Benefits of Baby Massage

The first few months of a baby's life are some of the most crucial moments within learning and development. These early experiences gently ease your baby into this big wide world. This is the beginning of the very special bond between mother and child.

Baby massage is quite new to Britain but in countries such as India it is an important part of a baby's daily routine. In fact Indian baby massage is more than that; it is their way of life. It has long been a tradition in India for thousands of years. After the birth a cleansing massage is done on the baby and every day after. And it's not just the mothers who do the massaging; elder children massage their younger siblings.

So what are the benefits? Well for a start it develops the baby's first language which is of cause touch. But one of its main benefits to the health as it helps to strengthen and regulate their digestive system including respiratory and circulatory systems. There have been studies with premature babies that proved massaging strengthens and regulates the respiratory, circulatory and gastrointestinal systems. This means every time you massage your baby you are stimulating their immune system which increases your baby's resistance to disease.

Also massage enhances the babies feeling of being loved and secure and relieves the symptoms of colic, wind and constipation. Increased intimacy with your baby gives you the ability to recognise any changes and potentially catch illnesses early on.

It's not just the babies who benefit from these experiences it's the parents to. New mums develop confidence when handling their baby, it is very therapeutic meaning it's a great form of stress release. Also it increases awareness of your babies' growth and development, and enhances the loving communication between mother and baby which helps parents to understand and make the correct response to their baby's non verbal language.

If you're struggling with post-natal depression then baby massage could be of serious benefit to you as recent research has shown it helps. The research has also shown that babies who are held, massaged, carried and rocked grow into adults that are less aggressive and violent with a lot more compassion and corporation.

Dads often feel left out when a new baby comes along. They may see the strong bond between mother and baby and feel left out. Well baby massage is a fantastic role for dads also; it brings them closer together and offers a great healthy experience and quality time between father and baby.

All in all baby massage is beneficial for the whole family. You can find a class locally that teaches all the basics and then go off and practice at home. Or you might like the class as it gets you out of the house and allows you to mingle with other mums. You may find you like it so much you want to run your own class one day. This is possible as there are diplomas in baby massage which will teach you all you need to run your own baby massage class.
