Epiphany at the Portola

Last month I took a group of students, primarily high-powered businessmen and women, to China and Tibet for a meditation retreat. I was amazed at how much China had changed from the late eighties. Back then almost everyone wore a drab uniform and very few people looked happy. What I remembered most were all the guards carrying machine guns and being watched very carefully wherever I went. Now, in Shanghai and Beijing anyway, I was happy to see thoroughly modern cities. People were wearing bright colors and had happy, hopeful faces. Evidence of prosperity was everywhere. Even the guards at the Great Wall would sit and laugh with us.

Tibet was even more amazing. It is such a beautiful country, with majestic mountains and magical temples filled with brilliant murals and golden beaming Buddha's. We were quite taken aback when at every temple and every statue we would be met by a monk who would inform us of the fee for taking a picture. Ten Yuan for this room, twenty for this Buddha, forty to videotape it. Of course, we were happy to make some donations to help restore the temples and delighted to support the ongoing work at the monasteries. But the gift that was given to us, perhaps by the Prosperity Buddha, was the idea of being open to receive and how money served as a means to help people.

In my early years of meditating as a "yogi in training," I adopted the notion that money was un-spiritual. My mind had created a division between my business life and my spiritual life. As a result I lived in lack because my mind thought it was a more spiritual state to be in. Teaching yoga and meditation in the eighties I would always teach on a donation basis but rarely received enough to pay for the overhead. For years SAI remained a meditation backwater in Orange County. Then, in the early 21st Century, my friend, student and teacher Matthew Ferry, pointed out to me that my lack of prosperity consciousness was keeping my work from being enjoyed by other people. Once I was open to receive, others began to receive more too.

Once my consciousness shifted from lack to value, The Self Awareness Institute grew from a few hundred people to tens of thousands all over the world in just a few years. If the opposite were true, and Yoga teachers contemplated failure, this treasured practice would have died thousands of years ago.

There are many aspects of Yoga that help anyone improve his or her life. Below are five methods that can help any Yoga teacher maintain a path of continued progress and success. Ultimately, Yoga students will benefit under the guidance of a successful teacher.

Self-Image: People are often dependent on the opinions of others. As children, we may have been dependent upon the opinions of our peers, teachers, parents, and family members. This causes some of us to be in a state of searching for praise.

You might think that a Yoga teacher would be beyond searching for praise; yet, praise may come easily from his or her students. Instead of progress, a person might regress, as a result of receiving praise and buying into it. In order to keep self-image in balance, each of us needs to have a realistic viewpoint. It is not an easy line to walk - between being over confident and lacking self-confidence.

Inspiration: This is the life blood of maintaining one's Yoga practice. Inspiration is built on the fuel of motivation for the greater cause of developing the best possible Yoga students and personal practices.

Positive Thought: Every Yoga instructor must constantly have a positive frame of mind. This is not an easy task. Everyone has ups and downs in life. When you teach Yoga classes, you have to stay in a positive frame of mind and have your best "game face" on - even though your own personal circumstances might not be ideal at the time.

Preparation: There is nothing more unprofessional than a Yoga teacher who does not show up for his or her class on time. Each of us has most likely encountered a teacher who is less than attentive to the needs of students. Preparing for a class is all about the needs of the students. This includes punctuality and having a lesson plan, in your head, before you intend to teach a session.

Independence: You would think that a Yoga instructor would be a natural born maverick. In fact, you might think that the average Yoga instructor has a handle on free will and being able to see both sides of an issue. Unfortunately, this is not always the case; but there is a way to enhance independent thinking.

I used to live in New York City and I used to go to some great local yoga classes that were included with my gym membership. I grew to really love yoga. Not only did it help me to achieve a very high level of fitness, it also became something that I really enjoyed doing.

It's a great challenge to try to perfect my pose (and my balance) for each of the yoga poses (and there's every yoga pose I've ever heard of included.) The game keeps track of how balanced I am for each pose which adds a nice bit of interactivity that was missing from the DVDs.

It's definitely been a great thing to be able to do yoga again. Not only am I enjoying it a lot but I'm also seeing great results physically. Kettlebell Training Needs Brain Power Too

Learning proper kettlebell technique, like any other skill, takes a lot more than muscle. Not only must your tendons and ligaments adapt to the new stresses, your brain and nervous system are heavily at work forging new mind-body connections or proprioceptions (body awareness or the sense that indicates whether the body is moving with required effort, where the various body parts are located in relation to each other, and including equilibrium and balance). In learning these new skills, it's important to give yourself (brain, nervous system, skeleton, muscle and soft tissues) sufficient time to develop the required connections so that you don't reinforce bad technique. A typical example of this is our seated posture. For someone who regularly slouches, sitting up straight can feel a bit forced, weird, maybe even uncomfortable. That's the body's proprioceptors telling them that they aren't in their normal alignment. Interestingly, 'normal' in this case is incorrect. Bad posture is a 'learned' state that can be undone by retraining our neurological pathways. Quick and easy - maybe not, but totally do-able. That's why it's important to learn and practice proper technique for kettlebells and all exercises (it's not the squats that hurt your knees, it's the way that you do/did squats that hurt your knees). Our bodies, under stress, revert to training. So by training them well, we protect ourselves from injury when we get tired, distracted or just lose focus.

