How to Get Your Prospective Client to Sell Themselves on Your Health and Wellness Services

Getting the prospect to "Open Up" and tell you what their needs, hopes, aspirations are can be achieved easily if you know what to ask, and when to ask it. So weather your selling fitness classes, personal training, meditation, yoga or martial arts. Adapt and use these techniques to suit your business.

I have spoken before about the necessity to get the person who visits your business to fill out a "Pre-assement Questionnaire" or PEQ. This form simply allows you to find out what their reasons are for wanting to achieve whatever your services provide.

Use and adapt any or all of these questions to suit. Naturally give them a chance to respond to the questions without interruption. Listen closely to their answers, and don't "interrogate" by asking too many questions at once.

The "Prechat"

This is your chance to a have a relaxed chat with your prospects to find out what their needs are, to listen and to reassure them that joining your centre, or participating in your classes etc is going to benefit them physically, emotionally and spiritually.

Warming Up, Building Rapport And Showing Empathy:

The Pre-chat is one of the most effective ways to determine your client's goals and needs. What do they really want to achieve, and WHY? Lead them gently to the point where they'll be begging you to sign them up!

Again this script below can be applied to many different situations, read through it and adapt it to your requirements, BUT follow the basic format of the questions!

Initial Greeting when the prospective client walks into your business.

Remember, the person who asks the questions is the person in control

The prospect is inquiring because they feel they need your help and motivation. You are the expert!

Number one rule - laugh, smile, and relax!"

Inquiry example:

Customer asks about the cost of the training:

Your answer, "Sure I can help you with that"

And continue, "So, you'd like to know the times we're open, all the prices, facilities, services and classes available. Is that right?"

(Customer-Yes):

Your answer, "We tailor all of our Training/membership packages based on your individual needs such as how many days you want to exercise, what services and facilities you are looking at using etc. What we normally ask is for you to do quickly fill out this fitness profile, (PEQ) which tells us a little bit about yourself and will save me asking you a lot of questions, I generally say with a smile it save me from sounding like I'm interrogating you.

Hand person the PEQ along with a pen and ask if they would like a drink of water.

Note.

A Few Tips:

o Endeavour to sit down in a relaxed non-intimidating environment with the prospects

o Try to get someone to mind the reception area for you

o Use and remember the person's name

o Ask questions, follow up with questions, don't talk- listen

o "Hi____, my name is.........................

o How long have you been thinking about coming in?

o Why did you decide to come in today?

o What was your motivation for coming in today?

o Why today in particular?

o How long have you been thinking about it?

o Have you been to a gym before?

o Have you been to this gym (substitute your business) before?

o How did you go?

o Did you attend regularly?

o Were you happy with what you achieved?

o Why/Why not?

o What made you stop?

o What did you do - weights, aerobics, yoga, martial arts, yoga etc

o How did you feel when you were exercising?

o Did you have more energy when you were exercising?

o How did that make you feel?

o So what has stopped you from getting here in the past?

o What has made you decide that to-day's the day?

o What are your plans for starting? So this is now or never for you?

o Age of your Prospective client: under age: do they need parent/guardians permission?

o What has made them decide to come in today?

o Is it a change of life, EG are they hitting 30 or 40 and feeling that middle age spread?

o Are they of an age (or in the type of shape) that their Doctor has told them they need to do some exercise, or the outlook for them will not be good?

Location - "I notice you live at......so are we (your center) convenient for you? What time do you think you'll be coming?

Establish at least 2-3 times a week now - "What days would suit you best?" Remind them of any of the benefits of your services such as child minding/free parking/air-conditioning/activities to suit all levels etc. that they may require.

o Solve any issues that may occur later now

o Occupation - Is your job an active one or do you sit down most of the day? (Explain why sitting down all day can make you feel tired and lethargic, especially if it is front of a computer screen)

o Are you feeling lethargic at the end of the day?

o Does your job require fitness?

o Is it stressful?

o Does your job require customer contact?

o Do they need to look good for their job? (And why)

o Find out the real reasons WHY they want to start an exercise or fitness routine

o What have achieved in the past, how long ago was that, did they feel and look good then why.

What were they doing then that was different to what they were doing now.

Let your prospect do most of the talking, quite often they will tell you what are the compelling reasons that they want too get fit, tone up, lose weight.

Remember when THEY tell you it's the truth, their truth!

The more your prospective clients disclose about themselves the closer they are to taking part in your services, now go and have your best week ever!

Where Can You Find Inexpensive Yoga Teacher Training?

These days - it is not hard to find a Yoga teacher certification course, but in this economy, where do you find a fairly priced program? Some on site courses can run over ten thousand dollars. Even a low priced on site program is in the neighborhood of two thousand dollars.

The training could take from five months to two years to complete. You could also travel to India for a reasonably priced on site program, but the cost of traveling is worth factoring into your expenses.

So, where do you turn? Correspondence courses, for college education, have been around for years. Many of them are completely "on the level." It is the same in Yoga teacher education. There are organizations, and teacher trainers, who produce correspondence courses for certification, and continuing education, of existing instructors.

Who would want to consider a distance learning course to become a Yoga instructor? Anyone who has obligations, at home, might consider such a course. Some employers will not grant you permission to take a month out of the year to train for your "dream job."

In the current economy, employers are "holding all of the cards," and they know it. Just mentioning training for another job will not go over well.

Many teachers of Yoga are women, who have children living at home. With that said - who will take care of their children for a month? Training at home, to become a Yoga teacher, is a viable option for anyone who has commitments.

What is the price range of an at-home happinesslifetime.com Yoga teacher training course? Prices vary, but you can find reputable certification courses in the four to five hundred US dollar range.

But most people think that practicing any type of yoga will make them lose weight. This assumption is not correct. The frequency of your practicing such postures also makes the difference.

It is a very vigorous style of yoga. This type of yoga has distinct benefits for the people who are trying to shed some pounds. Ashtanga was developed by some of the most dedicated yogis and is not very easy to master for the beginners. That is why; you should join some professional yoga training classes to learn this technique.

