If you have been thinking that "breaking the dog's spirit" is the proper way to train your dog, you need to have some serious reconsideration. To be able to train your dog properly you will need to show the dog love to get his or her attention and respect. Every dog understands the power of positive reinforcement.
I use to compare the training of a dog with learning to ride a bike. Think back to when you first learned to ride a bike. You fell down a couple of times and it did hurt but it went over and eventually after much trial-and-error you learned how to ride a bike. It took some time too and teaching a dog how to behave properly will be quite time consuming as well.
The most important tool if you would like to train your dog yourself is time and patience. Another good investment might be a leach. When the dog does as he or she is supposed to do then you will reward the behavior with a little treat.
When the dog does not behave as he or she is supposed to, you will need to say something like "bad dog". Do not encourage the dog's bad behavior or you will have a harder task to teach the dog the proper behavior. It is just like raising a child, they have to learn that their actions will lead to some consequences. If they behave properly they will get rewarded, if not they will get corrected.
If your dog is afraid of something do not force the dog into it, try to find some way to enforce the dog's trust in you and encourage it by doing something playful to help the dog get over its psychological fears. A good way can be to feel relaxed and just try to enjoy the time that you and your dog spends together. Take a long walk or do some jogging together this will help to strengthen the band between you and your dog. This is especially the way to bond for big dogs.
Another good way to strengthen the bond with your dog might be to play with him or her in your own garden or in your apartment. Especially for small dogs this is a funny way to learn them how to behave properly.
The last and final way to train your dog, no matter what size he or she might have, is to go for a walk with other dog owners. It might be good for you as well as your dog, since you're both getting socialized with others.