What does that have to do with mental fatigue? Lots. Learning to use our body as one unit needs tons of brain power to coordinate the tension/relaxation required to execute moves properly. Sometimes, when we just don't get it or can't do it, it's not our muscular system that's failing us, but our brains that recognize the need for additional processing time.

What do you do about it? Understand and respect it. Like other physical arts - such as karate, tae kwon do, dance or yoga - we PRACTICE kettlebell training rather than DO it. Adventure in Darjeeling

Darjeeling, "the Land of the Celestial Thunderbolt", is one of the most beautiful hill stations in India. A major attraction of the Darjeeling in the northern Bengal is the glory of nature at its best at its changing faces in different seasons.

The most attractive way to travel to Darjeeling from Siliguri is by the "Toy Train", officially known as the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR). The narrow gauge train gasps its way up from the railhead at New Jalpaiguri to Darjeeling, 2134 m above sea level. This train is honoured with UNESCO World Heritage Status and is a family adventure traveller' favourite. The Yoga Choeling Monastery in the city has murals of Buddhist deities and beautiful frescoes in the prayer hall.

At North Point in the north west corner of the Darjeeling, you can experience the cable car (it is also India's first passenger rope way) connecting the town to Singla Bazaar.

With your family inside the cable car, you can enjoy those few hour long journey which provides a magnificent view of the mountains and the tea gardens of Darjeeling. The Himalayan Mountaineering Museum at Birch Hill has a fascinating contour model of the Himalayan peaks. This model will surely tempt you to trek the adventurous Himalayas. The Himalayan Zoo located adjacent to it is also famous for its high altitude animals like Siberian tigers, snow leopards and red pandas.

The Tiger Hill offers spectacular views of the mighty Everest and other peaks of the Eastern Himalayan Range as they catch the first rays of the Sun. Photographers who love the nature can take a pre dawn drive to Tiger Hill which takes 45 minutes in a jeep from Darjeeling.

To the west of Tiger Hill lies a lovely mountain lake called "Senchal Lake" which attracts lots of tourists for its picturesque beauty of water and blue sky. If you are fortunate to visit Darjeeling during plucking seasons (from April to November), the Happy Valley Tea Estate, just beyond the town is a pleasant tea garden to spend your vacations, sipping those world class tea.

Darjeeling Tea had such a premium value in the European and US markets that it was soon considered to be one of the finest teas in the world in terms of its aroma and delicacy of taste. We all know that exercise is important for everyone, and diabetics are no exception to that rule. Exercise helps control weight, regulates blood sugar levels, and improves circulation. Regular exercise can also reduce stress, cholesterol, and high blood pressure. If you're ready to begin a new exercise routine, or if you'd like to reevaluate your current level of exercise, there is one question you might want to ask yourself: as a diabetic, what kind of exercise is best for me, aerobic exercise or weight resistance training?

Aerobic exercise, commonly referred to as cardio, raises the heart rate and the breathing rate while working major muscle groups. Cardio burns blood sugar and stored fat, and is recommended by most doctors for their diabetic patients. Dancing, swimming, aerobics, tennis, basketball, and bicycling are all forms of aerobic exercise. Cardio offers all of the benefits mentioned above, and is especially important for diabetics.

Cardio workouts, though, do little to increase muscle mass. To increase your overall fitness, the most effective way to do so is to add weight resistance training to your cardio routine. Using dumbbells or weight resistance machines two to three times a week can lead to a marked improvement in muscle gain and fat loss over the long term. Moreover, when you gain muscle, you increase the number of calories that you burn not only during your workouts, but all day long.

Another form of weight resistance training uses the weight of your own body: bodyweight exercises. Push-ups, crunches, lunges, squats, pull-ups, dips, and other bodyweight exercises require no special equipment and can be done in the privacy of your own home. If you abhor the gym, bodyweight exercises may be the right option for you. Many athletes today, such as gymnasts, martial artists, and wrestlers, use bodyweight exercises to develop a strong overall physique without overdeveloping specific groups of muscles. Even the military uses bodyweight exercises to whip new recruits into shape! Bodyweight exercises also offer the advantage of fewer injuries versus traditional weight resistance training.

