and flown off the shelves for months after.

Yoga Teacher Certification - Your Untapped Potential

What is your untapped potential? Why do people take a certification course to become a Yoga teacher? Could happinesslifetime.com Yoga teacher training help you to find inherent talents that have remained hidden inside you? Let's look at these, and many other questions, related to finding natural resources within each of us.

What is your untapped potential? Most of us let a few set backs in life guide us down a well-beaten path that is traveled by many. Most people do not consider their full potential. Instead, they become conditioned to settle for less from life. They "play it safe," and become extremely conscious of risk.

Your untapped potential is your ability that lies hidden in dormancy. You may not have had time to consider what you really want to do in life. Assessing your natural talents is a start, but envisioning where your natural talents could carry you is your untapped potential.

Why do people take a certification course to become a Yoga teacher? There are a wide variety of reasons why people take intensive courses. Some interns may feel a calling toward teaching Yoga as a vocation. Some choose to teach as a part-time hobby.

There are many, who take Yoga teacher courses, to help friends and family members. In this case, they are seeking enough information to teach safely. Rarely do interns have visions of a big Yoga teacher salary. It is possible to earn respectable wages, but this requires teachers to market themselves.

The marketing aspect tends to be a "turn off" for those who do not seek full time employment. This runs parallel to the mindset of many artists and writers, who begin to realize that a successful marketing campaign may require 50%, or more, of their time.

Could happinesslifetime.com Yoga teacher training help you to find inherent talents that have remained hidden inside you? Yes, a Yoga teacher intensive course makes it possible to tap into the inner-self through self-realization. For anyone who experiences this awakening of consciousness, the world around them has changed.

This change is due to a transformation from within. At this point it is up to each individual, as to what he or she will do with complete awareness. A few may use it to garner a respectable Yoga instructor salary, while most will use the information they learn to help others.

Untapped potential means many things to different people, but it usually comes down to our personal values. Within each of us, what we see as valuable will be different. Regardless of our differences, a Yoga teacher intensive will guide us to find our true purpose in life.

3 Simple Yoga Exercises For Ripped Abs

Core abdominal training and power is perhaps the most important aspect of physical fitness, and yoga is an excellent science to help target and develop this region. According to yoga, the abdominal area is governed by the Solar Plexus Chakra, called the Manipura Chakra in Sanskrit, and this chakra is responsible for not just providing the body with the physical energy it needs, but is also responsible for your willpower and strength of character.

Yoga abdominal exercises work on many dimensions of your being. They not just tone and strengthen the stomach muscles, but they also open and balance the Manipura Chakra mentioned above. Thus, not only is your core strength and power improved, but, also your willpower and strength of character developed. In this article I will give three excellent yoga exercises for developing this all important center.

1. Single Yoga Leg Lifts:

Lie on your back with your hands underneath your buttocks palms facing down. The hand position is to support your lower back. If you feel pressure or discomfort in your lower back, go ahead and roll more of your arms underneath you, this will give even more lower back support.

Now lift your left leg up to ninety degrees in a slow, smooth motion keeping it as straight at the knee as possible. Inhale as you lift you lift up, then exhale and bring the leg back down. Next repeat this exercise with the right leg. Continue in this fashion, lifting alternate legs to ninety degrees for one to three minutes.

Take a break in between if you need to. Remember never to overdo anything when it comes to yoga. Slow and steady is the golden rule.

2. Double Yoga Leg Lifts:

Once you complete your single leg lifts take a short break and then try the same exercise but this time lift both legs together is a smooth motion to ninety degrees and then back down. Again try to keep the legs as straight as possible. Keep the hands underneath the buttocks as above to support the lower back.

3. Criss-Cross Legs:

You will find the above two exercise really target the central abs, and this exercise will attack the obliques, which are the stomach muscles that line the side of the abdominal. For this exercise, again remain on your back with the hands underneath your buttocks palms facing down, then raise your legs twelve to eighteen inches above the floor and keeping the toes pointed begin to rapidly criss-cross them.

By criss-cross here, I mean that let the legs cross over each other at the ankles, where fist the right leg crosses over the top of the left, and then the left crosses over the the top of the right. This action will really work the stomach muscles and is excellent training for abdominal strength and toning.

Summary:

So there you have three excellent exercises for toning and strengthening your abdominal muscles and activating the Solar Plexus Chakra. These exercises also provide the added benefit of helping your digestive system and is an excellent set for those who are just starting out their yoga practice.

Texans Find Qigong as a Response to the Obesity Epidemic

It wasn't long ago that workout programs were limited to variations on the basics: jogging, hiking, team sports, like basketball or soccer, and, if one was lucky enough to have a home or fitness club swimming pool, a few good laps. Even exercise machines tended to only simulate the same activities. Treadmills, stair climbers, stationary bikes, and elliptical trainers were a bit like the hamster-wheel version of trying to enjoy the great outdoors, indoors.