2. Power Yoga:

Power Yoga provides a cardiovascular workout and is extremely popular among the people who want to lose weight through yoga.

3. Hot Yoga

This is a type of vinyasa yoga. It is performed in a room with high temperature. This type of yoga makes us sweat a lot and thus, we lose weight soon.

If you want to reduce your weight, then besides practicing yoga, you should also keep track of your lifestyle and eating. Some Important Yoga Exercises

Ever considered practicing some yoga exercises? Its all too common for people who don't exercise at all to often cite the reason that they are just too busy to get to the gym. What these folks don't realize is that they are placing themselves at risk to various diseases caused by too much stress and a sedentary lifestyle.

It is pretty much an accepted fact now after much research that exercise and physical activity help the body cope with stress and improves a person's overall Health. However, the demands of our daily lives increase very rapidly as we live our lives and our responsibilities increase. Work, spouse, kids, Church, activities, family, it all takes time and it seems for most of us exercise is a low enough priority that it keeps getting pushed lower and lower.

The important thing to remember is that if you aren't living, then you don't have HEALTH! Health should be our # 1 priority because we all want to keep on living! If people are unhealthy, they are less productive and when you are less productive it gets harder and harder to achieve our goals.

Think about this for a minute, how much time do you spend at work? scary when you add up the hours, isn't it! If you are spending more than 10-12 hours at work, are skipping meals, lacking sleep, and do not exercise, there is not much doubt you are feeling stressed out. If you keep this pace up and you don't change a thing, you could develop a chronic disease that will force you to slow down and the consequences to your health could be worse than not working at all.

One of the main principles of yoga is to develop practices for each individual's conditions and place in life. Additionally, you can practice yoga in your office, in your room, maybe even in your car or at the airport waiting for a flight. For the person who claims they are just too busy at work, you could even do Yoga on your break if you really wanted to.

The great thing about yoga exercises is that there are specific postures & breathing techniques for almost all diseases, conditions, allergies, and types of pains. Many exercises are simple and can have a dramatic effect on your symptoms.

The following are some common ailments that Yoga exercises can help to minimize or harness the symptoms and root causes of. Its been proven over and over again that yoga can improve your life and get rid of the following:

Digestive Disorders:

Anger, fear, jealousy, anxiety, tension etc. are emotions that can influence the quality and quantity of secretions in the stomach and intestine, and can also alter the blood flow to the intestines. Many ailments of the digestive system can be traced back to the stress of our busy modern lifestyle.

Back Pain:

Many people experience milt to severe back pain due to stress. For many men it manifests itself as lower back pain. For most women, the pain is experienced in the neck. Most good chiropractors will be able to help you with this pain but one thing they don't tell you is that the stretching and relaxation involved with yoga can reduce symptoms and remove pain as well. If you suffer from back pain occasionally or chronically yoga will change your life.

Anxiety and Depression:

Many of us experience anxiety and/or depression at some point during our lives. left untreated, depression and anxiety can lead to serious diseases that will negatively impact the quality of our lives and those around us. We all need to be very aware of the potential for anxiety and depression and Yoga provides an outstanding treatment as well as an antidote for these negative influences on our lives.

Four Yoga Techniques For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is also known as, "OCD." As many of you know, OCD is often classified an anxiety disorder, in which the person affected is plagued by unwanted, intrusive thoughts. Yoga is designed to help reduce anxiety and stressful thoughts.

It should also be known that, when someone has OCD, visiting a doctor, therapist, or counselor is a step that should be taken. The time spent receiving professional counseling, and a plan of action, will be beneficial to the person, who suffers from OCD, and to their family members.

Below is a Yogic approach to lower the anxiety levels associated with OCD. The results of Yoga practice are a reflection of the time spent practicing. Usually, people take medication once a day, but practice Yoga less often. If one practices Yoga once per day, one can expect to feel positive results.

1. Asana (Yoga posture) practice is an extremely popular form of physical exercise. As Hatha Yoga and its many sub-styles have grown globally, asana practice benefits have become widely known. The type of movement can be adjusted to meet the age and fitness level of the participant.

Younger people can perform flowing movement, which causes the body to stretch and strengthen. Extreme forms of balance and muscle control help purge the body from tension, which can be caused by stress and anxiety. At the same time, Yoga practice can be modified to help a person who is in a wheelchair.

2. Mantra is sometimes forgotten, but let's look at one purpose of mantra. If you close your eyes, close your ears, and make a sound, what are you thinking about? You can only think about the sound. This is an effective method for training the mind.

Mantra and pranayama (Yogic breathing) can be combined for maximum results. Initial suggestions, for working with mantra, are classic pranayama techniques such as: Udgeeth (Omkar japa) and Brahmari (bumble bee breath).

3. Meditation allows an OCD sufferer to train the mind to recognize unwanted, intrusive thoughts. To see the true value of an unwanted thought is to see it as insignificant. The mind processes many insignificant thoughts throughout the average day. Meditation teaches us to focus on reality.

There are many forms of meditation. One of the easiest to learn is breath awareness meditation. New students find it much easier to focus on their breath because it is the first thing they notice when they begin to sit still.

4. Yogic Relaxation techniques, such as: Stage-by stage relaxation, body scanning, relaxation through visualization, and Laughter Yoga are extremely useful for lowering stress levels and controlling anxiety. The choice of which relaxation technique to use is entirely up to the individual.

For example: Although Laughter Yoga may be very effective, some people may feel uncomfortable with it. In this case, it would be best to choose a relaxation technique that suits the personality.

Slowly, More Men Coming Around To Embrace Yoga's Benefits

According to the most recent survey, the vast majority of participants in yoga classes were women (approximately 77 percent), despite the fact that some of the most popular and famous teachers today and many of the originators of the practice are and were men.

So where are the men in the studio?? That is a question that many yoga instructors and studios are trying to answer as they try to reach out to a market that, for all intents and purposes, remains relatively untapped.

There are many possible reasons why men stay away from the yoga studio, but a few reasons seem to stick out more than others.? Many experts and yoga enthusiasts point to the competitive nature in men and the belief that many men don't find yoga challenging enough for the physical goals they wish to accomplish.? Plainly stated, many men don't find yoga "masculine" enough for them (as if a pose like the Side Crane is a piece of cake).

