One Potentially-Addictive Way to Improve Your Brain

It was once thought that the brain is fixed and un-malleable. But modern researches have time and again shown the brain's capability to prevent mental decline... or even reverse some of the most dreaded diseases, so as long as it is in the right environment.

There are, of course, many variables in the environment that you have to pay attention of. Nutrition, exercise, brain exercises and stress management are just some of the things you have to consider. But in this article, I want to focus on just one of these many variables: Stress.

Stress is probably the biggest killer of brains. The more you're stressed, the more your brain releases chemicals that are harmful. For example, studies in animals seem to suggest that stress kills brain cells - which of course, leads to overall mental decline.

There are many ways you reduce stress. There's meditation, yoga and deep breathing - all these are long recommended by practitioners as a way to get more energy and focus. In this article, however, I want to talk to you about one of the most pleasant ways to manage stress. If those "new-age" stuff isn't your cup of tea, then listen up:

Simply listening to music makes a BIG difference to your brain. The bad news is: Not any music will do. For some reason that scientists aren't quite sure of, exposing the brain to loud music, such as Rock and Roll seem to suppress brain functions. Classical music, however, has an opposite effect.

A Stanford University study found that classical music not only improve attention span in subjects, it also helps the brain to better anticipate events. These two skills, of course, are important to the survival of the human race in our evolution. Another study by MATB showed children exposed to classical symphonies did better in standard tests and the WIRED media reported how music makes the brain happy.

So if you are not one to listen to classical music... why not try it out?