If weight resistance training is truly unappealing to you, try to incorporate cardiovascular exercises that are also weight-bearing. These include walking, stair climbing, jogging, elliptical training, and other similar exercises.

To make your exercise routine well-rounded, flexibility exercises are important. Stretching and yoga are excellent ways to increase or maintain flexibility, and are gentle enough for anyone to do. In addition, warming up before exercise and cooling down afterwards help prevent injuries and will allow you to get the most out of your workout. Whatever exercise you choose, be sure to follow these three rules:


Check with your doctor before beginning any new exercise routine.

Monitor your blood sugar level carefully, before, during, and after exercise. Keep snacks available during workouts in case you experience a drop in blood sugar.

If you experience numbness in the feet, check each foot carefully every day for blisters, cuts, or other injuries. Be sure your footwear fits properly and offers as much support as you need. If your shoes become worn, replace them regularly.

Now get on out there and exercise! Whether you choose cardio, weight resistance training, or a combination of the two, all exercise is of benefit to diabetics.

Smart Abdominal Training

Contrary to popular belief ab exercises will not give you a toned tum. Actually, as counter intuitive as it seems, too many ab exercises can make your stomach appear larger. The reason behind this is that abs, trained like any other muscle group, will pack on muscle mass with strength training to fatigue and then rest.

Do not get me wrong, strong and balanced core muscles are a must have and ab exercises are a necessary component of any strength training program. However, the truth is, ab exercises build muscle, and cardiovascular exercises burns fat. Finding the right balance between losing the layer of fat covering abs, and toning the muscles so they show through are what it is all about.

Here are some tips to properly train for a flat, toned midsection:

1. You do not have to train abs everyday

Even though the abdominal is an endurance muscle (meaning, they are used for stamina, not strength or power) they still need 48 hours to rest like any other muscle, to build and repair to promote growth and change.

2. Other exercises adequately train abs

Any exercises that require balance will train your core. This includes dancing, yoga, push ups, squats, lunges, and many sports. Reduce the amount of abs training if you participate in many physical activities.

3. Reduce the amount of weight bearing crunches

Some people do crunches with weights, whether it is on the cable pulley, holding a weight plate or doing side bends. This of course is great, but to minimize the abs from putting on too much muscle, limit these exercises in favour of body weight core exercises such as bridges, planks and traditional crunches and all of the variations.

Use these tips in combination with cardio for a tight tummy and balanced physique.

How to Release Emotional Baggage and Break Through Limiting Beliefs by Using Holosync Once a Day

So many personal development programs promise instant results, effortless changes, and huge personal shifts as a result of using their programs. Our culture, as a whole, tends to value the "quick fix" - even in industries as "evolved" as the spiritual or personal development space. A big part of it is likely linked to an almost instinctual need for instant gratification; it feels so comforting and relieving.

In my experience using various self-help programs, the results often do come but rarely as quickly as promised, and rarely in the form I had originally hoped for. I think a big part of this challenge of trying to change (but having the results come slower than we hope), is due to the fact that many people put all their emphasis on changing the personality rather than evolving their spirit. The irony, of course, is that the changes that do occur on the level of the personality are temporary at best and often unfulfilling.

The changes that occur on the deeper level of spirit, that of our soul, come about more subtly and are often overlooked, yet are everlasting and much more fulfilling. The wisest of personal development "gurus" out there have figured out how to sell us on the level of the personality, yet deliver on the level of the spirit - where the real changes take place. One such example is Bill Harris' Holosync Solution.

Bill Harris, who was featured in the film The Secret, stumbled upon a certain audio technology, several decades ago, that enabled him to synchronize both hemispheres of the brain... automatically. You may be wondering, "What exactly does that accomplish?"

Well, as you know, we have both a left and a right hemisphere in our brain.  In right-handed people, the left side is the logical, analytical, time-oriented thinking part of the brain while the right side is the creative, in-the-now, feeling part of the brain (in left handed people the sides are the opposite). For the vast majority of people, in any given moment, one side is dominant over the other.  In fact, to the degree that one side is dominating the other, we will experience stress, anxiety, anger or any other negative emotions.

In those rarer moments when we are able to achieve left and right hemisphere synchronization, we experience peace, relaxation, clarity and other positive feelings. Traditionally, this type of brain hemisphere synchronization has been available in those moments of "flow" or "being in the zone" in which we focus intently on the task at hand; a task in which our capacity meets our challenge resulting in our full engagement in that activity.