According to a few instructors, quoted in a recent article, men enter the yoga studios and see a room full of women, perhaps hear calming music and notice there's not one piece of heavy metal equipment in the room and conclude that this place is not for them.? And if there is a male instructor, his calm, sensitive demeanor is in sharp contract to the "feel the burn" approach of a personal trainer he may be used to.? One yoga instructor said that men come to the studio looking for a challenge immediately.

Experts point to a number of possible reasons why mainstream men consider yoga a "women's thing", starting with Indra Devi, a female yoga instructor who came to the U.S. in the 1940s and was promoted by cosmetic legend Elizabeth Arden.? Some time after, Richard Hitttleman became a yoga celebrity, but his books and television show only featured female models.? The PBS network presented "Lilias, Yoga and You" in the 1970s and featured instructor Lilias Folan in an afternoon broadcast that seemed perfectly tailored for the stay-at-home mom of that era.? Although more athletic forms of yoga developed later, such as Power Yoga, the deep involvement of woman in the practice solidified the idea of yoga as a woman's exercise in the minds of many men.

Yoga experts also say the need for men to have concrete exercise results may also be a reason why they refrain from yoga.? With weight lifting or weight training, a man may see an increase in muscle mass - a bigger bicep or a bit of definition here or there.? But with yoga, many of the most important changes are internal, mental and emotional benefits that maybe harder to gauge for a person taught to measure success by wins and losses.

As one instructor stated, instead of focusing on quieting his mind or relaxing, men may build even more tension by focusing on performing a pose perfectly (in response to their competitive streak) and not be satisfied until they do, even if it's a move recommended for an advanced student and they're in their first class.? By putting their efforts into perfection, many men completely miss one of the real benefits of the practice.

Finally, several yoga experts and instructors point to men's fear of failure as one of the reasons they shun yoga in such large numbers.? Since most men's idea of exercise consists of lifting weights or calisthenics that require the body to move in such a rigid motion, they often lack the flexibility that yoga demands.? Even beginning male students, the experts say, give up after a few sessions because they fear "failure" at not being able to perform the moves (without realizing that their inflexibility may be the biggest reason they should participate in yoga).

Yoga instructors say it may help to inform many men that some of today's top athletic stars are yoga fans who use the practice to help them perform.? Superstars such as NBA star Shaquille O'Neal, former NFL star Jon Kitna and pitcher Barry Zito, as well as entire teams such as the Los Angeles Lakers and Chicago Cubs, offer yoga to their athletes to counteract the rough treatment they receive on the field.

Men who attend yoga classes must let down their defenses and not think of yoga in terms of success and failure.? The instructors say that yoga is not concerned with perfection of pose or rating someone based on whether they can perform a backbend on their first day in class.? Yoga, they stress, is a gradual process where the student comes to acknowledge the mind-body connection.? When placed in the right perspective with realistic goals, each yoga session can be considered a "success".

Yoga instructors suggest that men who are attending their first yoga session take time to introduce themselves to the teacher and discuss the class structure.? Men should also accept and admit (to the instructor and to themselves) that they harbor some anxiety about the yoga class.? By establishing lines of communication, the student and the instructor can begin to erase the fears they have about not being up to the task of yoga.

Another option yoga instructors may want to consider, the experts say, is occasionally conducting a men's-only yoga session where men can be themselves.? Instructors who have held classes such as this admit that it creates a different atmosphere than usual and that the typical male joking is not uncommon.? But arranging such classes can be a big help in teaching men to relax in the studio and, in turn, relax with the idea of yoga.

Finally, men should be willing to let themselves go mentally in a yoga class.? Some of the most powerful men in business have credited yoga with letting them clear their heads of the day-to-day stresses and mental strain of the workday.? And not only does yoga let them get rid of old, troublesome thoughts, it allows new thoughts to come in.? indeed, many top executives have claimed that some of their most successful ideas have come while meditating during yoga.

It may take a while until more men embrace yoga the way women have.? But by adopting this attitude, men too can begin to understand the benefits of yoga, both mental and physical.

Yoga For School-Age Kids

Not every child is good at sports and it's sometimes difficult to know how to get your children to exercise, when you know they don't enjoy competing. Forcing children into competitive situations can be damaging to their self-confidence and reinforce their dislike of exercise of any kind. When your child isn't getting enough exercise, it can be quite a problem thinking of ways to get them away from the computer or T.V. Well, I want to tell you a little about the benefits of yoga for children and how it can help them to stay physically and mentally active.

Yoga differs from sports, the usual school activities or regular children's play principally because it is a non-competitive activity. There are no winners and losers in yoga and this can make it more appealing to a child who doesn't do very well in ball games and other sporting activities.

Children of school age sometimes feel overwhelmed by the amount of school work they have to do and by the variety of computer games they play, some of which cause over-stimulation and behavioral problems. Yoga is an excellent preparation for studying because it acts of the mind, as well as the body, to produce a calming and relaxing effect.

Yoga classes for children permit them to improve their sense of well-being through physical, mental and emotional balance which helps to develop their sense of spontaneity, creativity and communication.

In a yoga class children learn to understand and respect their body and to move with agility through the co-ordination of slow movements. This exercise strengthens the muscles and trains children into developing a good posture, as well as developing their attention span, concentration and memory. Yoga teaches good breathing habits and is useful in helping children with asthma to know how to control their breathing and anxiety during an attack.

Yoga classes for children differ from adult classes, because the child is in the moment of learning to be part of the world and how to deal with its highs and lows. In a children's class they are taught breathing exercises, physical postures known as Asanas, concentration exercises, visualization and relaxation, using games and stories as the way of teaching and learning.

In this way, whilst the children are enjoying the activities, they are also learning about co-operation, paying attention, body movement and ultimately the pleasure that can be gained from doing the right type of exercise for them.

If you're finding it hard to get your child to exercise, why not try to find a yoga class in your area and help your child to discover the many benefits it can bring?

