Yoga - Different Strokes for Different Folks

Yoga is for everyone! However, there is a big difference between what your yoga practice should be when you are 20, 30, 50 or 70 and more. The practice should change as the body changes and provide what we need in order to enhance our life's experiences.

In Yoga Rahasy of Nathamuni, we are urged to consider the individual's stage in life while practicing yoga. When one is young, the body is in the growth stage. More rigorous forms of yoga are appropriate - like vinyasa, ashtanga, power yoga, etc. With proper breathing rigorous practice helps the young body grow and develop with good physical health and mental stability. Building strength and challenging one's limits are an essential part of yoga for the young. As hormones are changing emotions and behavior, confusion become part of everyday life for a young person. Anxiety, self-confidence, authenticity are all issues that a balanced, challenging and grounding yoga practice can address at this stage of life.

In addition, young individuals are involved in varieties of sports, often competitively. Athletes can benefit from yoga as a cross training tool, as a practice to develop focus and concentration, and as a practice to prevent and take care of existing injuries.

During midlife, when the body is neither growing, nor decaying, the yoga practice takes more of a therapeutic, stress reduction and relaxation approach. More precision, good yogic breathing, meditations, chanting, etc become necessary. In midlife, the main requirement is to stay healthy so one can meet the demands of daily living and the responsibilities of having a job and a family. This is the stage when one has to achieve results - personally, and professionally. The pressure builds mentally and physically. Stress is constantly present as people multitask, juggling family and friends with work deadlines, financial stability and providing security. Headaches, chronic tightness in the shoulders, neck, and back, injuries from caring children or lifting heavy objects improperly, sitting for prolong periods of time in front of a computer or an office desk, occupational hazards, overuse of the body...etc become a fact of life. One must remain fit enough to ward off stagnation, weight gain, heart disease, arthritis, etc, and yet have enough time for everything else that demands attention. Therefore, one's yoga practice should be less "achievement" oriented, and more of an opportunity to reconnect with one's self, realign the body, correct the posture, deepen the breath to relax the nervous system, take care of injuries, and restore calm. The practice should cultivate more mindfulness as life's demands are met easier with more positive attitude, less judgment and tons of compassion towards one's self and others.

As one ages, the body begins to decay - metabolism changes, bone density changes, disease, discomfort and pain seem to visit more often. In this stage yoga practice should be directed toward maintaining mobility and balance more than anything else. Also, as death approaches, one must begin to prepare for the event, so the yoga practice should include more meditation, along with study and reflection on one's life and spiritual teachings. Some specific benefits yoga provides for the elderly body include: reduced blood pressure and maintaining a healthy heart function; maintaining good range of motion, maintaining strength and balance enabling the body to prevent falls and injuries; keeping the spine in proper alignment reducing the need for chiropractic adjustments and considerably lessening chronic back aches and pains; improved circulation to the feet and hands; improved digestion and metabolism; improved breathing which helps with conditions like asthma; improved sleep at night, and much more.

Ultimately, in any stage of life we can benefit from peace of mind, alertness, equanimity, compassion and positive attitude. Yoga is an excellent practice to undertake at any stage of life and by people enjoying any kind of life style. Whatever our life's circumstances, when doing yoga, we do better, have more fun and appreciate what we have a lot more. Finding a class that meets your needs and requirements, with a teacher that you resonate with, will help you appreciate yoga, your body and being, and be more consistent in you practice. The practice is only helpful if it is a regular part of one's life.

Exercise On Your Own With Yoga And Weights - Top 5 Tips How It Can Be Done

If you are the kind of person like me who has no yoga instructors where you live then it can be challenging. Especially if you love yoga like me, here are five great ways to overcome this whilst enjoying yourself in the process.

Do not rush

We can never get it right first time every time; take your time to fully understand how you are meant to conduct each exercise. The good thing is that yoga is what they call an intuitive exercise. Ninety percent of the time you can 'feel it' when you are doing an exercise correctly. You can feel the muscle groups working in unison and comprehend how each exercise is there to challenge you.

Start your warm-up

If you went to a yoga class practicing yoga with weights they would never neglect this important step. Often though if you exercise at home a lot of people tend to skip this parts they wish to jump right in. please ensure you warm-up 10-15 minutes before your training session.

Practice yoga without weights at first

It can be very difficult to master a lot of yoga forms as it is especially with weights thrown into the equation. After you are comfortable with the yoga exercises and have built up sufficiently start to strap on ankle weights and use the hand weights.