This can be seen in sports, performances, meditation and other similar activities. People usually describe this experience by saying "the personal me disappeared and I was absorbed in the moment" or "I had no thoughts, everything just happened on its own." To even taste this experience once, a person can be inspired to devote their entire life to a sport, career, or practice in the hopes of reconnecting with this state; this source of mind-less-ness.

So when someone like Bill Harris comes along and says that, not only can you access this type of state at will through technology, but that doing so will actually clear out all kinds of mental, emotional, and even physical junk from within, it seems to warrant a deeper look.

The way Holosync technology accomplishes brain hemisphere synchronization is through the use of specific audio tones going through stereo headphones. As a soundtrack plays relaxing music and nature sounds, inaudible tones are simultaneously being played in the background. Each ear receives a tone of a slightly different frequency. The brain, in an effort to balance these two frequencies, synchronizes the left and the right hemispheres.

Whereas, without this technology, a person could only achieve this type of synchronization through intense focus (and years of training). In fact, this technology can instantly entrain the brain to the same degree (or better) than a monk who has spent over 10 years practicing meditation (according to the brain scanning tests they have performed at Centerpointe Research Center).

One of the nice side effects of achieving this hemisphere synchronization is that the brain begins to release a whole flood of good-feeling biochemicals such as endorphins and serotonin, while simultaneously reducing the release of harmful ones like adrenaline and cortisol (which are useful to us only in situations of extreme danger).

Many of us live in a constant state of stress - with all the work we have to do, all the bad news that we are bombarded with, and all the inner personal challenges, it's very easy to get caught in a negative cycle of fight or flight in which our good hormones are depleted and our energy is totally drained. Holosync actually re-trains your body's nervous system to be stronger when faced with the "stresses" of modern life.

The other nice (and powerful) side effect of Holosync is it's ability to go into the depths of our psyche and bring to the surface all the issues and emotions that we have avoided, repressed, or ignored. This is why Bill says that everyone's experience using Holosync will be entirely unique to that person - because what comes to the surface after using it depends on what is within you.

When Bill first discovered this technology, by his own account, he went a little overboard; listening to the audio 6-8 hours a day or more. At first, he was literally "blissed out" all day, high as a kite off his own natural biochemicals...that is, until the next week when all the inner issues came flooding to the surface.  He started getting bad diarrhea, vomiting, feeling on edge, having old memories and emotions arise, and more.

Through this experience, and through the testing of thousands of Holosync users over the next 10 years or so, he was able to create a schedule of how long a person should use each level of Holosync so that this process of personal evolution would be as smooth as possible.  This way, you can enjoy the nice feeling emotions while minimizing the stress from releasing all the inner "junk".

I have to admit, when I first heard about this program, I wasn't that impressed.  I mean, I've heard about this "brain technology" stuff before and have even tried a few out without much in terms of results. I noticed they offered a free demo, so I figured "what the heck, might as well give it a try."

When I finally did try out that demo with the Holosync going behind the sound of relaxing rain  and clanging tibetin singing bowls, man, within 20 minutes I was knocked out of this world and into another state of consciousness. I really felt like this was something to take a deeper look at.  After a couple months of going back and forth on it, (since it's a bit pricey), I finally gave in and bought it back in January of this year.

Within a few weeks of using it, I was so blown away with how deep of a state it kept putting me in, I started my whole family on it. As I began using it, I felt clearer than I have in years.  I would take walks where I would have this sense of deep awareness and a feeling of being "high on life", almost as if I was on a drug.

Also, during this time my dreams became crazy and very intense, as if I was releasing some deep psychological stuff (this actually continues to happen as I keep using it). Of course, within a couple months I did have a few episodes where it felt as though my nervous system was completely fried from the power of this thing.

Holosync actually stresses the nervous system in much the same way that lifting weights stresses the muscles.  After our body is pushed just slightly beyond its limit, it breaks down and then builds up again but stronger.   So each time I reached a new threshold, I felt psychologically stressed, but I knew that my nervous system was rebuilding itself stronger than before.

During those times when I was releasing, I had to take it easy with myself, do less work, and reduce my interaction with others for a few days, then it was back to the normal routine of feeling good for most of the day. So far, I can definitely say that it's contributed to a higher quality of life and it's another one of my tools for empowerment alongside the others mentioned on this site.

The Holosync Solution is actually divided up into over a dozen or so levels, each one taking between 6 months and 2 years, (of listening to it everyday), to complete. I think it will take something like 13 years to finish the whole thing, which actually many people end up doing because they like it so much.

Looking back, the introductory "Awakening Prologue" program is a pretty good value at $179 or so because Bill throws in a bunch of added bonuses during the first 6 months of using it. To start, there is the main program which consists of 2 tracks (called the Dive and Immersion) which total an hour in length.  These two tracks you listen to once a day to bring about all the changes we talked about.