How to Lose Weight?

For those of us who lead busy lives losing weight can seem difficult to achieve. Health advisors suggest that a sensible way to lose weight is to increase the amount of daily exercise. In their publication, The Step Diet, Hill et al. suggest that over 2000 steps a day will significantly contribute to a reduction in weight. (Hill et al., 2004: 2). This is a useful method as it is doesn't cost anything and can be incorporated into your daily routine. Diet pills and regimes are not advisable as they can precipitate dramatic weight loss, which can cause you more problems - such as skin problems and hair loss. In the worst case scenario they can cause you to gain weight - as any sudden change in the metabolic rate can mean that when you start eating normally again you pile back on the pounds.

If exercise alone is difficult then a balanced regime of exercise and reduced calorie intake - bearing in mind the maxim 'little and often' - is a good way to approach losing weight. It is generally believed that eating three smaller regular meals, with morning and afternoon snacks in between, is the best way to lose weight. Regular eating maintains a balanced sugar level in the blood, preventing hunger and helps us to avoid overeating. This has the effect of speeding up the metabolic rate so your body breaks food down more quickly to turn it into energy. "Ideally, eat something small (even a piece of fruit) every 3 hours (women) or every 5 hours (men)" (Collins, 2005).

Another timeless way to lose weight - and one that will save you money - is to increase your daily intake of water. This is important as dehydration can mean that you don't reap the full benefits of your efforts to lose weight. Enough water is considered to be at least two litres a day (Biggs, 2006). If you don't drink enough then your metabolism will shut down first causing your weight loss to slow right down; your digestion will suffer; and you might experience 'fake hunger' symptoms (Biggs 2006) .

It is important to remember that some people lose weight more easily than others because of their body's ability to burn fat. One of the most effective ways to burn fat is through cardio-vascular exercise which increases the heart rate sufficiently - for example, aerobics or running. This form of exercise is more effective than, say for example, weight lifting or light walking, which are good muscle-toning activities helping to reduce the appearance of fat. However, if you simply don't have time to go to an aerobics class or the space in your own home, then other forms of exercise are still effective. Jon Shepherd, from Ultra-FIT magazine, explains:

"You won't burn so many calories weight training, but the potential effect it will have on your body composition and metabolic rate are significant. Muscle is the most metabolically active part of your body, burning up to three times as many calories as any other tissue type. Weights (and other forms of resistance training, like circuits) promote the development of lean muscle, boosting your fat burning potential" Source: (concept2.co.uk/weightloss/chewing_the_fat.php#2 concept2.co.uk/weightloss/chewing_the_fat.php#2)

Fitness activities and calorie burning

Activity calories/hour

Aerobics high intensity 520

Rowing - slow 400

Weight training 270-450

Swimming for fitness 630

Treadmill running (3.8min/km) 1000

Treadmill running (5.6 min/km) 750

Source: (concept2.co.uk/weightloss/chewing_the_fat.php#2 concept2.co.uk/weightloss/chewing_the_fat.php#2)

The above figures are based on a 65kg individual. If you weighed more then additional calories will be expended, fewer if you weigh less.

The table illustrates the differences in calorie reduction between various activities. It is important to find the right kind of exercise to suit you. For most people, walking is the easiest and most effective form of exercise. Ann Bolger, M.D., a spokeswoman for the American Heart Association (AHA) says, 'exercising is like taking the pennies from under the couch cushions and putting them into your piggybank,' in that every little bit counts.' (Meadows 2003: 18). There are many small ways of increasing the amount of walking in your day. For example, if you have a dog, or someone in your family or a friend has a dog, then try to find the time each day to take it for a brisk half-hour walk. If you're lucky to live a mile or so away from work then get up a bit earlier and walk instead of catching the bus. Even parking a bit further away when you go shopping can make a difference.

So this is all about what to do outside the home. But what about when you come back from a day at work and you want to relax? You can contribute to your efforts to lose weight by the way you cook: using unsaturated vegetable oils, and oils such as corn, olive, or soyabean makes a significant difference to your fat intake. Snacks too can be swapped for healthier, lower fat options such as sesame snaps; Ryvita, or a piece of fruit.

(Meadows 2003: 18). Many of us like to relax with a glass of wine in front of the TV - but there are other more weight-loss-effective ways of relaxation. Try substituting your daily glass of wine (110 calories) or half bottle (250 calories) for a session of meditative yoga. In this way you can reduce calorie intake, and exercise and relax all at the same time, and it doesn't cost you a penny. "Yoga also offers psychological benefits. As Baxter Bell, a graduate of Piedmont Yoga Studio's Advanced Studies Program, says:

Weight gain often brings with it a great deal of harsh self-judgment. Through yoga, we can counteract this by creating a safe, positive environment to reconnect with our bodies and quiet the counterproductive messages that often arise in our minds.

(yogajournal.com yogajournal.com).

If the traditional more-exercise-less-calories method doesn't work then look into alternative ways to lose weight. There are little exercises and tips that can take all of 15 minutes of your day - such as the ancient Chinese system of exercise called Chi Kung. A specific series of movements called the Swimming Dragon is renowned for its effectiveness in helping to lose weight.

Through a series of simple movements, the Swimming Dragon works to stimulate the correct flow of chi, or vital energy, through the meridians (energy pathways) of the body. The exercise massages all the internal organs and helps to normalise hormone secretions. By practising the exercise for 15 minutes once or twice a day, it is claimed that your body will begin to naturally break down unwanted fatty tissue. (Alexander, J, 1996: 31)

Lastly, weight loss is something to be achieved over time: take it a step at a time and don't expect too much. Most importantly, losing weight should be something that fits comfortably into the rest of your life and something that you enjoy.