Use a mirror for your exercise

At first when you start an exercise watch yourself in the mirror. Do not be embarrassed, by doing this you are making sure you are practicing the right form for the exercise so you are not leaving yourself open to injury or wrong posture. You may have seen people at the gym lifting weights in the mirror, they do this so they are practicing the right form (well some may just be looking at themselves to be fair), this is crucial in weight training and yoga. Do this the first few times you are practicing a new routine. Even with the many DIY yoga DVDs they are often good but you are too intent on watching it and concentrating on the television that quite often your posture and form can go out of the window.

Record your voice

When starting out one of the big problems that I had was that I was doing all the above but I was learning from a yoga fitness manual in the beginning, now there was nothing wrong with the manual and the how to do yoga with weights the problem was that I had to constantly keep referring to the book to ensure I was doing it correctly. Now in a yoga class of course you have someone to do that for you. But the method of recording your voice is really very effective. Record your voice reading the exercises out loud then play back the recording whilst exercising. It gives you the benefit or illusion that you are in yoga and weights class.

Now if you are not comfortable with hearing your voice aloud as I know that a lot of people do not like the sound of their own voice (I don't think I fit that category) then get your partner, relative or friend to do it for you..

For me the above five methods can really make it an enjoyable process practicing yoga with weights at home, and it doesn't cost you anything which in this day and age is a plus.

Yoga For Weight Loss - All You Need to Know

The different types of exercises have different benefits. By doing yoga you work out all the muscles in your body as well as your bones, joints and organs. The exercise brings about relaxation as well. By doing one hour of yoga you can burn some 175 calories per hour. This is not a lot. This is how much you burn during a slow walk. This means that the standard yoga does not bring about sufficient weight loss. However, there are types of exercise and ways in which you can slim down by doing asanas.

The Vinyasa or hot yoga offers a great way to lose weight and to detoxify your body. The asanas do not require vigorous movements. But they are done in a hot room. In turn your heart rate is raised sufficiently and you burn more calories. When you sweat all the toxins from your body are released naturally. Before having such workouts you should definitely consult your physician if you have any heart condition.

You can readily do Ashtanga yoga as well. The exercise is quite vigorous especially compared to the classic asanas. You can really work out your entire body and lose weight effectively with this type of yoga. Another benefit is that the asanas are quite easy to learn. This makes it ideal for beginners. You can readily take a short class and then work out at home. This is what most practitioners do.

The power yoga is a modern type of exercise based on the asanas of the Ashtanga. The workouts are quite active and can really help you lose weight quickly. On the other hand, it involves less meditation so it might not be the right choice for those who want effective stress relief. Also, you have to have some previous training to do this type of yoga.

Benefits of Yoga - New Mixed Martial Arts Training Program Wins

Many "Mixed Martial Arts" (MMA) fighters have the strength and endurance to be formidable opponents, but they struggle with breathing, balance, and flexibility. An excellent training method to solve this problem is yoga. Yoga is not just for a bunch of new age peace lovers it is a proven discipline for anyone with a desire to strengthen the body and mind.

Many MMA facilities across the country have started to incorporate yoga into their training programs. The correlation between yoga and grappling techniques used in Brazilian Jujitsu are remarkably similar. The obvious benefits of yoga are increases in balance and flexibility which enhances speed while it decreases the risk of injury.

There are many other beneficial properties of yoga training. One major quality is enhanced dexterity to formulate submissions in a more fluid and coordinated matter. Through yoga, a fighter can amplify balance and core strength in stabilizer muscles often ignored in standard "Mixed Martial Arts" training programs.

Balance improvement will greatly decrease the chances of slipping. How often have you seen a fight end in minutes due to an unfortunate slip? A perfect example of this is the Kimbo Slice vs. Seth Petruzelli fight. Kimbo's lack of balance gave the fight advantage to his opponent he then lost the fight in eleven seconds.

Another important factor in "Mixed Martial Arts" is breathing control. You can easily observe the best fighters have mastered proper breathing. This enables them to outlast opponents and even persevere through a near submission.

Yoga added to a weekly workout routine provides a change rotation for muscles normally used in strength and condition training. This will rejuvenate any muscles used primarily during the week while still being able to make progress with scheduled training.

There are at least fifty other direct fighting benefits yoga can offer with unique training routines for any fighter. If you are really serious about winning, use this brand new fight training technique for a new yoga edge in the ring. seyoga.net/Seyoga-blog-blue.html Natural Health Techniques.

Fitness For Trail Riding and Horse Camping

Fitness is defined as being balanced in strength training and aerobics.