Included with that are 2 bonus tracks, one for creativity and problem solving (called Oasis), and another that will help you focus when you are doing some activity like reading (called Quietude). Then there are a couple other soundtracks, one that using silent affirmations to program your mind for longevity and health (called Super Longevity), and another one that helps you let go of resistance and inner stress (called Making Change Easy, which comes later).

Also included (but sent to you later) is the book Thresholds of the Mind by Bill Harris, which covers the various principles of personal evolution, as well as the concepts of how the ego is constructed (he calls it your internal map of reality) and how Holosync systematically breaks it down through the brain hemisphere synchronization process. Lastly,  he sends (within a month or so) you a full 6 cd copy of one of his retreat seminars in which he fields lots of questions from users of Holosync and also goes more in depth into the 9 principles of growth that he introduced in his book. 

This program, even by itself, is quite useful for understanding the spiritual path since it lays out how to accelerate your progress by training your mind to be more allowing, rather than resisting, of the new changes that come about. Overall, I would say that this is definitely the most powerful and consistent ways to speed up your own personal and spiritual growth since the actual "what to do" work is done for you by the audio technology.  The important part that is up to you is, "how are you going to handle it when you start to change rapidly?"  That is the key where your own willingness and spiritual power comes into play.

Energetically speaking, it feels like this program is altering your brain in such a way that more energy or "chi" starts to flow into you, thereby accelerating the changes that were already happening for you (so whatever you are working on will manifest faster including the challenges that you have to go through).

Bill describes this process as more energy going through your "nadis" or "meridians" which in turn clears out all kinds of "karmic goop", and also that because this process of releasing is stressful (in a good way) to the body, the brain releases all those good feeling biochemicals so that you feel good going through it.

Bottom line is, if you have the money, I would recommend getting it and seeing for yourself how it works for you.   I have been thoroughly impressed with Centerpointe as a company also.

Traditionally, the telephone was first contact with potential Yoga students, but Email has recently become another method of "first contact" for Yoga studios and Yoga teaching services.

No matter how much time and money you spend on advertising, marketing, and public relations, for your Yoga teaching services, you still have to develop a smooth system for answering phone calls and fielding Emails. Let's take a close look at answering the phone.

Every Yoga teaching practice should have a "frequently asked questions," (FAQ's), resource. Your staff will constantly have to answer questions such as:

Am I too old to practice Yoga?

What kind of Yoga do you teach?

What should I wear to a Yoga class?

What should I bring with me to a Yoga session?

There could be 30 routine Yoga FAQ's, which you and your staff constantly field in the course of a month.

You can make life easier on yourself, or your customer service staff, by listing the routine Yoga inquiry questions and answers, or by having anyone who answers the phone, list all of them.

Make sure everyone who answers the phone, knows the answers to routine inquiries. This is also good for your morale, and the morale of your customer service staff, because they will answer questions in the same way.

No one will give a "wrong answer," and your Yoga student prospects will not hang up, while they are kept on hold. Every missed phone call, poor answer, poor customer service, or hang up, is lost revenue, which you paid for in your advertising campaigns.

If you are getting a 1% return on direct mail campaigns, with inconsistent customer service by phone, imagine what it will be if you develop a solid phone answering system. A conservative guess is that you would, at least, double your Yoga student enrollment by developing a strong system for answering Yoga student inquiries.

Let's look at your potential client's first impression of your Yoga teaching service. Is the person who answers the phone trained? Does the person, who answers the phone, understand that the phone is a sales tool?

Does the person who answers your phone know anything about Yoga? Does that person care about bringing the prospect in for a Yoga class? Does a trained person follow up on messages in the voice mail?

If you answered "No" to all of the above, your Yoga teaching practice is in "big jeopardy," unless you own the only Yoga studio for miles around.

Abdominals Training 101

Everyone wants nice abs! I'll start this abdominals training tutorial by reminding readers that perfect abs are achieved with a variety of exercise, not just crunches, and ab work. A mix of cardiovascular training, strength, and flexibility conditioning, with a balanced, clean diet will help you to reach your six pack goals. With that being said, let's talk about abs!

Muscles in the Core and the Exercises that WILL Shape Them

The core or trunk are comprised of different muscle groups:

Rectus Abdominis

This is the six pack, the wall of thick muscle that covers your stomach, and protects your internal organs. Contrary to popular belief, training upper and lower abs, is somewhat of a myth. Even when performing basic crunches, that whole wall (or blanket! Ha Ha.) of muscle contracts, from top to bottom. The upper and lower abs are not separate entities! They work together as a single unit. So in that sense, you are always training your entire six pack. However, there is something to be said about really feeling the work in your lower abs.

