Ever have a Dagwood sandwich? Three slices of bread with all kinds of goodies in between. The possible contents are endless. Think now about the constant dialog about the mind , body spirit connection. These three are never really anywhere but here and now. The three slices of bread represent the mind , body and spirit. The contents in between represent the breath and the more focused we are on the breath (when I say focused , I mean listening to and feeling the breath) the more fulfilling the sandwich becomes. When I give meditation instructions, sometimes I will say " Listen to everything, how many things can you hear at one time? Don't block anything out.
Count the number of things you can hear this very moment. Listen fully to everything, loud and soft, near and far. Allowing your listing apparatus to absorb all sounds that are in the present. Now smell everything, Body and air, room and clothing, smell it all. Now feel everything. Comfort and discomfort. Can we hear, smell and feel all at the same time? Now taste everything. What are our taste buds picking up on. Is it what we just ate, or something that we drank four hours ago? Now, with our eyes open, see everything. Don't train the eyes on any one thing, just allow the sense of sight to absorb everything available in front of us. In a few moments we can close the eyes and allow the third eye to look inward and capture the beauty that exists within us. An image will appear that may need some focus, here we pay attention to detail, here we add the total breath focus to add the corrective lens to the third eye. When we allow ourselves to become totally absorbed in everything that is going on around us and in us with the breath as the musical background, our senses become a symphony, the inward looking third eye becomes the conductor and in image we perceive is truly natural and full filling. Our search ends and our journey begins.
I have heard that the sound OM represents all of the sounds of the universe if we we to hear everything all at the same time. So , to hear OM we start with the sounds directly around us and allow the third ear to listen to and hear that which is imperceptible to the naked ear.
What is it called when we can see ever thing all at the same time? When we allow ourselves to absorb all the images that we are surrounded by and then close our eyes for an image to reveal itself to complete the picture? This tri-binding experience of mind, body and spirit becomes our Dagwood sandwich. Be it.