Muscle Tone

Horse back riding uses muscles in a way that is hard to replicate unless you are riding! It can be a challenge to target the exact muscle usage. Cross training brings good results! Muscle tone addresses core work, upper body, and lower body strength training. I use a Total Gym machine, but have regularly thrown in some yoga and Pilates. The convenience of having a home machine has paid off for me. I live about ten miles out of town, so this is perfect! If your routine dictates a gym membership, you can have a built in support group along with it! I have an ongoing support group with fellow riders and folks at work. This is invaluable to stay on track and avoid backsliding!

Aerobics

As much as I feel like I am getting a workout riding, I do have to supplement with aerobics and strength training. Horseback riding is my motivation! I like to keep my routine as simple as possible, working it into my daily routine in a way that makes sense. For aerobics, I take my dog out for off leash walks. I power walk for 30-45 minutes. Cramer is a German Shepherd mix. I choose to leave him at home for trail rides. I consider him my exercise machine. So I need to keep my motivation up to get him out.

I am not perfect, nor a fanatic. I am trimming up after not paying attention this year, and getting a late start on my riding. Cutting out junk food, eliminating sugar, walks with the dog, and sessions on my Total Gym will do the trick for me. Now, no backsliding!

We should all strive to be as fit as we see fit, and be as good a rider as we can be, for the good of our best trail buddy, our horse!

Yoga - How to Trust Yourself When You Don't Know How to Trust

You've already considered the important components of a good teacher. You've chosen someone who is a gentle, open, considerate, aware, well-trained person. You've found a studio or location that is clean and comfortable. If you don't trust your teacher, whether in a class setting or on a DVD, don't continue. There are many, many thoroughly trained, certified and likable teachers.

So, why do you have trouble growing within your practice? First, it is important to accept and acknowledge that some days you are stronger, more flexible, more centered and more open than other days. Life affects our bodies just as it does our minds and hearts. Remember, yoga is a journey.

Perhaps, the most important trust has to be in your self. You must trust your instincts and your technique. If the teacher is leading you through a series of vinyasas that cause even a twinge of pain, make an adjustment. If you don't know what that would be, ask, right then and there. The teacher has demonstrated the pose or you know it already, so if it isn't working for you and you need help, don't be shy. You'll learn something new, and you'll save yourself from injury. If you already have an injury don't ignore it.

It may be as simple as using a block, blanket, pillow or strap. That's why they are there, to help you achieve a safe and useful practice. It is not a sign of weakness. It is a sign of awareness. Your muscles may be powerful, but a joint only has so much give, then it needs help. If your knees are a little creaky, fold the mat over beneath them. Sit on a blanket if your back is tight. Straps provide safe stretch support. A bolster can be the best pillow at the best time your body ever enjoyed.

From one student of yoga to another, give it a try.

Healthy Vacations

When it comes to health and wellness, even those of us dedicated to eating and living well can sometimes through caution to the wind when it comes to traveling. Airports are notorious for offering a slew of unhealthy options and plane food is hardly going to win any healthy living awards. So even from the start of the vacation, we can let go of our diet regimes and start living large on pizza, fries and the like. And while indulging once in a while is okay, if you begin your vacation with this kind of binge you are likely to continue on when you arrive at your destination.

Vacations are of course meant to be relaxing. We go away to get away from our everyday routines and this often includes our strictly regulated or rigid diet and exercise regimes. It's nice to let go once and a while and when we go away we often look forward to lounging on the beach drinking margaritas. The problem of course is that these margaritas and fancy restaurant meals can pack on unwanted pounds. Matched with very little in the way of exercise, you can return perhaps relaxed but also a little bigger around the belly.

In general there is nothing wrong with a few extra pounds that will come off once you're back to your old regime. Perhaps this is what vacationing is all about: letting go and letting loose. There are however other types of vacations that can be just as relaxing without also being waist and thigh enhancing. New types of travel and vacations are now available for those looking to stay in shape and even to boost their fitness levels. Below are just some of the types you can try if you are looking for a get a way without the extra poundage.

Yoga retreats: Yoga retreats are becoming increasingly popular in recent years. Previously only for the true yoga adepts, yoga retreats now cater to a wide variety and levels of practitioners. Try taking a holiday in a beautiful ecologically rich island in the Caribbean or in the Mediterranean while also increasing your strength, fitness and peace. This can be just the thing if you enjoy yoga and would also like to go someone where you'll be guided through yoga classes every day and fed healthy nutritious rich foods. Yoga retreats often include classes in the mornings and evenings and then free time throughout the day or access to meditation groups should you chose to take them. Some retreats have group excursions as well and free time to laze about with your yoga fit body in the sun.