Yoga - For Better Tomorrow

Yoga is a system of spiritual, mental and physical training that is suitable for people for all ages. It calms the mind, attuning us to the environment and concentration and mental ability are enhanced thus reducing stress and anxiety. Yoga helps fell people more relaxed and calmer as well as making them mentally alert and energetic. Although yoga is a self-form of self help therapy, and you can get the maximum benefit under the guidance of well-experienced teacher. You can find yoga classes in cities and towns all over the world. Very little is need in terms of equipments and the greatest advantage is that you can attain best of the advantage even if the sessions are for small period of time. It is however beneficial if you can manage session of 30 minutes or an hour. It is recommended that session should take place in morning or evening. Do not take a bath before or after practice, have a break of at least 30 minutes.

The word yoga is derived from the Sanskrit for union, and all form of yoga have as their aim the realization of oneness with the universe. Yoga originated in India more than 5000 years ago and played an integral part in the growth of Hinduism, Buddhism and Indian civilization as a whole. Yoga was first introduced to the west in the 19th century when translation of Hindu text began to appear. However it is not until 20th century that yoga began to attract attention among people searching for alternative health.

Yoga purpose is to strengthen the body and make it more flexible as well as awake the spirit. - In effect to provide mental and spirituals system of health. Yoga improves posture, increase the intake of oxygen and enhance the functioning of the respiratory, digestive, endocrine, reproductive and elimination system. It does it through physical poses (asanas) breathing techniques and meditation practice. Yoga has lot of advantages over exercise and other form of sport, fitness technique, as exercise is hard work yoga is gentle because your mind and heart are involved. People off all ages can do yoga, and asanas can be adapted for people with disabilities or special need. Almost every one can do yoga including the elderly, children, pregnant women and those with chronic health problems. However people need to select asana depending upon there ability to perform.

An important aspect of yoga is beliefs in Prana(life force)which is the universal energy that gives structure and form to mater, life and spirit.

An Introduction to the Sarvang Asana in Yoga

Yoga is now recognized as a science and western scholars have reported the beneficial effects of this form of exercise. Yoga has two parts namely the spiritual and the physical. One cannot comment on the spiritual part as that is beyond the understanding of the average man or woman. However the physical properties of the yoga do merit consideration.

Yoga as we know consists of certain poses or asans which are retained by the person performing yoga for a length of time. In this it has a fundamental difference with organized exercises like weight training and free hand exercises. In yoga there are no repetitions and the essence of this form of exercise is retaining a pose for a length of time. Yoga is by itself unique and the poses if done properly are beneficial to a great extant. The clue in any Yogic asana is to retain the pose for some length of time say for 1 to 5 minutes or even more and at the same time to breathe deeply through the nose. The mouth should not be opened.

One of the more important poses is the sarvang asana also called the shoulder stand. The sarvang asana is relatively easier to perform than the shirsh asana (Head stand), but has most of the benefits that comes by way of the head stand. This pose can be tried by you as well after watching a TV program or a DVD. Basically the pose consists of raising the body upwards and supporting it with your hands while the neck acts as a base for the body. The following simple steps need be taken.

a) Take a mat and lay it on the floor

b) Lie down on the mat and breathe deeply

c) Raise your legs up wards to vertical position and at the same time let your hand get under your hips to steady the body

d) Keep the neck on the mat and keep the legs absolutely vertical.

e) Hold the pose for as long as you can without any difficulty being caused to yourself.

f) Slowly lower the body and let your hand lie by your side on completion of this pose.

This yogic pose must not be performed in case you are having any heart problem or any form of blood pressure. Legend has it that the pose is very helpful for all ailments connected with the lungs and strengthens the brain. In particular it makes the spine stronger and more supple. It also is helpful in stomach problems like loss of appetite and gas. The eyes, ears and throat are greatly benefitted by doing this asana.

I recommend that you do this asana for at least one minute to begin with and gradually increase the time to 5 or 6 minutes. After completing the sarvang asana lie down on the mat and rest till you feel normal again.

The sarvang asana is the stepping stone to the shirsha asana and after you have perfected this pose you can go on to advanced pose. Yoga is no longer a mystery science and its physical properties are well documented and beneficial.

The Body and Brain Training Connection - Exercise Your Way to Brain Training

The brain is considered to be the Commander-in-Chief of our body. It monitors and regulates unconscious bodily processes, and coordinates most voluntary movement. It is the site of consciousness, thought and creativity!

Different parts of your brain do different things. Some areas receive messages from sense organs, others control balance and muscle coordination, others handle speech, or emotion, memories, etc. Thus, it is significant that we teach the brain to move our bodies safely and efficiently.

Being aware of our bodies is the starting point. Asking ourselves if we are taking good care of our bodies and being honest in answering it will help us realize if we are doing the right things, or we are abusing our bodies. A healthy body equates to a healthy brain! Let us then listen to our body.

Many of us are not aware of "brain training" and its importance. We are limited to the idea that brain training is just confined to the four corners of the classroom. The good news is, we have the ability to "expand" our brain. There are techniques available for us to try.

Stress envelopes our daily life. When we are under stress, we cannot think clearly and decide wisely. If we are to reduce stress, we will be healthier. The following are great stress-relievers:

o Exercise: yoga, karate, swimming, walking

o Spa Treatments

o Healthy Eating

The need to take care of our bodies is not new to us. However, majority of us still do not even exercise. It is not a matter of understanding its benefits, but more so finding the motivation to start -- and stay -- on a program. This is not difficult, but it requires discipline.

Physical Exercise is a pillar of brain fitness. Exercise gets rid of harmful stress chemicals and it boosts problem-solving, planning, and attention. A protein called BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor)-which builds and nourishes the infrastructure of cell circuitry in the brain-is created when you're physically active. Exercise also increases oxygen flow to the brain, which reduces brain-bound free radicals. Furthermore, exercise acts directly on the molecular machinery of the brain itself; increasing neurons' creation and survival.

Why Brain Training?
The brain needs care just like the body
New scientific research shows that we can improve the health and function of our brains with the right mental workouts. In a study funded by the National Institute of Health, scientists found that memory, reasoning and processing speed can be improved by brain training. Moreover, they found that cognitive improvements persisted for at least five years!

Exploring Yoga Training Today

Yoga training is not only about relaxation and meditation, but also about its application towards effective management of life. The self-control attained through yoga helps in the over-all development of an individual. Very few people know that yoga training comprises of eight steps, with meditation and contemplation at the top. The other six steps of the ladder are being ethical principled, having and trying to live up to your ideals, bodily postures, energy control, impassiveness, concentration and deliberation.

