Nurses and Back Pain Part 2

While some people with this condition are unlucky enough to develop debilitating back pain, for most of us the back pain from degenerative disc disease is just a signal that we need to adopt a healthier lifestyle to keep the symptoms in check.

Good overall health -- and the health of the muscles, ligaments and tendons that support your spine -- will go a long way to minimizing painful flare-ups. And by all means don't forget to take good care of your emotional, spiritual and psychological health too by finding a good support group.

Nurses

Nurses and health care workers are highly motivated and knowledgeable about health and safety issues. One of the root causes behind nurses with back pain / sciatica is the amount of required lifting, often without adequate assistance. This type of lifting has led to very high percentages of nurses with back pain.

Back pain relief for nurses seems difficult to come by as mechanical lifting devices are available less than 20% of the time. Making matters worse, nurses frequently have to move furniture out of the way just to do their jobs in the cramped environment of a typical hospital room. According to one recent study on nursing and back pain, at some point during their careers, debilitating lower back pain will affect 58% of ICU nurses and 65% of orthopaedic nurses.

The study of emergency department nurses found most nurses are not satisfied with the response of administration to violent incidents in hospitals and highlighted that violence is an important professional issue for nurses but that it is concealed as part of the job. Illness and injury can cause unpredictable behaviour, and physical assaults of nurses and health care workers are not infrequent.

Safety

Giving authority to employees for health and safety management creates a joint responsibility between employers and employees. This is done by involving employees in the establishment of health and safety committees, the development and publication of policies, the training of employees and managers on health and safety concerns, and pursuing initiatives that keep health and safety issues on the workforce agenda.

Good health and safety outcomes will not be maintained without health and safety programmes being resourced adequately and ongoing management support and involvement. Engaging yoga teachers to go into hospitals and care homes will benefit not only the staff but patients as well. Those who are really switched on are doing this already and keeping costs down as a result as staff not being off work.