Exercises for rectus abdominis:

-Basic crunch

-Hip Raises

-Reverse crunch

-Legs up in the air basic crunch

-Air Bike (Shoulders are lifted off the ground while legs, starting lifted in a right degree angle pedal, like on a bike)

-Most crunch variations we all know and love on machines, stability balls, and foam rollers.

Obliques

These are the side abs. The muscles that run from ribs to hip, and are responsible for twisting movement. They also happen to look very nice when defined! Fortunately, they are very easy to shape because there is less fat stored here than the front of the stomach. The obliques thicken easily, and I don't recommend too many heavy weighted exercises.

Great oblique exercises include:

-Side planks

-Bicycle crunch

-Side bend

-Cross over/side crunches (can be alternated from side to side)

-Side to side hanging knee raises

-Hold a squat and twist from side to side.

Transverse Abdominis

These muscles are deep "stabilizing core muscles." They are located beneath the internal oblique muscle. A strong transverse abdominis is fantastic for pelvic stability, balance, posture, and overall core wellness. They also assist in childbirth.

Exercises for the transverse abdominis include:

-Front plank

-Boat pose (yoga)

-Balance exercises (on Bosu, yoga poses)

-Pilates exercise

Erector Spinea (low back)

The low back is a part of your core and must be balanced with the strength of your abdominals to prevent low back injury, and to balance postural alignment.

Exercises for the low back:

-Alternating low back extension (also called a Superman. On your hands and knees extend opposite arm and leg as far out/back as you can, hold a couple of seconds, and switch sides)

-Machine back extension (A gym machine. Place upper back on weighted apparatus, cross arms, and with a strong low back, bend backward.

-Prone back extension. On a stability ball or equipment for this purpose at the gym, plant your feet, place the front of hips on ball (or equipment), fold arms, bend forward, and straighten back upright.

-Bow Pose (yoga).

Core strength and wellness are very important as injury prevention but as an added bonus, training your core properly, and fully will help you to achieve the whittled, chiseled midsection that dreams are made of!

Aerobic For All Reasons

Regular cardiovascular training can improve overall health in a big way but only if done in right intensity and couples with a good diet. In addition, exercising aerobically more than 1.5 hours per week may be counterproductive, if your goal is to maximize your level of muscle mass.

Your goal dictates how much cardio you should do. For example if your goal is to reduce body fat then 20-40 minutes sessions 3 to 4 times a week. Start slowly if you are just starting training, e. g. three times per week, 20 minutes per session. But if you are trying to gain weight then do very less cardio like 2 sessions of 20 minutes of light intensity to maintain health benefits. For improving cardiovascular fitness three to four sessions of 20-30 minutes should yield good result.

It's also important to change your exercise pattern after you have been on a regimen for a period of time. Alternate between swimming, running, cycling and aerobics if possible. Methods For Teaching Yoga Students How to Cultivate Positive Energy

The most advanced techniques, in Yoga, are based around training the mind. Patanjali mentions eight limbs in the Yoga Sutras. All eight limbs will train the mind, but the last four limbs are especially for balancing and training the mind.

Prathayara (Withdrawal from the Senses): During Yoga practice, we become focused on the tasks at hand. Prathayara is a state of mind that gives us the ability to think inward, and avoid common distractions, which occupy the mind during most of the day.

Dharana (Concentration): This is the ability to focus on a single point or thought and hold our attention there. Some practitioners see this as a mental or spiritual exercise. Dharana can give the practitioner mental and spiritual benefits, by training the mind, and developing spiritual beauty from within.

Dhyana (Meditation): This is the state of internal awareness, which occurs when our attention is focused on one point or thought. To some, Dhyana is a major awakening of the mind, as this method opens the door to contemplation.

Samadhi (Complete Absorption): This is a state of complete bliss and the highest form of meditation. There are different forms of Samadhi, but it is often characterized as the most complete state of internal bliss.

Training your mind is taken for granted, until we see a friend lose his or her sanity. Mental and emotional health should never be taken lightly. Without sanity, one cannot enjoy the fruits of good physical health. Endless negative thoughts can take a toll on our health. Pranayama, meditation, mantra, and asana can help anyone take control of the mind.

The objective is to flood the mind with waves of positive thought, by practicing Yogic methods, which replace negative thinking. Some people default to guilt, doubt, and fear. They wake up each morning to worry about something that may happen. Sometimes, they worry and trouble themselves over events that have gone by.

How can you practice Yogic methods in public - when you may need those most? To mentally practice udgeeth pranayama, mantra, or affirmation is to find peace during the day. You could be in a crowd, and practice udgeeth, in complete silence. Just inhale, and as you exhale, draw out the word "OM" to match the timing of your exhale.