The emphasis was on discipline, and going as long and as hard as a thumping heart would allow. Pushing to utter exhaustion and stumbling out with sweat-soaked clothes were good signs. But times, they are a'changin’, and, with a ballooning obesity epidemic on the nation's hands, contributing, in part, to a growing health insurance crisis, this can only mean good things to come. Texas ' obesity rate alone is 27%, 3 percentage points higher than the national average.

This is not to say that a hard, sweaty workout doesn't have its place. Particularly for the young and joint-healthy, strenuous exercise sessions can show incredible benefits. But, in the past fifteen years, new methods of research have demonstrated that increased endurance and decreased risk of certain diseases – such as atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) and diabetes— and improved muscle strength, loss of fat content, lower stress levels, and better overall health can be achieved through practices like qigong, interval training, yoga, and physically-based, interactive video games, such as Dance Dance Revolution.

Texas , too, is realizing this need for varied exercise options, and cities like Dallas and Austin nourish thriving yoga studios, pilates classes, and martial arts academies.

These may all seem like familiar options to the young-adult Texas crowd, but, a little more than a decade ago, qigong master Chunyi Lin couldn't attract a half dozen students. Now, he runs his own center in Minnesota , travels across the country conducting workshops, and teaches packed classes of sixty or more at a time. “Qigong [has been] growing like crazy in the United States in the past few years…People want to be more proactive with their health care."

Americans are turning less and less to their individual health insurance companies to hand them laboratory prescriptions, and more and more to taking control of their own health through preventative care, including stress-reduction techniques.

In addition to cardiovascular fitness, the ever-increasing health-conscious population is seeking longevity, reduced stress, and overall mental and physical improvements. Let's face it: Americans are stressed out. Folks in Texas , and the rest of the nation's populace, are starting to realize that stress alone is causing a good portion of one’s mental and physical issues.

Qigong, a broad term for several types of energy-based practices, is growing as at least a partial solution to this problem. Through the use of slow, measured movements and deep breathing, this ancient Chinese physical art has shown evidence of reducing pain and inflammation, increasing focus and concentration, improving immunity, lowering stress levels, and providing for better overall well-being. Yoga, an even more popular practice, offers a range of workouts—from sweat-inducing, muscle-cramping regimens, to measured, deep-breathing sessions suitable for all ages.

Interval training is also hitting the market again. After a brief stint of popularity in the 90's, the exercise program seemed to fade, kept alive by cloistered professional athletes and specialized fitness chains, like Curves. Interval training alternates between short bursts of high-intensity activity, and slower, lower-energy stints. After short sessions of interval bike training spread over two weeks, a 2005 double-blind study found that 75% of its subjects increased their endurance by 100%.

Another study this year found that, after two weeks of similar training (which entailed seven interval workouts), the practice improved the cardio function of its participants by 13% and their ability to burn fat by 36%. The results were similar for all fitness levels—from the borderline sedentary to the dedicated athletes—according to Talanian, lead author of the study and exercise scientist at Ontario 's University of Guelph . That means almost anyone can do it and should expect to experience tangible results within weeks.

Interval training seems to work so well, in part, because high-intensity bursts recruit new muscle fibers, while low-intensity periods allow those muscles to rid themselves of waste products created during the workout. Contrary to popular beliefs as of a decade ago, this method actually increases endurance by a greater percentage than steady-paced, high-intensity exercise sessions. Such relatively quick, tangible results, for most exercisers, keeps them working out.

Consistent workouts not only mean feeling and looking better, but also increased immune function, which, in the long run, translates to fewer incidences of disease. Exercisers aren't the only ones who love it; health insurance companies do, too.

“Any form of exercise that recruits new muscle fibers is going to enhance the body’s ability to metabolize carbohydrates and fat," said Ed Coyle, director of the human performance laboratory at the University of Texas, Austin.

The only real guidelines? Higher-energy bursts should elevate heart rate to 80 to 85% of optimal performance, and the lower-energy periods should never last long enough to decrease heart rate to resting levels. Interval trainers should always warm up first, take 24- hours between sessions to give the body time to recover, and never attempt the program if over the age of 60, or at risk for heart attack, stroke, or other cardiovascular ailments without the consent of a qualified physician.

Technological trends cannot be ignored, either. As usual, children are leading the way. Dance Dance Revolution, an interactive Japanese video game that hit the Asian market about ten years ago, is now recognized as such a popular, effective, and entertaining workout, that more than 1,500 American schools are expected to integrate it into their curriculum by 2010, in the face of a growing obesity epidemic.

Recent studies in Houston and Dallas revealed alarming obesity trends in children under 18, and Texas schools are now considering revamping their physical education programs in response. Dance Dance Revolution may be an intelligent option: utilizing a foot touch pad and on-screen cues, participants learn increasingly complicated, progressively fast-paced dance moves. The game can be played individually, or in competition, which appeals to a broader audience. One need not be particularly athletic, nor competitive, to participate; the only requirement being the willingness and ability to move on cue.

“I’ll tell you one thing: they don’t run in here like that for basketball," said Bill Hines, a physical education teacher in Morgantown , West Virginia , where the game was integrated.