Most often these retreats are located in a peaceful and heavenly atmosphere. It is no doubt true that inner peace can be more easily attained when surrounded by such natural beauty. The peaceful atmosphere will help you let go of your stress and worries from city life (if that's where you live) and let you sink into an important new level of awareness. This is of course only if inner peace and quiet is what you're looking for. Yoga retreats may not be for everyone. There are nevertheless other options for keeping your body fit without having to endure quiet meditation.

If you are looking for a healthy vacation, but are not interested in doing hundreds of downward dogs to achieve it, you may instead want to try an adventure vacation. Adventure travel encompasses a range of activities. These may include travelling across the Netherlands on bike or whitewater rafting through beautiful British Columbia. There is something for everyone. What adventure vacations and travel refers to though is that you and your body will be challenged in some way beyond raising your hand to the bartender for another glass of wine.

Bike trips are a fairly popular way to go for not only are they great for getting or staying in shape and for seeing the beautiful countryside close up, but they are also an ecologically friendly way to travel (assuming you're offsetting any carbon emissions from your eight hour flight). Biking even across a closer destination might introduce you to sights you've never seen before.

The best thing about a biking vacation however is that once you've got the right gear this is a highly affordable way to travel. No car rentals or expensive train rides. Just you and your own force taking you across the landscape. If you're looking for something challenging but not overly exhausting or if you like to be able to take it at your own pace, then choosing a bike vacation is a great idea.

Of course, some people won't be satisfied until they've pushed their bodies to the limits. If you are looking for a really extreme challenge then there are other types of adventure vacations for you. Some of these are more like a triathlon then anything resembling traditional notions of vacations. Some adventure travels include hiking, biking, rafting, snorkeling, zip-lining and kayaking through your chosen destination.

These more jam-packed and challenging traveling adventures are most often conducted through an adventure travel company many of which can be found online. Here you'll find a wide array of group activities that are led by an adventure expert who has experience with such travel tours. Make sure to shop around and check to see that the leader has led these kinds of tours before. You don't want to get stuck with someone inexperienced who may or may not be qualified to lead your group of adventure novices through the Amazonian jungle! Check for recommendations or for reviews of companies before signing up for an adventure tour.

If you're in the mood for a little less in the way of exercise but you'd still like to shed a few pounds, there are also other kinds of retreats that focus on diet rather than exercise. Although some of these used to be referred to as fat farms where celebrities would go to drink water and seaweed concoctions and come out emaciated, there are other ways to vacation in this way.

You may for instance want to try out a raw food retreat. As the raw food movement grows, there are now a variety of retreats. These are sometimes combined with spa options making this retreat even more appealing. Here you'll be offered a slew of raw food meals (and at some places a small array of cooked vegetarian meals) to help introduce you to the raw food lifestyle. Some retreats of this kind will focus on showing you how to 'cook' raw food meals and prepare these options for yourself and your family. The benefits of raw food have been expounded by many experts and researchers have found that even those suffering from diabetes have been able to lower and in many cases completely get off their insulin once on a raw food diet. Of course this should only be attempted under proper medical supervision.

Whatever kind of vacation you are looking into booking be sure to keep in mind these healthier options. While you don't have to go skydiving or kayaking through rough waters, you might opt for a simple bike tour or relaxing yoga retreat as a way to keep your waistline in tact over the course of your holiday. Not all vacations have to involve a wrinkle inducing tan and an extra ten around the waist. Who knows, you may even come back more refreshed then you would have otherwise.

Cross-Training & Bodyweight Exercises - The FASTEST Way To Fit And Healthy

Bodyweight exercises are the fastest and most efficient way to reach multiple fitness goals: building aerobic capacity, stretching muscles, building strength, and increasing a set of skills. Cross-training with multiple bodyweight exercises achieves all these goals and prevents your body from establishing a "comfort level" and frustrate your gains. Using cross-training forces your body to confront and adapt to new and changing situations, which is the best way to keep your exercise gains advancing.

Bodyweight exercises are exactly what they sound like: exercises that rely on your body weight alone - no weights and no machines that provide resistance. The most common are pushups, situps, and squats. Other examples are pullups, swinging exercises, dips, and bending or twisting exercises. There are hundreds of variations of these basic exercises. Combining these exercises into an intelligent progression of increased resistance, use of varying body parts and muscles, and mixed stretching and resistance, will provide for the fastest and most efficient method of achieving fitness and weight loss.