This is just one of many examples of methods, which can be applied to control the mind. Remember that Yoga is with you all day long, and can be practiced anywhere, at any time.

How To Hire Outstanding Yoga Studio Instructors

What makes some businesses thrive, while others just get by? There are many reasons, of course, but there is one that I come across more than just about any other.

People.

Having the right people can supercharge your studio business. Having the wrong people are like trying to drive with a flat tire.

At some point, most yoga studio businesses need to hire help. This may be an independent contractor or an employee. Regardless, you are going to pay money for specific results. For example, if you hire a web site design company to create an online store for you, what do you want? You don't really want a web site, you want to make more money (presumably by selling things online). Always keep the overall goal in mind. If an area of focus arises that is not going to generate more revenue, then let it go. Hiring independent contractors is very similar to hiring employees in many ways, but different in others. Here's the quick summary.

Keys to hiring good people:

Hire people who have experience doing what you need done. There is a saying that goes "Raw intellect is a poor substitute for practical experience." For example, a who never graduated high school will do a far better job fixing you car's engine than a person with a PhD in automotive engineering who can theoretically design an engine. .

Avoid "I don't know, but I learn quickly" people unless you are sure you are prepared to train someone. Better to pay more for someone who will take 25% of the time and do a better job. There is a saying that hold true here "It only costs twice as much to go second class."

Always check references. I've reviewed hundreds of job applicants over the years. It still amazes me how often references don't agree with what they applicant said, or that when pushed for references, the applicant suddenly vanishes. No matter how great someone sounds, ALWAYS check at least 2 references.

Know what you need them to do and put it in writing. Take the time to clearly define for yourself (and for the applicant) what you expect from them. Feeling overwhelmed and just needing someone to help with "whatever needs doing" leads to problems later on. Putting things in writing is critical - it avoids misunderstandings, and also protects against being cheated.

Know if they need to know more than you. If you are hiring for a position where you expect to show the person how to do the job (like filing or data entry), then be prepared to do this. If you are hiring for someone to do something that you don't know how to do, or don't want to teach, then make sure they know it already. For example, if I hire a bookkeeper, I want them to know more about it than I do.

Avoid hiring people who want to be your buddy. You are hiring to get a job done - people who expect social relationships often end up being problematic.

Avoid negative, cynical or critical people. They are like the plague in a business - their negativity will spread to others and can undermine a company. If someone is critical or especially pessimistic in an interview, run, don't walk. You don't want them working for you.

Avoid emotionally needy people. Care for them, befriend them if you like, but don't hire them. Large corporations have employee assistance programs. Small businesses just suffer. Avoid the problem by not making it yours.

Avoid people who have a history of not following through. It will usually be shrouded with excuses, but if you find someone who repeatedly seems to have failed or unfinished projects, move on. You don't need to know the reasons - there is someone else out there for you who somehow did get the job done.

Avoid dishonest people. I always like to ask a question that I know they don't know the answer to, and hope they say "I'm sorry, but I just don't know..." If they try to fudge their way through it, they will do that on the job. It's no fun finding out halfway through a project that the person really doesn't have a clue what they are doing, but misled you into thinking they did.

Just for independent contractors hired for a specific job:

If at all possible, hire someone who will give you a bid/quote for the whole job. Avoid people who want to get paid hourly. An experienced contractor knows how much to charge, an inexperienced one figures it out on your nickel. For example, if you hire someone to create a web site for you, an experienced web designer can easily quote you a price. If someone asks to be paid hourly, they probably don't know how long it will take them because they've never done one like it before.

Avoid paying more than 50% up front (unless you have high confidence in the contractor based on past business with them). If it's a large amount, pay in stages, based on phases of project completion. Only pay the balance when the job is complete.

Avoid people or companies with cash-flow problems. You don't want them asking for more money or going out of business before they finish your job.

Beginner's Guide to Tibetan Yogis and Lucid Dreaming

You may be surprised to learn that according to some schools of Tibetan Buddhism, perceived reality is considered to be unreal. Dzogchen, or "Great Perfection", is a central teaching in some Tibetan Buddhist sects. It's considered to be the highest and most definitive path to enlightenment. But even more amazing, not only is reality unreal but that there is essentially no difference between reality and dreams! Because of this, certain Tibetan Yogis practice conscious dreaming, or lucid dreaming to achieve a better understanding of this concept.

Dzogchen and Reality

Because perceived reality is unreal in Dzogchen, everything perceived during your life through your senses including sight, sound, smells, taste and touch are considered a dream or dream-like. A careful examination of your life and your nightly dreams shows they are very similar and thus there is no difference between them. We experience our waking life as more concrete while the dreaming life is more detached. But according to Dzogchen once you realize there is no difference and life is only a big dream then you can liberate yourself from emotions, attachments and the ego and finally and truly become enlightened.

