Joseph H. Pilates was born in Mönchengladbach in Germany in 1880. Joseph grew up as a very sickly child who suffered from asthma and rheumatic fever. In 1912 Joseph Pilates moved to England, earning among other things his living as a boxer, circus-performer and self-defense trainer. He was detained on the Isle of Man in a concentration camp during World War I as the British authorities interned him because of his German heritage. Here he started to train other inmates in the art of physical fitness and exercises and the Pilates Method of training began to take shape. He ultimately devised a series of exercises and training-techniques and engineered all the equipment, specifications and tuning required to teach his methods properly.

In 1925 Joseph Pilates emigrated to the United States of America. On the ship to America he met his future wife Clara. The couple starts a studio in New York City and directly taught their students well into the 1960s. Joe and Clara originally called their way of training "Contrology", related to encouraging the use of the mind to control the muscles. They focused their attention on core postural muscles that help keep the human body balanced and provide support for the spine. Pilates exercises actually teach you awareness of how to optimize your breathing and alignment of the spine, it strengthen the deep torso and abdominal muscles.