So maybe workouts don't have to be so much work. Through variety and open-mindedness, anything that gets a body moving, a heart rate up, or stress levels down, is worth a shot. And, it can even be a rewarding cultural experience. Qigong, martial arts like aikido and jujitsu, and ashtanga yoga classes can elevate more than just fitness awareness levels. Who knows, you may even get a discount on that health insurance premium over time…And don't worry—pronunciation guides usually come with the class.

Yoga Exercise in Support of Your Physical Health and Longevity

Yoga does not see a distinction between your body and the mind; and this is an understanding that traditional western psychology has also concluded for quite some time now (the link between mental well being as well as physical health, and vice versa).

Yoga is certainly a process which involves relieving blocked tension and also energy in the body, and helping make your muscles, tendons, joints, ligaments, as well as all other parts function to their greatest potential.

Yoga considers that we humans are optimally created, by mother nature, to be flexible and agile, and stiffness and not enough mobility only appear if your body is unhealthy or out of alignment.

Consequently, many individuals have found themselves in a yoga class, or on a yoga mat at home in front of a Yoga training video or DVD, in the hopes of improving their physical health; and perhaps you may be one of them. In the event that that's the situation, then continue reading.

There are proved physical advantages associated with yoga, which include:

Improved flexibility and range of movement

Decreased discomfort in joints and muscles

Better immune system

Stronger lung capacity and therefore higher quality respiration

Increased metabolic rate (which can result in weight loss!)

Increased quality of sleep (especially because of much better breathing and a more oxygenated body)

Improved muscle strength

Considering the fact that certain yoga procedures require postures to be perfected, yoga exercise has always helped promote the body's overall flexibility; it also aids in lubricating the joints, ligaments and tendons.

Yoga detoxifies by increasing the flow of blood to different parts of the body. It helps tone and stimulate muscles which have grown flaccid and weak.

So please do bear in mind that, while yoga is usually talked about regarding it's mental approach, there are clear and proven physical positive aspects which are a part of this approach.

Therefore, if weight loss is your goal, or perhaps the ability to shovel the snow in winter without having your back ache for days, then yoga exercise is as viable an option to you as it is for the stressed-out business executive who needs to find a strategy for dealing with the craziness of business life!

Yoga exercise is for everybody that has a wish to increase well being and longevity. Yoga is made for you!

Yoga: Build Strength with Warrior II

For strengthening the hips and thighs, few poses beat Virabhadrasana II (Warrior Pose II). Hip and thigh strength is useful for many everyday activities, from going up and down stairs to bending over to pick up your grocery bags. Also, strong hips and thighs can contribute much to overall knee health and protection.

Warrior Pose II derives its name from the powerful lunging thrust made with a sword used by ancient Indian soldiers to combat their foes. This lunging motion is great work for the large quadriceps muscles on the front of your thighs.

This pose can do more than just build strength. Many knee problems that arise from misalignment can be corrected with Warrior II. To check your knee alignment, stand in front of a mirror with bare legs. If your kneecaps point straight out over the midline of your feet, this is healthy. However, if kneecap points inward and your thighbone also rotates inward in relation to your shin, this can be problematic. This position can cause undue stress on the knee ligaments and cartilage.

Two actions must be focused on in Warrior II to correct this misalignment. Stretching the hip adductors is the first thing. Do this by lying on your back perpendicular to a wall with your feet on the wall and your knees and feet bent at 90 degrees. Imagine sitting in a chair that has fallen over backward. While opening the knees to the sides, move your feet farther apart so that your shins remain perpendicular to the wall and parallel to the floor. Allow your inner thighs to relax and stretch while you stay in this pose for 5 breaths.

Then, while remaining on your back, create the form of Warrior II by leaving your right foot where it is and extending your left leg out to the side while turning your foot inward as you plant your sole on the wall. Your left arch should line up with your right heel so that a line drawn between them would be parallel to the floor. Stretch your arms out to the side and stay there for 1-2 minutes. Then repeat on the other side.

Another secret for correct alignment of the bent leg in Warrior II is strengthening the external thigh rotators like the gluteus maximus. To build these muscles, stand with your back to the wall with your feet 4 to 41/2 feet apart. Set your right foot out 90 degrees, parallel to the wall and rotate your left foot in a little. Make sure your right hip is touching the wall. Bend your right leg into Warrior II and ensure that your right thigh is parallel to the wall and your right knee points out over the center of your right foot. Then place a rolled-up yoga mat between the wall and your bent knee. Press your knee firmly into the rolled-up mat through your left foot, keeping your left knee straight and your left thighbone pushing back toward the wall.

This work to strengthen your external hip rotators and open your hip adductors will allow you to align your knees and thighs safely in Warrior II. Once you can safely engage in practicing Warrior II you can accomplish much towards strengthening the quadriceps. Practice this pose consciously and slowly. Focus on correct biomechanics. With time and practice you will train your quads and hips to support your knees in an optimal aligned position when bending.

Becoming mindful of this alignment will allow you to be aware of protecting your knees when bending and performing everyday activities. Warrior II will not only provide your yoga practice with a healthy foundation, it will extend this healthiness in your entire life.