Tibetan Yogis and Lucid Dreaming

One path to this enlightenment is to realize in your dreams that you're dreaming. The Tibetan Yogis trained themselves to dream consciously with the ultimate goal to awake from the dream we call reality. Different yoga practices are possible while dreaming. This allows the yogi to better understand the dream-like nature of daily life and reality. This allows them to diminish their attachments in waking life. If you understand that your waking life and dream life are the same then you lose your sense of attachment for physical objects and concerns.

Tibetan Dream Yoga

Tibetan dream yoga comprises three parts; daytime practice, morning wakeup practice, and nighttime practice. During the day you contemplate the body as illusory and unreal. Your mind and mental activities are considered the same. You regard the world and everything in it as dreamlike and unreal. Wakeup practice includes breathing out with the "ah" sound by sitting up in bed, head raised, and emphasizing the exhalation. You then stand up, reaching towards the sky with the same "ah" exhalation. At night, you remind yourself to awaken within your dream. You sleep in the "sleeping Buddha" position of lying on one side, legs together and slightly bent and resting your head on your open hand then visualize the letter "A" on the surface of the moon.

As you can see, certain groups of Tibetan dream yogis practice lucid dreaming through Dzogchen to show the ultimate unreality of nature and its similarity to dreaming. You don't need to become a yogi or Buddhist to learn to lucid dream. There are many different lucid dreaming techniques and the basics are quite simple and easy to learn. As long as you have the time and patience to practice a few simple techniques, there's no need to convert to Buddhism just quite yet!

Beginner Bodybuilding Wake-Up Call #2: Rest, Relax, Recover...and GROW!

Contrary to what most beginner bodybuilders believe, your muscles don't grow while you're ripping them apart in the gym. The muscle fibers you've spent so much time pulverizing on the bench only get bigger when you've given them time to recover and grow in anticipation for the next "attack".

Don't get caught up in trying out some of the complicated exercises you see as filler in some of the muscle mags. Standing on your head while balancing a dumbbell with one hand and a yoga instructor with the other while whistling the them to Rocky isn't some ancient secret for massive muscle growth.

Beginner bodybuilders should stick with basic compound exercises (exercises that use more than one joint movement) to build the most muscle in the least amount of time.

Here are a few to get you started:

There are variations on all of these exercises so feel free to experiment with them as you gain experience. Just be careful not to get too carried away in your beginner bodybuilding workout at first. The Link Between Yoga, Mindfulness, and Weight Loss (Part 1)

Across the Globe, nutritional and fitness experts are baffled at the results of a study, conducted by researchers at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle. Dr. Alan R. Kristal, the lead researcher of this study, remarked, "I was very surprised with the results. Considering that people gain about a pound a year during this time, this is pretty substantial."

Shortly afterward, from nutritional and fitness experts in New England, the first question I heard right away was, "How can Yoga burn that many calories?" Soon to be followed by comments from many fitness experts, across the United States, were remarks like, "Most Yoga students don't practice vigorous styles of Yoga."

While this is debatable, my questions to them were as follows, "How many of you practice Yoga?" Have you ever heard of Kundalini Yoga, Ashtanga Yoga, Vinyasa Yoga, Hot Yoga, Power Yoga, Bikram Yoga, and more vigorous Hatha Yoga styles?

To make a small comparison, I can't really comment on the game of Cricket, just because I am familiar with baseball. I can appreciate the similarity and skill, but never had the experience of playing the game. Also, just like Yoga, Cricket requires time, practice, and patience, in order to acquire skill.

Now, instead of jumping to conclusions about Yoga from the sidelines, my first suggestion is to join a Yoga class. This would allow the top nutrition and fitness experts to experience the many benefits that Yoga has to offer.

However, this will not be the case with all the experts. The lack of male presence in a typical American Yoga class is visibly apparent and worthy of a study in male insecurity. This is a subject that I promise to address in a future article, but let's get back to the point.

So, female fitness, nutrition, and medical experts will confirm what most of them already know. Yoga is a complete health maintenance system and has been for around 5,000 years.

When a Yoga student becomes serious about practicing on a regular basis, this is a lifestyle change. Burning over 200 calories per hour in a gentle or Restorative Yoga class is not the foundation of weight control. Most Yoga students engage in some form of cross training.

Many of them walk, take other fitness classes, and are conscious of what they eat. Being mindful of what you eat is a point that the masses have lost. Eating nutritionally dense food, in moderation, and being mindful at the dinner table is a recipe for a lifetime of weight control.