Bodyweight exercises are stressful on the body (which is how your body achieves growth) without damaging to the body. There is virtually no risk of pulling a muscle doing pushups, as there is with bench presses or flyes. Squats and the many variations work the thighs, buttocks, and lower back, as well as lungs and calves, without running the danger of blowing out a knee or wrenching your back, as there would be with weighted squats or leg extensions or curls.

The range of movement of these exercises also stretch the muscles, without needing to take time in addition to your exercise routine to specifically stretch. The exercises themselves also act as their own warmups. So, for example, if your routine consists of squats, followed by pushups, situps, trunk twisting exercises, and karate kata, there is no need to engage in 15 minutes of warmups or stretching, because the squats will warm you up and the pushups and twisting exercises will stretch most of the muscles you are going to use.

The human body is the most amazing machine ever created. One fascinating capacity of the body is its ability to unconsciously adapt to stress (stress as in "forcing the body to work outside of its comfort zone," not stress as in "Yes, dear, I'll get right on it."). Your body will - without your conscious thought, and indeed, usually in opposition to your desires - rearrange its internal nervous connections and muscle firings to use more or alternate muscles, to relieve the stress your workout is putting on the targetted muscles.

By constantly changing your workout routine, you control and prevent your body from adapting, which allows for constant and steady growth in your workouts. For example, my workout consists of several days of karate kata (formalized series of movements that practice the basic tools of karate), alternating with a day of calisthenics (squats, pushups, mountain climbers, etc.), and a day of an aerobic routine. Switching among these programs keeps the muscles off-guard but always ready, and also forces my mind to focus on the routine, so that the workout doesn't become routine.

Your primary task is to learn several routines that you can switch and change around. By picking the routines you feel most comfortable with, and that give you the best and most visible results, you can constantly make progress, become fitter, and lose or maintain your target weight. You may have to try several routines, or even develop your own, so this is not a "lose 20 pounds by Monday!!" situation. But once you develop and use these routines, you will find those 20 pounds go away and stay away, while your attitude, flexibility (physical and mental), and ability to handle stress explode.

Body Listening

One drop in the ocean is a pearl. The body drops us little messages and by listening to these we have a path to wisdom. As one awakens to noticing, a greater freedom is experienced, decisions, dilemmas become easier and a greater understanding comes. We talk of a 'gut reaction' or intuition, quite liberally but what is this about? If we look deeper, peel back the layers of the onion we begin to see far more. We are not taught to do this and in a busy world with preoccupied lives we are missing out on a way to happiness, good health and a stress-free life.

From being an overworked professional and former M.E. sufferer I have had to learn the hard way, but now I know the benefits of being in tune with my body and have greater powers of observation and have learnt ways to overcome challenges.

As a yoga practitioner and teacher, I know from years of experience how my body responds and became fascinated with how energy works. Being still in a quiet place has been my main classroom for experiential learning.

How complex we are as humans and our sensitivity is picked up from beyond the body and impacts on it without us knowing. Noisy hectic environments have become commonplace and many no longer know peace, the tranquility of the countryside and have lost connection with themselves. We are adaptable and the human form is used to operating in changing circumstances but may suffer in the long run if there is overload. Why not be preventative, in your approach to looking after yourself? People go to the gym, swim, walk, practice Yoga, Pilates and Tai Chi to name but a few methods of keeping fit without necessarily being competitive.

What do I mean by 'listening to the body? It is a term we have all heard and possibly pay lip service to. My methods have been devised from others, borrowed, pieced together in new ways or just appeared out of the ether. All I know is that I feel more empowered, calmer, confident about my body and my health.

The breath is the start. Logical you may say and what is new in that? How we breathe, where the breath comes into and leaves the body, what happens to it whilst in the body and the pace of breathing are all part of this. Energy is our source of sustenance and renewal. We take it for granted but if we observe more closely we will be aware of changes. The changes will show up in the body but it's more than this. Our consciousness is important and how we control and develop this. Brains are amazing but sometimes they can override the obvious, the truth of what needs to happen and what wants to be.

Meditation has been practised by countless numbers of people for years and has its benefits in bringing a sense of calm. Meditation may simply mean pausing with an inactive mind for a few minutes. It does not need to be a lengthy period of time sitting still cross-legged on the floor. Working with energy in a different way brings other knowledge and peace too.

First one has to train, discipline oneself to find that place and time to practice and with a willingness to be open and enjoy. It may not come naturally to all but the benefits are amazing once learned, experienced and understood.