Training, at least in the west, often initially begins with a fundamental course which is followed by an intermediate then advanced training course. Few if any master training programs exist in the west and this level can only be obtained by direct personal supervision by a spiritual master. The motive of any yoga training is mainly to develop the self and eventually reach enlightenment, either in this life or the next. Many people show interest in continued training even when they do not have any intentions of becoming a yoga trainer or teacher, this is mainly because they have already benefited by regular practice of yoga and hence they want to deepen their knowledge and experience by participating in more yoga training programs.

Yoga is a discipline which has been practiced for centuries by the yogis, yoginis and sanyasis of India. There are many and exact references of the best yoga methods to employ in the ancient Sanskrit literature, and it is good to observe that the Sanskrit literature places more emphasizes more on the spiritual aspect of yoga than the physical aspects. However, no yoga teacher can discount the importance of physical exercises or the knowledge of poses of yoga which are considered as essential for the overall development of the individual.

Yoga training in the initial stages, amongst other things, is intended to stimulate the flow of energy to various parts of the body by increasing the blood circulation to all the various organs of the body. Yoga utilizes all the aspects of personal development from postures to mantras and contemplation in a systematic manner to achieve an in-depth knowledge of inner self.

These ancient methods also help move individuals toward achieving perfect harmony and unison between one's body, mind and spirit. Yoga training has the power to take one from using it as a simple holistic body practice to a mystical and the sacred inner trust. The mind is connected to the whole body through energetic power (through the nervous system) and yoga training effectively facilitates learning to work along with these energies, which in turn gives power, balancing the chakra, thus bringing the body temple to the state of perfect health with the mind clear and calm. Going through the various and many yoga training steps results in the awakening of a consciousness which is free to embrace its own spirit, and gives rise to a mind which is peaceful and clear, and to a body which is healthy and strong and creative in all its endeavours.

Intense at Home Workout Plans

Gymnasts, yogis (people who practice yoga), and dancers are some of the leanest and strongest athletes around. These athletes do not do excessive steady state cardio or lift weights in order to develop their incredible physiques.

Instead, they stick to intense bodyweight exercises which force them to move their bodies through a variety of motions and directions. If your goal is build a lean and strong body in the comfort of your own home, then it's time pay closer attention to how these athletes train.

There are two key things that I have noticed: 1) they workout at a high intensity level, and 2) they don't do typical "workouts." Instead, they piece together a series of exercises which flow well together and perform them as circuits or "routines."

So, how can the average person create a bodyweight routine which closely mimics that of a gymnast, dancer, or yogi - but doesn't take up to four hours per day. Well, the key is to perform circuit training workouts.

Circuit training is where you perform two or more exercises back to back with little to no rest in between each set. This kind of training will keep your heart rate up, force your body work harder, and boost your metabolic rate.

Your metabolic rate is a measure of how fast your body can burn calories. The faster your metabolic rate, the more calories you burn. Use unique exercises and organize them into a circuit training workouts, and your on your way to a stronger, leaner body!

But, where do you go to find these unique movements? Well, there's a system of training known as Circular Strength Training (CST), developed by Coach ScottSonnon. CST bodyweight exercises are actually derived from yoga, dance, and gymnastics.

Muscle Building Advice For Him

It seems that the tips of professional gurus in the field of building muscles are failing to induce the young men any more. This becomes evident from the fact, according to several researches; people are shifting more towards the spheres of yoga and free hand exercises than ever before. Well, how far have they been able to get developed muscles through this depends on them. But we do remain skeptical of the entire concept. What do we think is that these hapless people have not got the best tips and that have motivated them to go to other areas of activities.

You, as a young man, should follow the conventional practices for building muscles. These include exercises and also diets. You should follow these proven tips painstakingly provided you have the passion to become strong and effective. Again in the exercises you should select the strength training. Though many have a lot of respect for cardio, strength training is more appreciable for building muscles and there are several exemplars in its support. Never forget that there is the necessity of intensity in training. You shall have to work each set to the last level of exhaustion. This period can be reached if you take care of giving out your best. Are you capable to have a set number of reps of 12? If it's so, you should do this instead of smaller ones.

The reason for this is simple. Your body should be challenged in each and every aspect or else it will never acclimatize by means of losing body fat or building muscle. This is just the beginning and there should be the presence of complete rest. You shall have to prevent the burnout and overtraining from training powerfully. This is possible if you take the absence of a week at a specific time. It can be at the end of every 8 th week in the gym but that should be done systematically. You should not withdraw this after some days otherwise there can be unfortunate effects on your physical structure.

Besides, the time of exercises should be definite and also short. This is necessary. The best will be if it goes for half an hour instead of longer time. Keep in mind that you may be in the gymnasium for long hours. But this indicates that you are not working intensely. How can one draw this conclusion? The only reason is that both of hard and long workouts cannot exist at the same time. You shall have to sacrifice one for the other. Nevertheless you must give preference to hard workouts or building muscles than else. These trainings are strenuous but they will enable you with better productivity.

You should always go through a series of medical examinations to understand your own level of endurance. Once you are sure of your own endurance, it is better to talk with the trainer at the gym.

Try to concentrate on good diets and meals consisting of foods rich in proteins and carbs. You can get those from vegetables, fruits and meats.

Yoga - Meditation and the Brain

New research at major universities shows that meditation has a powerful effect on how we function. The research studies and illustrates the connection between meditation and the brain.

Last year researchers at UCLA took brain scans that showed people who were able to verbalize their negative emotions could calm the brain. This explains in part the powerful connection between meditation and the brain and why meditation has such a powerful emotional benefit. People who meditate sit until they are able to put a name on their negative emotions in order to let them go.

The UCLA psychologists connected 30 people to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machines. MRI machines show which parts of the brain are active--although there is a slight time delay between when the image is taken and when the emotion is felt.

