Wii Games Vs Dancetown - Which Exergame is More Beneficial in Caloric Burn?

The exergaming trend continues to increase as people become more intent on being fit but are less inclined to going to the gym. There can be several reasons why home based fitness is returning to the mainstream with cost being the most pre-dominant factor.

The popularity of the Wii Fit is allowing normal family members to experience a level of entertainment while getting a workout for a nominal cost and in the comfort of their own home. This is especially true when the weather is cold and the idea of jumping into a car to go to the local gym is less than appealing.

2 studies conducted at the University of Wisconsin La Crosse exercise and Health Program focused on the two different exergame programs to determine if indeed there were real aerobic benefits to these applications.

The results were as follows:

1. The Wii fit did burn 2 X the calories of a standard video game that required no physical activity other than moving a standard controller.

2. The Wii Sports pack helped the operator to meet minimum activity guidelines with basic movements encountered during the games

3. The Dancetown program provided a significant increase in caloric burn rate as the levels of intensity increased.

4. Older subjects in the Dancetown study were asked to participate in three consecutive dance songs with varying degrees of difficulty. The 30 minute session burned an average of 136 calories.

In summary, the study seemed to indicate the Dancetown application provided more opportunities to increase the activity and caloric burn rate than the standard WII applications. Based on this study, Wii may be more suited to Yoga or other low impact based activities where applications such as Dancetown may provide more aerobic benefit.