When I was trying to overcome M.E. I had to find ways myself, as the medical profession had no clear answers. They did point me to Yoga and I also was led to become involved in healing. From here I moved on until I became aware of Energy Work and not really understanding or knowing anything about it apart from what I had picked up through a new knowledge of what the body is and is not, I became fascinated and so a new path opened up which was the way to my true knowing and led to an amazing journey to become more in charge of me.

How Yoga and Weight Loss Are Directly Interrelated?

Yoga is a Sanskrit word that means "to join and unite," traces its roots from ancient India and is still practiced not just by Indians but by people all throughout the world. Yoga in India is practiced for spiritual reasons, to achieve spiritual peace. Yoga also involves breathing exercises and meditation and is used to relieve stress which in turn calms the mind and the soul.

Outside India, yoga is used as an exercise through different asanas or commonly known as poses. In Western countries, yoga and weight loss is closely associated with each other. People do yoga exercises to loose weight without straining themselves unlike other weight loss exercises. Aside from weight loss, yoga can improve your posture, flexibility, strengthens your body and makes you feel calm. Different groups of people practice yoga like pregnant women and now even kids. Gwyneth Paltrow and Madonna are just two of the many dedicated Yoga practitioners. This article will show how yoga and weight loss are directly interrelated and losing weight with yoga is truly effective.

Before starting any yoga exercise, you must wear proper clothing and have the basic supplies. You must remove all jewelries when practicing yoga. Wear something comfortable, not too tight nor too loose. No shoes or slippers. The most basic yoga supply that you have to get yourself is a yoga mat. A good yoga mat will prevent you from slipping when changing posture. Some have blocks and straps to assist you for difficult poses.

For beginners, you can practice yoga for 20-30 minutes with a 10 minutes breathing or calming exercise where you just have to lie down and just relax. So, how does yoga make you loose weight?

Yoga requires that you hold each pose for quite a few period of time. Holding a certain posture for some time strengthens your muscles. In the long run of continuous practice, yoga can tone your muscles. With deep breathing, your blood flows well in your arteries. Some poses requires you to carry your own body weight thus giving you lifting exercise.

Actually, there is no concrete scientific explanation on how yoga exercise helps you loose weight. But the popularity of how to lose weight with yoga lies in its practitioners. Experts and fitness trainers found significant fall in their clients' weight after months of training.

There are many Western versions of Yoga such as Power Yoga and Bikhra Yoga. Power yoga is a combination of yoga exercises with aerobics exercise. The goal is to have a cardiovascular and muscle toning routines in one. Bikhra Yoga is commonly called "hot Yoga" where you practice yoga in a heated room. Practitioners will be sweating, thus relieving body tensions, muscle aches and promotes sweating which in turn expels toxins out of our body.

Personalized Yoga Online Helps You Get Fit in the Privacy and Comfort of Your Home

The greatest advantage of taking up yoga online is that you can receive the instruction and guidance of an expert yoga instructor in the comfort and privacy of your own home. There are some services that offer fully-interactive and affordable personalized classes online.

Yoga is an ancient Indian practice that promotes complete health of the mind and body. It is believed that anyone, whether they are young, old, weak, or sick can practice it effectively and achieve overall wellness. According to yogis, who are authentic practitioners of various forms of spiritual traditions, yoga is more effective when tailored to a person's individual lifestyle.

This is one reason why private and personalized yoga lessons are strongly recommended by most yoga experts. Compared to group classes that are commonly held in crowded gyms or studios, one-on-one yoga training lets the instructor determine your body's abilities and restrictions while considering your age, sex, and lifestyle. Personalized instruction also allows him to develop a customized yoga regimen that meets your specific requirements and personal needs.

Taking online yoga classes helps you benefit from individualized training wherever and whenever you want it. There are some web services that offer affordable private classes in traditional yoga online, using HD video conferencing. This live format does not only allow you to see and hear your instructor, but it also allows you to talk to him as he demonstrates and checks your postures in real time. Some web services even have yogis that broadcast straight from India, providing you with a truly authentic yoga experience without the hefty fees imposed by a private instructor.