The psychologists asked the test subjects to examine photos of people making emotional expressions. People who were able to name the emotions without reacting were able to calm the activity in their brain. The theory then continued that those who meditated and took time out of their day to name their own emotions and name of emotions of others without acting would be able to calm themselves under duress.

The results showed a striking connection between the importance of meditation and the brain: people who use meditation and other mindfulness techniques (mindfulness techniques are part of Western dialectical behavioral theory practices and Eastern meditation which help people stay present with their emotions and name them without reacting to them).

UCLA psychologists suggest that the findings help explain why meditation and improves psychological mood. Doctors and psychologists also note that those who use meditation to become calmer have better overall health. For example, if you are able to keep your cool during the day in the face of stress your physical health benefits as well. You feel less of a need to use negative drugs like caffeine and nicotine as coping devices. In addition, you are more likely to sleep better and enjoy a greater overall state of well-being.

Similarly, researchers at the University of Wisconsin worked with Tibetan monks to illustrate more positive crossover between meditation and the mind. Psychologists found that practitioners of meditation experience brain activity at a level they had never seen before. The mental practice seem to have a similar effect on the brain in the same way that repeated physical practice for golf or tennis enhances the body's performance. The result was a demonstration that the brain could be trained through meditation in ways people in the Western world have not formally acknowledged.

The University of Wisconsin's research clearly showed that meditation generated more gamma waves in brains of trained monks than in the brains of volunteers who were untrained in meditation. While novices were only able to present a slight increase in brain activity while meditating, some of the monks showed gamma wave activity that was much more intense than had previously been recorded in a healthy person.

Universal Principles of Yoga, Part 1

Yoga and Yogic philosophy is occasionally misunderstood because some people have not been informed of the universal principles that are not threatening to any belief or disbelief. Many people who do not practice Yoga are often surprised to find detailed dietary suggestions contained within their Yoga training. Yoga aids the student toward better health in every possible aspect. So, Yoga requires and in depth explanation.

Let's start with the meaning of Yoga, which literally means "unity" or "union." Your next question might be, "Unity with what?" Yoga does help unify the mind and body, but it also unifies the spirit or soul within you with God. The soul is sometimes known as the "Atman" and can also be referred to as pure or true consciousness. Yoga is not a religion, but it can be practiced in harmony with any religion.

Before we go any further; it should be noted that many students from a variety of religions have practiced Yoga and feel a deeper connection with God as a result of the mind, body, and spirit unification process. Therefore, Yoga is doing no harm to anyone of any religion. Yoga philosophy does not preach a "Better than thou" doctrine. This has been mankind's excuse to wage war, since history was first recorded and even before.

The concept of another person's religion, nationality, ethnic background, race, and gender; being less, have always been convenient reasons for bigotry, slavery, and cruelty. Tolerance of others is not a new idea in Yogic philosophy.

There is no group that has the exclusive rights to Yoga. India is the birth place of Yoga and the people of India have gladly shared their gift with the rest of the world. There is no exclusive group that practices Yoga or teaches Yoga classes. Yoga was not designed to be an exclusive practice and Yoga has evolved for the best over 5,000 years to this day.

For the sake of being "politically correct," many Yoga teachers omit the spiritual aspect of Yoga in their Hatha Yoga classes. This is fine, since the masses of some cultures object to learning about a method to connect to God. However, what does it say about a culture that is to busy to talk or think about God?

It means many things and some societies are showing signs of systematic spiritual illness. However, if you teach Hatha Yoga under these circumstances, you might be best to leave religion outside your classes. Unless, you are teaching Bhakti Yoga or something similar such as Jewish, Moslem, or Christian Yoga, the union of mind, body, and spirit does not usually occur in a typical Hatha Yoga class.

Yoga Solutions for Anger Management - Pranayama Practice for Energy Channeling

Pranayama is a Yogic method for harnessing or restraining energy through breathing. Many Yoga teachers explain the concept of Pranayama, in detail, to the public, because breathing is often taken for granted. To put it quite simply, most people do not breathe properly, but many of them claim to know how to breathe and they see Pranayama practice as a waste of time.

After all, everyone has been breathing throughout life, right? If a Yoga practitioner with decades of experience has to remind him or herself to control breath on a daily basis; how is the rest of humanity breathing?

Most people breathe in a short, choppy, and uncontrolled manner, without filling the lungs to capacity. This cycle repeats itself daily, which contributes to the development of many ailments, health conditions, diseases, and emotional problems.

In relation to anger management, a short, choppy, and uncontrolled breath will encourage temper tantrums. It will enhance an environment of irritability. This is like walking around with a loaded, "hair-trigger" revolver, without a safety mechanism, and expecting it not to go off some day.

In fact, improper breathing is a recipe for emotional disaster. Pranayama has many purposes. Pranayama is able to control anger and emotional turmoil. We instinctively take a deep breath or sigh during stressful times, but how often do we really listen to our instincts? If people listened to instinct and intuition more often, the lines at the doctor's office would be shorter.

One way to test this is to practice Pranayama the next time you feel anger. Before you say a word to retaliate, practice Pranayama. Which method you choose depends upon how many people are around you.

If you are being "taken to task," in a business meeting, you may want to practice a slow and deep breath, which does not indicate your level of stress. One example of a slow and deep breath is Dhirga Pranayama (three part breath).

If you are alone Brahmari, Udgeeth, Ujjayi, Kapalabhati, Bastrika, or Sitali Pranayama are options, which make a bit more noise, but each has its place, when considering a method for mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual health. Each of us is emotionally different, but one or two of the above mentioned Pranayama techniques will relieve anger, frustration, and irritability.

The best choice can be determined by practicing Pranayama on a daily basis and finding out, which method is the most effective for you. So, why do people spend millions of dollars on prescriptions to make them feel less angry? Air is free, and when anything is free, people see it as worth nothing.

What a shame, because common sense, intelligence, love and friendship are free too. These are priceless treasures and so is air. Without air, the earth as we know it would not exist.

