Yoga - An Exercise For the Mind

Many people think yoga is merely a practice of placing the body in uncomfortable, contorted positions for the purpose of creating flexibility in the body. Although it is indeed a form of physical exercise, this ancient practice is more an exercise for the mind. Here are some ways that it can benefit your mind and emotions.

It helps clear the mind. If are worried, have a problem to solve, or have negative thoughts it will help you get clear and release those emotions.

It creates self-confidence. As you progress in a regular practice you will notice improvement in your posture and your self-image. You will be able to do poses that you never thought you could do before. This feeling of confidence will carry over in your everyday life.

It enhances body awareness. A good instructor will tell you to listen to your body while you practice yoga. Good body awareness allows you to be coordinated and to know when you are doing something that will harm your body. Likewise you will know what is good for your body and your health. For example, you may be inspired to start eating healthier.

It makes you focused. If you feel distracted easily you will find that it helps to train the mind to stay present.

It makes you calm. You will learn how to breathe fully which helps to relax the mind and body. The calmness and patience needed to perform a balance pose will give you the skills to handle a stressful situation.

It helps you forget the past. Bad relationships, childhood traumas and embarrassing mistakes are all in the past. Yoga trains the mind to live in the present and let go of anything else that does not serve you.

It increases intuitive abilities. As the mind becomes more clear, focused and calm you are able to make better decisions and choices in life. Your mind will become an open channel to receive new, creative ideas.

You will learn to love yourself. As a method of nurturing the body, mind and spirit, the more you do yoga the more you will see improvements in your mind and body, the more you will see your confidence grow, and the more you will love yourself.