Rethink Resolutions - The Sequel

The 3rd Monday of January is deemed the most depressing day of the year. Sure, acknowledge the post-holiday let down and the associated weight up. Yeah, any extra money has evaporated and bills keep appearing everyday in the mail. Perhaps work's gotten back into a grind and winter is plain just a grind with bitter cold, blustery winds, driving rain and even multiple snowfalls. But brace against the tide of depression that may be looming, it doesn't have to be a self-fulfilling prophecy! Realize what you can change and what you can't. Decide to react in a more positive way; craft a plan of action to manage your reaction. If the dreary, damp skies have gotten you down brighten up your space-home or work-with some plants or bouquet of flowers. Introduce aromatherapy oils into your day and see how much impact fragrances can have on mood. Add music. The saying "Music soothes the savage beast" reflects the power of music over emotions. There are ways to counter the depression that accompanies the 3rd Monday of January.

So whatever happened to your New Year's resolutions? Know, if they've dissolved, you're not the only one. A basic physics principle: A body a rest tends to stay at rest can be applied to habits as well. Sir Isaac Newton's First Law of Physics highlights how difficult change is to implement; unless acted upon by an outside force things remain status quo. Understand this and create your outside force: Come up with a plan...a realistic plan. A realistic plan includes steps to recognize and recover when you deviate or revert to old ways. Maybe it's as concrete and real as stepping on a scale every morning or maybe a little more subtle in that you're wearing warm-ups more and jeans less. Perhaps you've allowed your latte consumption to creep up to 2 per day rather than 2 per week. If you have a training partner that gets sick, do you go ahead and hit the gym alone or curl up on the couch? Evaluate potential scenarios so you'll be aware of them if and when they happen. And if any happen, that light bulb inside your head should flick on for an "Ah HA!" moment. Your "ah ha" moment shouldn't be one of berating, just accepting what is. Review your long term goals (ie., New Year's resolutions) and why they were set in the first place. Understand the pathway to those goals will be travelled by tacking back and forth until the destination is reached. It's worth repeating: Do not berate yourself. In fact, do the opposite and congratulate yourself on recognizing the situation and getting back on track, support rather than criticize.

Yoga is diametric by nature; the student seeking a balance between extremes. Two concepts: Abhyasa and vairagya and their equilibrium can assist in bringing a healthy mindset for reaching your goals' destination. Abhyasa reflects a determined dedication; vairagya an indifference, a detachment. Another way to view these concepts can be: Charging on at all cost versus throwing in the towel at the first hint of difficulty. Neither of these extremes is desirable OR healthy. Striving for the equilibrium or balance leads to an approach that's manageable and sustainable.

You might feel depressed January 17th but maybe not. Maybe it's the following Monday or the 2nd Wednesday in February. It doesn't matter when it happens. All that matters is what you do. Start off the New Year, reTHINK re SOLUTIONS and reSET, reNEW and say, even aloud, reAFFIRMATIONS as the days go by.

Herbal and Alchemical Support For Yoga, Qigong & Meditation Practice

Each one of us is of course unique in terms of what we need to maintain and enhance our physical, mental, and emotional health. For this reason, it's wonderful and often very necessary to consult individually with a qualified herbalist - a practitioner of Chinese Medicine, Ayurveda, Tibetan Medicine, or western herbalism. This is especially true when we have a specific physical, mental or emotional imbalance that we're seeking to remedy. A healing professional is able to assess our condition, and then create an herbal formula designed specifically for us.

Therapeutic & Vitality-Enhancing Uses of Herbal Formulas

Herbal and alchemical formulas can be powerful allies for transforming an imbalanced, dis-eased bodymind into one that once again is functioning in a balanced and comfortable way. They also can be used to enhance our health: to increase our clarity and vitality, to take us to the next level of joyful and radiant wellbeing. Practitioners of Yoga, Qigong and Meditation often have an interest in using herbs in this way, to support the creation of an increasingly strong and clear bodily "temple," which can then initiate a deepening and expansion of our spiritual practice.

The herbs and alchemical substances used in this way - as physical, mental, emotional and spiritual tonics - frequently have an adaptogenic character. An adaptogenic substance is one that has a normalizing effect upon bodily processes. In other words, it possesses an intelligence that allows it to act in a way that is appropriate to the person consuming it. There are, for instance, herbs that are adaptogenic with respect to immune system function: they can boost a weak immune system, or suppress an overactive immune system - depending on what is needed.

Herbs and alchemical substances which, in this way, "know what to do" can be of great benefit to a wide variety of people. Though it's still preferable to consult individually with an herbalist - if this is an option for you - it's not absolutely necessary, with tonic formulas such as these, since the herbs themselves are able to adjust their actions according to the needs of the person taking them. (How cool is that!)