History of Pilates Equipment

There's no arguing what Pilates can do for those who practice it. Indeed, Joseph Pilates' exercise techniques have come a long way from World War I when he first applied them on injured soldiers in an internment camp. But aside from the regular Pilates yoga mats we use today, do you know there is a variety of equipment out there we can explore? In fact, these machines are partially responsible for the exercise' popularity because they play a major part in producing good results.

The very first model introduced was the Pilates Reformer which was patterned after the WWI soldiers' hospital beds set up with rings by Mr. Pilates himself. He believed the resistance helped their bodies recover from physical trauma. Because he found his invention very effective, he further developed it by creating more spring-based machines and incorporating bars and straps that allowed for more flexibility. In 1920, he arrived in New York and brought his moves to dancers whom he helped become more flexible and generally healthier to further master their bodies. That proved to be a good decision as far as spreading word about the exercise was concerned because now, even the dancers didn't only practice it. They also became active in letting other people know about the benefits of Pilates.

After the Pilates Reformer, the Pilates Cadillac became the next in thing and consisted of a padded platform with a frame on top of it. Mr. Pilates believed in the power of springs and this led him to develop the design with springs connecting bars or straps to the frame above the platform. Yet another equipment developed was the Pilates Barrel which was made of a wood frame with cushioned foam designed primarily to improve posture and flexibility.

Most people confuse Pilates with yoga and truth is, the two are very closely related. The former, however, is more focused on physical wellness while yoga touches deeper down into the spiritual level. Most people would like to get the best of both by integrating one into the other. Of course, only professionals can do this and those who want to benefit fully will have to trust only a trained instructor.

Today, when you talk of Pilates equipment, you usually think of pilatesyogamatdeals.com Pilates and yoga mats which are, of course, more suited to contemporary lifestyle. A person's success with this type of exercise routine is not completely dependent on the equipment used but whether it's a barrel or an pilatesyogamatdeals.com/extra-thick-yoga-pilates-mat.php extra thick Pilates yoga mat, results will certainly be affected.

Simple Core Training With an Exercise Ball for Weight Loss

Exercise is an essential part of any successful weight loss program. The great news is, it doesn't have to be hard or grueling. And there are some great tools and resources you can use to build muscle, strengthen the core, and increase the heart rate to burn calories, including the handy exercise ball!

An Exercise Ball, also known as a fitness ball, is typically 55cm to 65cm in circumference and is used for a variety of different types of exercises, including Pilates and yoga. An exercise ball is effective because you're typically using your core to balance yourself, regardless of the type of exercise you're attempting to do. And by using your core, you're strengthening it.

In this article, I'm going to share one powerful exercise that is sure to provide results quickly, and you can do it daily while watching TV. What's the mysterious exercise? It's the Knee Balance.

The Knee Balance:

Grab your fitness ball.
Position yourself in front of the ball.
Slowly put one knee on the ball.
Using your hands to help balance you on the ball, slowly place your second knee on the ball.
Contract your stomach and buttocks.
Slowly bring your body upright so you're kneeling on the ball. You're knees should be making a 90 degree angle with the ball.
Contract and squeeze all of your core muscles in, including your stomach, your thighs and your buttocks.
Do your best to balance on the ball for as long as possible.
If you fall off of the ball, get back up and repeat.
Repeat 3-5 times and hold for as long as possible each time.

* When you first begin, you may want to try this exercise close to something you can stabilize yourself with until you get used to the exercise, being mindful to steer clear of sharp or dangerous edges. The more you do it, the better you'll get at balancing for long periods of time.

Though it might not seem like it, in addition to strengthening and toning your core, this exercise helps get your heart pumping so you move into aerobic exercise mode to help you burn more calories for weight loss.

In addition to the Knee Balance, another great exercise to use the Exercise Ball for is sit-ups. Because you need to balance yourself with your feet, it automatically engages your core muscles, so it gives you an added boost compared to normal floor sit-ups.

Exercise Ball Sit-ups:

Center yourself on the exercise ball with your feet firmly planted on the floor.
Lean back at a 45 degree angle with your hands behind your head for support.
Begin lifting and lowering your torso in quick pumps.
Repeat 30-50 times for 3-5 sets.

Using the Exercise Ball as part of your exercise routine for weight loss provides several benefits as described above. In addition, you can pick up an exercise ball with a hand pump for less than $10 at your local Wal-Mart or department store!

Yoga Therapy For Chronic Back Pain - Six Tips You Should Know Before Your First Session

Once you have received the "go ahead" from your physician, you can begin to explore options for private Yoga therapy sessions or a class that suits your needs. After you have found the right Yoga teacher or therapist, there are important aspects to be considered.

1. Are any of your prescriptions producing side effects that may interact with your Yoga practice? For example: Some prescription drugs affect your balance. This may require the use of a chair, pole, wall, or solid fixture, to use as a support, when performing balancing postures.

2. This leads to the use of props and modifications during practice. Your teacher should be completely comfortable with instructing you about the use of props and how to modify any Yoga posture, to suit your needs. It helps if your teacher has extensive training, in the use of props, to modify them for special needs.

3. In some cases, particular Yoga postures may be deleted from your lesson plan (asana prescription). Some postures may create a spinal imbalance, which will bring about more pain; while other postures are too risky for your particular needs.

4. You and your teacher should communicate clearly, when you receive a physical adjustment or an assist. If you are experiencing pain before, after, or during your session, do not keep it a secret. Honest feedback should be a "two way street."

5. The level of physical challenge should be appropriate for you. In many ways, each of us is different physically. This should be taken into account from the very start of your Yoga therapy sessions. Even in a room full of people with lower back pain, each person has a different spine, skeletal structure, musculature, and pain threshold.

You should not feel like a tiger jumping through a flaming hoop. Yoga therapy is not a "one size fits all" process. Your asana prescription should meet your needs, exactly. Physical rehabilitation, of any kind, is a process designed around the individual, and not the other way around.

6. You will be given some Yoga therapy "homework." You should be able to practice part, or all, of your session at home. If your sessions meet once per week, your therapist or teacher will advise you to develop a home practice.

When you receive instructions for home practice, please follow them. This one step could be the difference between the pain you normally experience and having no pain at all.
