Newport Beach Offers Free Fun Fitness

California's Newport Beach offers a lot of exercise options for those of you who are fitness-minded and love to train outdoors. No longer do you have to exercise in a gym with mirrored walls to "feel" like you're working out in a bigger place, and you never have to worry about being overcrowded or having to wait your turn for treadmills and exercise bikes. You can do yoga, cardio, circuit train, and even work in some weightlifting if you're creative and have a partner.

Beach yoga is becoming very popular in Newport Beach with entire classes being taught by certified instructors. Doing yoga in the sand helps improve your balance and coordination. Plus, you may feel considerably more connected with nature and the environment by doing yoga outdoors rather than doing the same work in a studio. On the beach, you can hear ocean waves crashing and seagulls squawking, and you can feel the sea breeze as you stretch and pose.

Beach cardio options include walking, jogging, jumping rope, running, and sprinting. You can do some of the slower cardio like walking, jogging, and jumping rope on the boardwalk, and you can do faster cardio like running and sprinting along the water's edge where there are less people and more room. The great thing about these options is that the only equipment you need is a pair of running shoes. If you're looking for an added challenge, you can also use light ankle weights.

Circuit training on the beach combines high-intensity cardio like running and sprinting with strength-training exercises like push-ups and sit-ups. This type of exercise program is great for weight loss and adding muscle: simply by controlling how many calories you consume daily, you can do the same exercises to lose body fat and excess weight or gain muscle size and strength. If you decide to circuit train, you should set a fitness goal before starting your program and adjust your diet accordingly.

Weightlifting on the beach may seem like a challenge because you can't just drag big, bulky exercise machines with you wherever you go. Some beaches, like Muscle Beach in Venice, California, offer weight-training and bodybuilding facilities. Unfortunately, Newport Beach is not yet so well-equipped. But if you are creative and have an exercise partner that shares your fitness goals, you can do hardcore push-ups, sit-ups, and even pull-ups by providing each other with added weight resistance.

Don't assume Newport Beach is just for 4th of July fireworks and volleyball. If you let yourself think outside of the box when it comes to exercise and fitness, you can quickly turn the beach into your favorite new gym.