Medicine Buddha Blessings for Yoga, Qigong & Meditation

In my twenty-five years of Yoga, Qigong and Meditation practice - as well as in the context of being trained to practice Chinese Medicine - I have experimented with a large number of herbal and alchemical tonics, as support for my practice. Of these, the following three are ones I've found to be particularly powerful, and would recommend wholeheartedly to anyone wishing to support, strengthen and deepen their Yoga, Qigong or Meditation practice.

To me, these substances feel like profoundly generous gifts from our friends in the plant and the mineral kingdoms - infused with the blessings of Lu Dongbin (the Daoist Immortal who is also the patron of Inner Alchemy), Saint Germain (the Ascended Master known as a master alchemist) and the Medicine Buddha. So I invite you to read more about them, and - if your intuition says "yes" - to enjoy the potent support they have to offer.

Tonic Gold tonicgold.com tonicgold.com

Created by the hermetic alchemist Petri Murien, Tonic Gold contains the Universal Life-Force in the form of Potable Gold. In other words, it's like a little bottle of spiritual sunshine! In terms of its effect on the subtle body, nothing comes close, in my experience, to Tonic Gold. The very first time I took just a couple of drops in water, there was a pronounced energetic expansion in my solar plexus. Since that time, what I notice most - when I'm taking Tonic Gold regularly - is a flowing warm sensation along the Shushumna Nadi (the core of our subtle/yogic body). My mood tends to shift in the direction of ease and joy, and my body enjoys a new flexibility and spaciousness. Wonderful!

Tonic Gold comes in a small bottle, which will last one to three months, depending upon your dosage. It has an anise/orange flavor, very pleasant, and its proven benefits are many. Petri recommends taking it on an ongoing, though not continuous basis, e.g. take it for six months, then take a month or two off, then take it for another six months, etc. The alchemical tradition within which Tonic Gold is produced is vast and profound - and Petri himself, from what I can tell, is a true adept at this art and science. I encourage you to read more about both alchemy and this particular alchemist, on the Tonic Gold website.

Tonic Alchemy

Tonic Alchemy - formulated by Chinese herbalist Ron Teeguarden (owner of Dragon Herbs) - is a powdered mix of 71 potent ingredients, to be blended with water or juice, and taken daily. The ingredients include Chinese tonic herbs, sprouts and grasses, sea vegetables, fruits, and much more. This formula is designed to increase mental energy, fortify the immune system, detoxify our body, and improve digestion.

One thing that makes Tonic Alchemy stand out among the numerous superfood blends currently on the market, is its "Probiotic-Enzymatic Predigestion Process - an ancient and natural method of bio-fermentation that incorporates beneficial probiotic microorganisms and their enzymes into foods to gently break them down into their most basic elements." It is this process that allows all of the amazing ingredients of Tonic Alchemy to be readily absorbed and utilized most effectively by our bodies.

My experience of taking Tonic Alchemy is, in a word: "ahhh ...." Immediately after taking my daily dose of this sweetly-delicious potion, I feel as though every cell in my body is saying "thank you!" for providing it with so many wonderful nutrients - vitamins, minerals, enzymes it hasn't had access to for who-knows-how-long.

Gold-Ash-Powder gold-ash-powder.com gold-ash-powder.com

U Shein Sayargyi - the creator of Gold-Ash-Powder - is a shaman and healer from Yangon in Myanmar. After beginning his adult life serving in the military, a series of battle-injuries and prophetic dreams initiated a profound change-of-course: a modern-day "hero's journey." The short bio offered on his website reads:

"Suffering from a great personal crisis, he received and developed his extraordinary skills. For a certain period he was mainly working with people releasing their possessions and occupations of other spirits. Later on he also began to heal with medicinal plants and developed a remedy called Gold Ash-Powder. The production [of Gold-Ash-Powder] is a very complex and complicated alchemistic process which takes about 20 years of time. The exact composition and the production process were given to him through visions and dreams by his "Devas." Today he is very well known in most parts of South-East Asia, due to his spectacular healing successes. He is also the founder and director of a healing and training center near Yangon."

I first learned about Gold-Ash-Powder from the lovely film "Voyage Into The Next Dimension: by Clemens Kuby. The film presents several powerful healers, one of whom is Mr. U Shein. Below is the link to the film. The section describing Gold-Ash-Powder begins at the 49-minute mark.

Unless you happen to be one of Mr. U Shein's neighbors, in Yangon, Myanmar (formerly Burma), getting the Gold-Ash-Powder is a bit of a process ... but well worth the effort.

May these precious formulas support you

in manifesting radiant good health

and ever-expanding happiness!
